Kandy : Shops, Temples, Temples, Temples

Day 5 : Sunday 28th December 2008 Dambulla, Sri Lanka - Kandy A lovely Roti breakfast and we hit the road. It's shop day! First up was a furniture store - nothing much of interest - some nice elephant & turtle tables but nothing grabs us - we leave with a fridge magnet for Chris. The next stop was much better - a spice garden. We get a tour and get shown all sorts of spice (ginger, peppers, cinnamon, turmeric, etc, etc) and the occasional fruit. We persuade them to strip and open a cocon...

A Blond Moment in Sri Lanka

I am sitting in the Business Class Lounge in the Sri Lankan Airport enjoying the fastest free internet connection I have seen since SE Asia! It's the 15th (soon to be midnight and then the 16th)...two days later than my originally booked flight...hence the blond moment. My head splitting sinus infection that I picked up in India clouded my reading of my itinerary. I know, it's not that difficult but actually those pesky flights that occur a little past midnight can be trouble. I woke up in Si...

Lush & beautiful - a real gem!

... floor had very ornate doors, with drummers and clarinet-like instruments playing thro’out. I also visited the Alut Maligawa Buddhist shrine with its Thai Buddhist design, also with about 30 paintings detailing the turbulent history of the tooth’s journeys thro’ the ages! There were a lot of Buddha statues all around the periphery of the temple. I visited 2 more small temples opposite the tooth shrine: the Pirith Mandapaya (expositions of the STR on ...

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

... doesn't stand a chance out in the jungle on their own. They need direction, female direction. Full power to the matriarchs. As you can imagine, Sri Lanka is not at home to health and safety so Tom spent most of his time in amongst the enormous beasts - not all of which were tame - whilst I nursed my nerves from a safer distance. Occasionally he was reprimanded by one of the more belligerent staff members but that didn't stop him from ...

Pubs and Scams, Rain and more Rain

Being so close to Kandy we naturally continued to the old capital but with some trepidation since it lies at 1600 feet above sea level and that means a drop in temperature but emboldened by good warm mornings we braved the high road and the Kandy bus. The conductor seemed keen for me to remove my bag but wasn't able to suggest how I should achieve this without letting go of the handholds I was clinging to for dear life as the bus hurtled around bends at breakneck speed. I learned ...

Going in-land with a van

... get a sense of what life is really like in this beautiful country.. for instance Christmas at Ali's, then visiting the Galle family I had met two years ago after the tsunami, and finally spending time at Lara's guesthouse. Back to my excursion up the country. We passed through the town in SriLanka that produces the most marijuana. I forget the name! (Don't draw any conclusions about short term memory loss due to drug use! I meant to write ...

Ancient cities, elephants & sneaking into temples

... an adventures little fellow and was differently the center of attention when he started 'hopping' around. The last thing that happened during our stay was that while walking towards the river with all the elephants down the main street (about 50ish) we passed a small kid who had a whicker basket what kept on saying 'picture Sir'. After saying no thanks he popped the lid of the basket and up jumped this huge frigging cobra which the kid ...

Off to Visit the Veddas of Sri Lanka in 24 Hours

... and turtles. The Veddas I visit still commemorate their great, grand, grand father Kalubandara, a Yaksha Gothra, from whom they are descended. But they hold the spirits of all their ancestors in honour, referring to them collectively as the Nae Yaku. Other spirits, which are inherent in stones, trees, plants and animals, are called upon in cases of illness, marriage or when preparing to hunt. To gain the spirits good will complex sacrifice dances and rituals are specified. I ...

Happy New Year

... I thought it all linked in rather nicely and I am more than happy to try for more good fortune when ever and where ever it's available! Even though it's a bank holiday the elephants still need there normal routine so at 7.30 (I got an hours lay in for the bank holiday) I was up to my knees in elephant poo whilst cleaning out Rani's bed, She does to be honest **** a lot anyway but like most of the other elephants she has been unsettled by ...
