Civil rights advovated for African Americans

A travel blog entry by 14trobaughl

Today we are traveling to Birmingham Alabama, the place where Warren G Harding gave a speech in a time of the civil rights movement. During these times your typical white male would be using put downs or making African Americans feel like they were less of a person than someone who was white. During Harding's speech he called for racial equality. This shocked the world. The fact that a white man stood ...

We sat up and visited until there was nearly as much yawning as conversation. Thanks, Gayle, for opening your home to me, and to Rita for helping me feel welcome!

Visit to Montevallo

A travel blog entry by nludwig

I make the quick drive from Birmingham to Montevallo, Alabama, to visit the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Montevallo. This school is unique as the only public liberal arts university in the state, and one of the handful in the nation.

... and walked to the Peabody hotel to watch the infamous duck parade through the hotel lobby. The tradition began in the 1950s when two friends that owned the Peabody Hotels in Memphis and Little Rock went hunting and thought it would be funny to put some of the ducks in the hotel lobby's fountain. Their funny idea attracted people from everywhere. They flocked to the hotels daily to watch the ducks prance down the red carpet twice a day. ...

    Dump in Bubbaland

This place is truly terrible. I would not advise any one staying here.

Not only were the rooms not clean, but the service was horrible too.

AAA Four Diamond Rating - Who Are They Kidding?

    from anonymous

When I read that this was the only AAA four diamond rated hotel in Birmingham I had high expectations. The lobby is beautiful and Shula's Steakhouse is located right at the front entrance. What could be bad?

Well, the rooms are mediocre at best - worn old beat up furniture, old fixtures in the bathroom and filthy grout around the bathroom tile.

There were ants in the bed (!) and scurrying around the bathroom by the sink. The only phone line in the room was between the 2 double beds - which meant that in order to use my laptop computer I had to set it on the bed in order to reach the phone line. This place is in bad need of renovation. And I have lost all faith in AAA hotel ratings - what are they thinking?

You would think it would be excellent

    from anonymous

I was really excited cause I heard it was attached to a mall. They did not have a refrigerater in the room. To get one was $10. If you like Thrift Store Princess Diana/Queen Elizabeth looking furniture or surrondings this is your place. It was ok. Just ok.

    Never again

    from anonymous

When I stayed in this hotel, I found blood on my pillowcases, thats right blood. The problem was fixed by we be reassigned another smaller room in which the toilet overflowed...Do yourself a favor and never stay here.

    Looks Are Deceiving!

    from anonymous

Let's just say looks are deceiving! I was impressed with the looks of the hotel at first and then I went to my room. The room looked clean but when you really looked it was not! First, I found live bugs in my bed and on the extra blanket in the closet. Along with that came blood stains and hair on the bedding. It was really gross. We moved to a different room that didn't have bugs but still had stains on the bedding. Our commode quit flushing in our new room after one day and we had to have someone come at 11:00 at night to repair it. Then there are the inconveniences. In order to get a drink out of a machine you have to go to the third floor. If you want a snack you have to go to the fourth floor. We put our leftover supper in the mini bar, not knowing that we weren't supposed to, and we come back to our room to find it sitting out spoiled with a note saying not to use the mini bar as as a refigerator. Needless to say, we were not impressed at all. We would not have stayed here if our conference that we were attending had not been here. I would not reccommend it until some major changes take place. It has the potential to be very nice but it is not right now! The ONLY thing I liked about it was the huge shopping mall attached to it.

Birmingham is great, the Wynfree if OK

    from Wattage

My wife and I stayed at the Wynfrey over the Valentines Day / Presidents Day (2/13 2/16) weekend 2003. We stayed three nights. Our room was comfortable, but the carpet was a little worn and had seen better days. The same can be said about the carpet in the hallways and elevators. The beds were fine and the bathroom very clean. Parking was plentiful with easy access to the $8 a day garage. We did not eat at the hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Birmingham.

Wynfrey Hotel is the best in Birmingham

    from anonymous

My stay at the Wynfrey was very enjoyable. I stayed last October while attending an Alabama football game. I loved the availabilty of the many restaraunts and the options of different price ranges. Five minutes from my arrival I was in my room. The convienience of the mall was also a plus. Checkout was a breeze. My overall stay was fantastic.

    The Wynfrey Excels

    from anonymous

As resident of Birmingham, my husband and I are very familiar with the hotel, but have stayed there only one time (why stay in a hotel when I live about 15 minutes from it?). We were very please with our experience. The hotel was immaculate and the room was beautiful. Each employee I encountered was extremely courteous, from the time we checked in until we left. Room service was great, I was able to find many things on the menu and did not have any problems with a special request. I will be back!

    Problems at the Wynfrey

    from anonymous

I recently stayed at the Wynfrey (June and October, 2002) and on both occasions found the experience not up to the ratings given by the Preferred Hotels of America, or the AAA (AAA four-Diamond Award). We found the fitness room equipment worn, the hallways not clean (room service dishes left out all night), uncomfortable beds, and genrally a hotel in need of refurbishment and new management. In October, in the night stand,(I was looking for the phone book) I found a pair of dirty shorts and tee shirt from the previous occupant. The bath/shower mixing valves are worn and in need of replacement (can't read "cold" or "hot"). In the club level room, my wife discovered her wine glass to have lipstick marks on the rim of the glass from the previous user. The padlock on the beer cooler behind the bar is not attractive as well, especially for this highly rated hotel. This hotel needs work. Not currently worth the amount they charge. Could be a great hotel with a lot of work with the staff as well as the building ---C.B. Tuscaloosa, AL
