    Sappraiwan Elephant Sanctuary

... we were there. There's a bright blue pool, which we took advantage of at times, including at night(!), and the restaurant serves nice (but thanks to the company we booked through, also very monotonous) food. It's been a bit strange going from eating truly family style (even off each other's plates) in the Akha village, to a very formal way of eating at Sappraiwan, each with your personal dishes eating quietly over a white tablecloth. But it's nice to have a change and to know what ...

Left Nan and headed southeast on 101 ... GPS still not agreeing with map and neither agrees with either road atlas. Note that the new road atlas that Guy bought in Bangkok is dated 2014 ... perhaps it is optomistic about some of the roads it is showing .... The GPS keeps trying to force us back onto a major highway ... "go 30 meters, turn right, turn right again, turn right again, turn left" etc. Recalculates every time we miss an opportunity for a ...

... In all seriousness, it did take us a while to pick where to see elephants in South East Asia, as some locations don't have the best reputation for their treatment of the animals. Fortunately, the elephants at Lampang all seemed well treated and cared for. That's basically our way of saying 'don't judge us for watching an elephant playing the xylophone'. On to the second stop- Sukhothai- home to some pretty impressive old ruins. The Old City ...

... told we could get a bus straight to Phitsanulok. The short journey was pretty horrendous as we both got shoved into the stairwell. I felt pretty sick the whole way so was glad when we arrived in Saraburi. From here we were told there were no direct buses to Phitsanulok and we would have to go to Lopburi and then get the train to Phitsanulok from there. A simple journey was getting very complicated. After another ...

Day 254: a train ride and a hotel

... The Eastbound train was 5 minutes late and on platform 1. Mine another ten minutes later on 'platform' 3, ie the third track, which easily can be reached by walking accross the other two (no underpass-overpass-complications).
We pass villages, rice fields, round shaped mountains in a distance, Lopburi with a giant yellow monkey statue and thousands of life monkeys climbing around the temple ruins, ****-white ...
