... priced options. Had dinner at Iris at the Golden Nugget and it was quite good. The following day we had essentially had a full day of tours. The first one took us to "Gold Dredge #8". The first thing we did here was to have a presentation on the Alaskan Pipeline. We found this quite interesting and took numerous pics. We then went on a short trainride where the different methods of collecting gold were described and demonstrated. All very interesting! ...

... of construction areas where we have to follow a pilot car. I can’t remember if I mentioned it or not but they are burying a fiber optic cable along the highway up to Prudhoe Bay. That will improve communications all along the route providing telephone, TV and internet and who knows what else. I predict they will have it done before the snow falls.

... and they bring it to you. We are joined by a couple that pulled in beside us. They are from Maine and his wife is French with a heavy accent. We enjoy our meal, a pulled pork BBQ sandwich and a mushroom and Swiss burger, a soda and we shared a dessert of rhubarb cobbler and ice cream. I picked out a T-shirt as a souvenir and our bill was $71. Welcome to the Tundra!

... br> We eventually get to Coldfoot which is the most northerly USA stop for truckers. Typical truckers type stop, accomodation two single beds in a fairly small room but comfortable. Food was brilliant though with both a good hearty evening meal and breakfast the following morning.
The moskitos are a real problem - I am being bitten to death, likely I brought some antihistamines, so in the end a good night's sleep.

The pipeline runs parallel to the road and is visible most of the time. We got a close up look at the pipeline. The pipeline is above ground because the frozen tundra and permafrost areas are unstable for putting the pipeline underground.
