Union Square

I recently visited Union Square in Downtown San Francisco. I have put together this informative post on the area from a variety of sources that I used to tour the area. Enjoy! First Stop: Westin Saint Francis Did you know... The Westin Saint Francis was one of the first steel-framed buildings in Downtown San Francisco. Quick Trivia: Do you know what year the Westin Saint Francis opened for business? To find out, listen to The Westin Saint Francis Tour or wait for the next post. Second Stop: M...

Fisherman's Wharf

After a wonderful day of touring Union Square and the shops in Downtown San Francisco, I decided to head off to Fisherman's Wharf. Below you will find some interesting facts and photos from the places that I visited. Enjoy! First Stop: Pier 41 I found Pier 41 to be one of the best locations to view Alcatraz Island, as it is directly north of the Pier. If you plan on touring the island, you might want to get your tickets in advanced as they usually sell out at the booth. Travelers also should ...

If you haven't already guessed, Lotta's Fountain was given to the city of San Francisco from famed performer Lotta Crabtree in 1875. The first downtown park to have a parking garage built underneath it was Union Square in Downtown San Francisco. Forth Stop: Lotta's Fountain Did you know... That Lotta Crabtree was the highest paid actress of her time. Lotta also began performing at age 9 when she moved to the country. Trivia Question: Do you know what two events in the fountains history it is ...

So there we were, on a 6 hour flight from New York to San Francisco, and I realised, "This really sucks." By the time the Cabin Crew came to us there was no lunch left, my headphones didn't work so I couldn't watch the movie, there was a baby behind us making poo smells and her twin sister did nothing but cry. I started to count the number of annoying things about the flight but somehow, before I got to the end of the list, we'd landed; so I stopped worrying about the small things and started...

Historical Traveler Reviews of The Westin San Francisco Market Street

Este hotel es fantástico! Lo recomiendo!

from Bosybcn

Great location

from Ireland3
We were stayed in San Francisco for six nights. The location is great, five minutes walk from all shops. While we were there the hotel was undergoing the move to the Westin from the Argent Hotel. The restaurant was not great, but I understand they are building a new one. There was no bar but this might be rectified when the Westin take over properly. Rooms were an okay size, our room had no easy chair to sit on, when we ordered room service we had to sit on the bed. I expect more from a hotel of this star and price. If I was going back again, I would stay there as the location is what would sell it for me. The tram is around the corner to take you to Fishermans Wharf.

Nice, newly Remodeled but not Great

from PSTravelingMan
This hotel has seen many owners over the years and is now a newly remodeled Westin. Its a nice hotel but seems more of a Sheraton than a Westin. We are spg platinum members and received no upgrade, check in process was slow, many people were in the lobby complaining that their keys weren't working, ours didn't work as well.

Rooms were clean, beds are always comfortable at westins. Its a nice hotel, good location but still needs to work out some issues.

Great location and generally a good quality and comfortable hotel

from Interalios
We stayed at this hotel in June 2007. The hotel has just been refurbished having become a Westin hotel (previously the Argent Hotel). The rooms have the Westin Heavenly beds, toiletries etc. and are fitted out to a high, modern standard. The common areas of the hotel (restaurant, bar etc.) are also well equipped and this hotel has one of the most comprehensive Reebok gyms we have seen in a hotel (although note the hotel does not have a pool). The hotel is very centrally located on Market Street a couple of blocks from a BART station and near a tram/bus stop. The only complaint was that the service was sometimes patchy, for example, the rooms have complimentary Starbucks tea and coffee which, when we arrived, was stocked with decaffinated and caffinated coffee and a couple of varieties of tea. After the first service of the room, the cafinated coffee was restocked but not the tea and the coffee cups were not replaced so we had to request more decafinated coffee, one of the varieties of tea and some cups from reception. The room was then restocked with decafinated coffee, cups and more of the tea which was already in the room and none of the tea we had requested. On the second service, the cups were replaced, but we did not have decafinated coffee, which again we had to request from reception. With the exception of the problems with the service for the tea and coffee, this is a good, centrally located hotel to stay in in San Francisco.

Renovations at the Westin

from huibrela
The Westin Market Street has just been renovated. Love the heavenly beds as well as their work out facilities. This hotel is just a couple block walk to all the shopping of Union Square and just up from the Embarcadero. Great to walk down to the Ferry building and grab something for lunch.

Le Westin rénové

from huibrela

Nice hotel

from hawken
We stayed there in late May. Hotel was still undergoing renovation/transformation from Argent to Westin. Our room's furnishing and decor were tastefully modern. Unfortunately we had a corner room which was a bit smaller and oddly shaped, but overall it was pleasant experience. The bed was soooo comfy, which is to be expected as Starwood advertises it as a "heavenly bed". Large flat panel tv was nice too. Location is very close to public transport and shopping. Would probably have given it a 5 if we had the larger room we originally booked and if the renovation was complete.

Brand New - nice!

from zoomer-7
The on-line booking system is not real time. We booked on the sam day and ended up having to argue our point with reception to ensure they honoured our booking. This is a big problem with booking direct with large hotels on their system - sadly being memorial weekend did not help!

We arrived during an obvious refit. The new Westin will look great.

The room and location was brilliant. Brand new and re-furbished room with great facilities. The valet service for parking is exceptional.

This is the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever slept in - it was like a cloud!

Stay here and relax - it is perfect!

Great hotel...everything is brand new

from bw331
This property has been around for many years. Most recently it was the Argent hotel. The ownership decided to bring it under the Westin brand, making it the second Westin in downtown SF (the Westin St. Francis on Union Square being the other).

It just opened as a Westin in April and they are still finishing a new restaurant and the lobby. In order to become a Westin they had to renovate the rooms to Westin standard (heavenly bed, bath, etc). Therefore the rooms have just been renovated and they are simply great with the normal Westin things along with a 42 inch plasma TV and great desk chair.

The service was also excellent and when I had an issue (there were a couple with my bill), they were quickly fixed by the staff. The gym is great and the location is very good (although you should know it actually is on 3rd street, rather than Market, but it is close enough).

It's a great hotel and I would happily stay there again.

Loved the Westin

from Londoner29
Wanted to stay in the Chancellor, but that was fully booked so we spend 3 nights at The Westin. The Lobby was still being furnished whilst we were there but the very large room we stayed in with its own little foyer area had been done up. It had the new Heavenly bed and Bathroom design. Both were of excellent standard and I don't think I have slept in a hotel bed that was more comfortable, throw in the large plasma TVs and the exercise equipment (exercise bike, Swiss ball, skipping rope etc..) with the space to do the exec rises and I have to say I have not been in a room I have been happier in. On our trip going up the Californian coast this was by far the best hotel we stayed in.

The staff at the front desk were friendly and very helpful, and the concierge dealt with our enquires very quickly and booked a shuttle for us to the airport with minimal fuss.

If you stay here my advice is to park your car at the car park directly across the road as it is at least half the price of the hotel's valet parking. If I am in SF again, will definitely stay here.
