Day 2: My Own Personal "Restoration Day"

My first full day in the Dominican Republic just so happens to be a national holiday: El Día de Restauración (Restoration Day). Pretty much Independence Day #2 for Dominicans. The first Independence Day is in February when the DR gained independence from Haitian rule. The second (Aug 16) is Independence from Spain which occupied the country for two years after their first Independence from Haiti. Anyway, enough with the history. Let me now explain to you ...

Day 1: Tourism is scary, Dominicans are awesome

... My driver's name was Felix and I quickly learn that Dominican people may be some of the nicest I will ever meet. For example, I run into Felix later the next night at the Employees Club (hereon referred to as "the Club") donning a white tee, jeans and "Chucks" (converse) just beaming at me with his brilliant white teeth.

At the Foundation I meet Ivelisse who is the Coordinator for Virginia Tech groups in Punta Cana. She ...

a lazy week in Punta Cana

... reels while sipping your cocktail - that would be your cup of tea...I personally prefer roulette, although I am not much of a gambler myself... there are a few shops with some souvenirs and basics, so - if you forgot your bathing suite, no worries! - you can buy one here...by the way, speaking of bathing suites: many European women - regardless of age and body proportions - sunbathe topless, and for those of us who grew up there - it is natural and ...

Beautiful beaches...and Montezuma's Revenge

... tried to learn how to windsurf. We also went swimming with sea lions, a highlight for me. It was a great trip, although the last day and the few days after were unfortunately ruined by both of us getting pretty sick...Montezuma's Revenge claimed its latest victims!
Departure

Departure day. We didn't want to leave such a nice and tranquil place, but we had to, and besides which Ginny was waiting for us. We polished up our Spanish, though, if nothing else. Back to the dreaded airport. The departure hall has two temrinals, one of which is new, and is fully air-conditioned! So even if your flight leaves from Terminal 1, go and shop and wait in Terminal 2, it's way cooler. Aikwan heard two women speaking in Cantonese in one of the gift ...

SKIP IT - Especially in May

... sure I will not feel out of place again...I learned a lot of lessons after this trip - I'd say that is the only savings grace...

I know I won't stay at another Club Med - very disappointed in it. And despite my horrible time I cannot really blame DR for the bad time, as I didn't even leave the resort - but the bad taste has been left and I will just never go back!
SKIP IT - although, Day 1 went ok

... range - early 20s - so the staff kept hovering around us. Male employees mostly, which made us extremely uncomfortable. Constantly making inappropriate comments, always trying to talk to us, eying us up and down - really did not make for an enjoyable time.

The food also started to become monotonous and was not very good...and then the trip really started to go down hill.
SKIP IT - We almost didn't even get there!

... so I was ill prepared.

My roommate suggested that we try a club med - she had heard about them before and people seemed really happy going to them - she also liked the all-inclusive idea, which lets face it, I did too.

I flew out of Newark International and my roommate flew out of Charlotte...we were going to meet at another airport and then take the same flight to Dominican Republic. Her flight got delayed and the airline ...
