Very pleased with Westin
Actually, I would rate the hotel somewhere between "above average" (4 star) and "excellent" (5 star). I'm basically writing this review because I'm dismayed by some previous reviews.
The downside first. As a Starwood Preferred guest, and staying in a Westin in particular, one has every right to have high expectations. Four things strike me as NOT up to a normal Westin standard: 1. too few personnel at the check-in desk; 2. not a terribly pleasant lobby that encourages socializing with friends; 3. uneven room service; 4. no gym facility in the hotel (you have to go to a mall and pay).
Now the upside. Having the Westin attached to the Galleria is a ++. This provides for great shopping, attractive walking, and a quite decent food court with considerable variety.
Our room was immaculate--spacious, clean, light, completely upgraded.
Our room was cleaned by the time we finished breakfast. Very convenient.
We were at the Westin for a 3-day conference and the conference facilities were first-rate. In truth, this Westin served the best conference dinner I've ever eaten--this to several hundred scientists, physicians, and engineers.
Since we had an infant grandchild with us, the Westin provided everything we asked for and did so graciously and with great competence.
We would return to this hotel without hesitation. RWU
I just got back from a stay at the Westin Galleria Houston. The hotel is obviously old and the room was nothing special. Check-in was quick and my room was in ok shape, a few stains on the carpet, a freezing a/c, and a well used bathroom. This room could have existed in a Holiday Inn but in a Westin and at $200+ I expected better conditions.
The front desk a staff was efficient at check in but was unhelpful when we asked for a restaurant recommendation.
On the bright side, the 'heavenly bed' helped with my good-nights sleep.
Overall, it was not worth the money and is in need of renovation.
My stay was brief, only one night, but satisfactory. Upon arrival my reservation could not be found (by name or reservation number); however, the employee gave me the same rate and was very concerned about finding me a room away from the noise and traffic of the elevator.
The hotel is conveniently located in the mall, so you do not even have to step outside in the humidity to get to the mall. The mall was average, not spectacular.
The room was spacious, modern, clean, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom adequate.
I was surprised that the hotel allowed smoking in the lobby (I guess Texas is not as progressive on smoking bans as most states).
When I received my credit card statement later in the month I found that I had been charged twice. Upon calling the hotel I was told that I had only been charged once and that I was mistaken. I told the employee that I was not mistaken and that there were two charges on the statement. I faxed a copy of my statement to prove the error. Upon receipt, the employee said that I was charged a no-show fee because I had failed to occupy my reserved room (the one they could not find upon arrival with my name and reservation number). After four phone calls the issue was resolved and I received a credit on my following month's credit card statement.
Overall, if you want a hotel with easy access to the mall and a comfortable bed I would recommend staying at this hotel, but if you want more I would chose another hotel.
The room is not Westin quality
Service upon arrival was excellent: the valet was efficient and the bellhops were quick to help. The lobby was clean and well appointed. So far so good.
On the way to the room, It appeared we switched hotels. The hall to the rooms had the character of a college dorm and the decor was well worn. The room was a large size and the furniture was "trendy", but everthing was very worn out. The carpet was stained and some of the furniture was stained and torn. As expected, the bed was very nice and comfortable. The bathroom was the worse. The toilet took about 20 seconds to flush and the bath was very shallow. The tile work was sloppy and there was a permanent boot print on the tile from a worker. The vent was also dusty and the shower was not the cleanest. The room was 3 diamond caliber at best and not worth the $200 price.
The service is good and the location very convenient, but the room needed a complete remodel. I cannot recommend it for the price.
Two weeks of horrible service
I just came back from two weeks spent at the Westin Galleria in Houston. Believe me when I tell you if you are looking for a good business hotel - THIS ISN'T IT. From the lack of customer service, to the lack of decent food, this hotel doesn't even come close to living up to the Westin name.
One evening at 7pm I placed a call to their guest services line to request an additional bottle of shampoo. One and a half hours, and four additional phone calls later, I finally received another bottle of shampoo. When I called the manager to state that this was unacceptable I was told - sorry, we were busy.
One morning I placed a call to room service and ordered yogurt, granola and fruit - a breakfast that didn't require any cooking time. After 40 minutes I called down to find out where my food was only to be told that they forgot the order and would get it to me in 20 minutes. Since I was going to be late to my meeting I told them not to bother. Don't even TRY the pizza - I've had better in China!
When I asked where there fitness center was located I was told they didn't have one, but that there was one in the mall that I could use for $13.00 a day.
The personnel were rude and ill mannered, and didn't care if you had concerns about anything. I have never stayed at a hotel where I have felt so uncomfortable or unhappy - I would have been better off at a Travelodge! Save your money and go some where else!
The rooms are filthy...
We stayed at the Westin Galleria Nov. 20th to 25th with the idea that we would be in the heart of one of Houstons premier shopping malls. Because we know this area well, and we thought the Westin had a good reputation (and it claimed to have completed a $28 Million renovation last year) we booked online. What HUGE disappointment! The room we had (1754) was absolutly FILTHY. The carpets were stained, the windows inside had thousands of hand prints on them so they hadn't been cleaned in ages, the bathroom tiles had mildew and the vent had half an inch of lint and dust on it. The maid informed us that they only vacuumed every other day and sheets were changed only if requested. Don't waste your money here!!
Great for shopping
This hotel is located within the Galleria Shopping Mall. So, if you plan on shopping, this is the best place to stay. The hotel is quite modern, but servces are not that good. Anyway, I highly recommend it and will stay again.
My husband and I stay here several nights a month just to relax. This hotel is conveniently located within the Galleria Mall. You are steps away from great shopping and restaurants, such as The Cheescake Factory, also located within the Galleria. The heavenly beds and showers make every stay relaxing. This hotel provides impeccable housekeeping, excellent room service, and upscale amenities.
Poor check in personel knowledge. Slow and confused with check in procedures.
No fresh air ventalation in rooms. Bathroom vents dirty and clogged. No opening windows or vents.
No food service on holidays, i.e. Easter. Limited food room service after 10:00 p.m.
Charges for DSL internet service $9.95 (Noon-Noon). Should be free like Doubletree, Shariton hotels have. Need to upgrade to Wi-Fi wireless for all floors.
Room service asks for cash at delivery.
Loved the Westin Galleria
We stayed at the Westin Galleria two weeks ago and it was wonderful. The rooms were clean and very big and the staff were extrememly friendly. The hotel has been renovated in the past few months and had a very modern decor. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
