... from its citizens. Apparently in a recent poll 70% of respondents answered that they were either not proud or ambivalent about being Belgium. They are very open about the artificial nature of their country, the french south, the Flemish north and the german east, all crammed into a tiny patch of land that was defined largely by the British who wanted a friendly foothold on the continent for trade in the early 1800s, out of the aftermath of the napoleonic wars, even ...

Where do I begin with Brussels....we flew into Belgium on Thursday April 3rd. After an extremely delayed flight we finally landed in Belgium and took a bus to our hostel. - followed people who were dressed up to our shuttle

... and ginger nougat on the way, we headed back to our hotel. Brussels is pretty grubby, many parts give off a smell that reminds one all too vividly that locals regularly use the streets a a toilet - even in the absence of an official 'pissoir'. Pretty disgusting actually but this can be overlooked pretty easily as we wander the cobbled lanes. Back at the hotel we crashed at about 6:30pm. Ten or so hours sleep has refreshed and rejuvenated - onward we ...
