Heaven, I'm in heaven......

Wow, I love Hoi An. This is the silk capital of Vietnam, and there are shops everywhere that will make anything for you. So we decided we need some R&R and spent the day relaxing and shopping! Gave the sightseeing a rest. So it was a pretty uneventful day overall, I got 4 dresses and 2 pairs of sandals made, had a facial and a manicure, bought a few presents and some jewellery. The sun actually came out for a while too but it is cold again now. I am getting suspicious that the bad weather is ...

Hoi An

Arriving in Hoi An, I got a moto to the hotel area. I stayed at Thien Thanh Hotel because it looked quite nice and had a pool, which I wanted to lounge around as I was on my own. My stay here was ok, until Dave tried to check in and they raised the rates. After we decided to check out rather than pay more money, they tried to charge for an extra day at the end. A heated argument later, we were checked into another hotel down the street for half of what they were trying to charge us. I would w...

Friendly and Laid Back Central Vietnam

Upon entry to Central Vietnam we could feel the vibe change - the locals actually like us here! I guess this because both Hue and Hoi An were on the same side as the Americans in the "American War". We spent our one day in Hue mostly cruising the Perfume River on a dragon boat with a local family with very cute little girls. The dad motored the boat, the mom cooked us lunch, and the kids charmed us (into opening our pocketbooks). Along the way on the river we stopped at a beautiful ancient pa...

Postscript

Well, now that you have heard the real story we expect that you will doubt the veracity of anything that Steve and I report. However, nothing surprised us about Bryce's version of events--the only disappointment is that while he can write a full narrative, only 3 sentences can be managed in his journal (and it is mostly about the food he did or didn't like--same for Reid--sorry Miss R and Mrs. F). Anyway, just a few notes about Hoi An where we have spent the last 3 days. It is a pretty city (...

Hoi An - Floods And Tailors

Day 25 - Wednesday 24/11/04 Nha Trang - Hoi An Up at 5.15, downstairs at 6 on time for the bus as required - and the bus picked us up at 7.15 - ****ers. The daylight section of the drive was lovely - there was some lovely scenic views - it's amazing how much of the country is flooded for rice. The coast was amazing too - with fields for fish! There were some lovely beach stops too but the weather wasn't nice enough to entice us into the water. The latter part of the journey was in the dark an...

In Stitches in Hoi An

We left Hue yesterday on the 8am bus. En route to the city of Hoi An, we stopped by the China Sea coastline, and the famous Marble Mountains. These craggy, sharp mountains are the source of most of the marble of older Vietnam (but not recent Vietnam; they've overused the marble so much that now they import marble from JAPAN), and overlook China Beach, made famous by the 1980s TV series (which I never watched. Anyway). We arrived in Hoi An at 12pm. Here is what could happen when you change you...

That Sucking Sound You Hear....

This little town sucks you in. No joke. What has begun as "I will have a dress made" has morphed into a dress shirt with custom embroidery and a silk blouse for me, and a linen shirt for Matt. And he picked up a swimsuit. And now I can hear the handmade purses and boots calling my name. I am not a shopper, but you see yourself in the mirror with these beautiful handmade garments, costing about $10, and you think, well, what's another $10? And then you tell yourself it's really a selfless gest...

Indiana Jones and the Full Moon Fever

For a little town filled with such lazy, amazing days, yesterday was by far the most awe-inspiring. We were picked up at 8am at our little hotel by a tourist bus service, and we headed 35km inland to the west to the most archaeologically important site in all Vietnam- My Son (pronounced "mee sun"). It is to Vietnam what Angkor Wat is to Cambodia, and what Macchu Picchu is to Peru (if you don't know what those places are, edumacate yourself on Wikipedia and start dreaming about visiting them!!...

i am now 26!

on the second of november, yesterday, i turned 26, in hoi an, vietnam! and what an obscure day! rather than spending a cold, and probably rainy, day working before going out with friends from southampton, i spent the morning at the tailors, the afternoon strolling around the old town and swimming in the south china sea, and the night eating vietnamese food and drinking cheap bia hoi and cocktails! anyway, before i could turn 26, i had to spend my last few days as a 25 year old in the north of...

subject - leaving hanoi for haiphong

wednesday 22 october contd. ok so, after arguing with the taxi man to stop the car because we suspected he was taking us the wrong way so as to clock up the money on the meter, we paid the man, to which we, again, were given the wrong change, after he asked that the final 5,000 dong change go to him - not that he was worth it, but i couldn't be bothered to argue the matter or over the 20p that dong represented - and we headed off round the corner to discover that actually he had taken us to t...

Nice little cosy hotel

from JeffreyOng
Stay there for 2 nights during my recent trip to central Vietnam. The hotel is nice and cosy with a nice view at the back where you can have your breakfast and there is also a nice little pool for those who need a cold dip to escape the heat. Price was excellent and the room was neat and clean. Reception was also very helpful and proficient. It is located away from the hustle of the old ancient town and is quiet in the evening.

To tell, or not to tell? ...

Do I risk everyone "discovering" the Thien Thanh? ... or do I be selfish and keep this gem to myself?

The truth is that the lovely Ms Bình Ho (Ho Thi Thanh Bình) and all her wonderful staff make the Thien Thanh hotel one of those truly rare finds that are both heart-breaking to leave and impossible not to come back to.

The hotel is rather new, quite clean and well maintained, sensitively planned and very nice decorated throughout, resulting in a cool and airy feel and a very pleasant and enjoyable ambience. Being set a little out of the centre and not on a main road makes for a blissfully quiet location whilst still being only a short stroll to absolutely everywhere in Hoi An town.

With views over rice-paddys, gardens and distant ranges my high, rear-facing room was as much a delight to wake up to in the morning as it was to watch from its balcony, evening sunset over the mountains.

But it is its people that make the Thien Thanh what it is and give it the warm, welcoming friendliness that always greeted me. From Ðào and Dung on reception to all of its staff, the kindness and helpfulness they show its guests make this hotel, for me, a wonderfully unforgetable experience.

So, stay somewhere else, don't stay here! ... (I will keep this gem for myself! J ) ... but don't be surprised if you bump into me staying at the Thien Thanh the next time I'm in Vietnam ... there's nowhere else I'd want to stay.

Great hotel.

Hi everyone,

We stayed here for four nights and loved the clean rooms and friendly staff.

If you phone ahead they will meet you off the bus.

Each room had lovely little touches including flowers to make it special.

Had a great pool and little garden area at the back to relax in after days at the tailors.

Outstanding Hotel

from RockyochZorro
It is unbelieveable a hotel can be soooooo cheap for the level you recieve at Thien Thanh Hotel. Everything was first rate, the service, the room, the food, and the swimming pool. The staff even went the extra mile to help us celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary by giving us a complimentary bottle of wine and congratulations from the entire staff.

A total bargain

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have been travelling now for 11 months and this hotel was probably the best value I've seen. We arrived without reservation but still got a great welcome. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and will book any onward travel arrangements. The rooms are new and stylish with little touches like flowers on the bed each day. They just finished the pool the day after we arrived and have a sun deck where they also serve breakfast. All around for what you get it's a total bargain.

Best Hotel Stayed - Wonderful Character of its own!

from cavalulu
We stayed for 4 nights from 4 Jun to 8 Jun at Hoi An. No one would ever regret staying at this fabulous hotel in Hoi An. It's given a 3 star rating on the web site I booked but in my opinion from the extensive travel made across 3 continents of 12 countries staying from the luxury Banyan Tree in Maldives to the 1 star hotel in Taiping, Malaysia, it has what it takes for a 5 stars hotel and surpasses every aspects of it.

For just US$22-25 per day, the rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable. The balcony from my room opens to a large field and each morning I see the farmers at work. I must salute the owner for their eye in details from fresh flowers laid every day on the bed to the free internet access to emails. These are just some of the value add provided for. On the 3rd day of our stay, the new swimming pool was finally ready and we had the honor to be the first few to dip in the inviting pool and sun bath on the deck. The staff are forever so friendly and they really made us feel at home. What more can you ask for??? It's a gem for sure.

Finally, I must say that Thien Thanh has its place of a boutique hotel and a wonderful character of its own that is very difficult to resist. I will definitely come back again.

At the time of writing this review, they are building an extension wing and I am very sure that it will be another excellent new wing I am awaiting for when I next visit Hoi An possibly in Dec 2006.

One of the best in Vietnam

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had been recommended this hotel and it succeeded our expectations. The first impression was that it looked pleasant with the wooden furnishment and the plants and flowers that they have decorated the hotel with.

The rooms were clean and spacious decorated without any carpets on the floor.

The breakfast was served on their cosy terrace which have a nice view over a green area (its the same view from the balcony aswell). We haven't tried any of their meals but the breakfast was good.

During the hot days we were wishing that the hotel have had a pool. But we were told that the pool, which was under construction during our visit, would be finished within a few days (darn...). Instead we rented bicycles for a cheap price and went to the closest beach only 15 minutes ride away.

+ Good service and nice staff

+ Free internet with acceptabel speed

+ Quiet with no disturbing traffic noise

- Somewhat off the city centre. About 15 minutes walk.

Very nice small hotel stay.

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a very nice small hotel with a perfect location. Easy access to two beaches by bicycle or motorbike. Easy walking to shopping and restaurants. Good prices and excellent friendly service. Breakfast included with a better selection than most VN hotels I have experienced. Highly recommended.

Small Gem

from chris101
We found this hotel on The Rough Guide (which states that it has a small swimming pool which we were looking forward to - Unfortunately at the time of our stay they were redeveloping to build a bigger pool in a new extension).

However our initial disappointment was subsequently overshadowed by the fabulous staff, beautiful rooms and genial atmosphere at this friendly spot. The room we stayed in was on the top floor, with a beautiful balcony overlooking green fields and trees, away from the bustle of the town's streets (and only a short walk from the town centre).

The rooms are extremely tastefully decorated and the en-suite bathrooms are large (with a bath). Hard to beat fresh flowers on the bed every day!

The breakfasts are good with a broad range of choices.

Overall, we were very pleased and would stay here again.

A gem of a place in Hoi An

from jonty2
We stumbled onto the Thien Thanh hotel after a neighbouring hotel mixed up our reservation and left us high and dry. We ended up spending 8 wonderful nights here and felt we should share our thoughts about this lovely place.

Thien Thanh is an immaculate mini-hotel a 5 minute walk from the city centre. The rooms are generous as are the rates ($10-25). Breakfast is complementary and is eaten on the rear deck overlooking picturesque waterlogged fields replete with birdlife. Most rooms also have balconies facing the same way.

The staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful and could not do enough to help us, whether helping us with tours, taxis or tailors.

Reasonably fast ADSL internet is available in the foyer at negligible cost.

The managers tell us that a pool will also be installed in the next 2 months, though the beach is only a 20min ride away in the meantime.

They have an excellent website at [-] and will respond quickly to reservation requests at [-].

When we return to Hoi An (the next time we need more clothes!), we will be back to Thien Thanh in a flash!
