... 2.5 mph, with rests. Occasionally the wind would drive a short sharp squall ashore but in the main we stayed reasonably dry. We came across a restored hut that had been the workplace of poet and playwright, Ronald Duncan. What views to inspire! Eventually the landscape started to flatten out and we could see Bude, our destination, in the distance . We took heart and in the end made pretty good time reaching the pub we are staying in at just after ...

I awake according to my custom before 5am:

    Seagulls circling early,

    Calling

    "Come join us".

It's a rest day and we take the time to farewell Ed onto the London train and focus on preparing ourselves for the next stage of this adventure.

... it keeps pulling the bag down. We trudge through deep mud around the flood plain and the muscles in my neck and shoulders are struggling with the pain and a persistent headache arises. It’s clear to me there will be no pleasure in today and I know Debby is struggling as well.

This is just wrong; it’s not how I wanted my last day with Ed to be. I wanted to enjoy it and I am instead cast down in a bleak mood and ...

By the time we have reached Tregony we have covered 24kms and scaled a final steep hill up to the bus stop, once again in good time to catch the bus to Truro. We take some time here telling stories of the day we’ve just consumed and again I am impressed by Ed who has crunched out these kilometres despite blisters, and much perspiration; it’s wonderful to see how strong he is and how well he’s coping.
