Exploring the temples of Ankor Wat
A rough nights sleep with the 35 degree + temp, but the fan in the room worked well. We decided to move guesthouses today, and upgraded (US$15) to a place with pay TV, air conditioning, fridge etc. Our room wasnt ready on arrival so we were upgraded to a room with two double beds, great for storing our packs (or throwing our clothes everywhere). …
Running Amok in Cambodia
I landed in Siem Reap Friday after sunset and was immediately struck by how dark it was. There were no lights outside the immediate airport area and I could tell we were someplace very remote. This was the jungle. In contrast, the airport blinded me with the lights of modernity, people flowing through the immigration lines with "e-visas" they had …
The extension to The Villa Siem Reap
It was two years ago when i last stayed at the Villa and since then Fiona Kidston and Anthony Jaensch have bought the land adjacent and built in a nice garden area... as well as a bar. This will most likely serve as the principal vantage point for my Uncle Gary, Pop and Dad to view Cambodia from when they come over with the rest of my mum's family …
Siem Reap & Angkor Wat
It's getting harder and harder to know how to start a blog.... with all the countries and places we've been to so far, it feels contrived to say something like "This is SO amazing, etc etc". But it's true. Siem Reap is beautiful, developing, and so charming. And the temples of Angkor Wat that lie surrounding this city (which is a term I use loosely …

Historical Traveler Reviews The Villa Siem Reap
Enjoyed my stay at Villa Siem Reap
Nice hotel with great service. Rooms and common area are very clean and spacious. My room the first night was quiet, but my room the second two nights was rather loud as it faced the wall dividing the hotel and a place that had live music. I was so tired from walking around the temples all day that the noise didn't really keep me awake and I believe it only lasted until 10-11pm anyway. The hotel provide the option of making a lunch for you to take to the temples, which was a nice amenity. Please note the hotel is cash only, despite requiring a credit card for booking.
Undeniably clean and value for money
It was a fantastic experience visiting Siem Reap and Angkor Wat and it was mostly due in part thanks to The Villa Siem Reap.
The Villa Siem Reap is fantastic. Unlike bigger establishments I have stayed in elsewhere, the Villa Siem Reap was able to offer very hospitable services and it was like staying at home.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food and drinks were reasonable in price and tasty to the palate. The complimentary breakfast offered was filling and it helped kick start the day especially when one had to built-up as much energy as possible to explore all those fascinating temples.
I was very happy when they offered a free pick-up from the airport with complimentary drinks. In addition, they helped arrange a tuk-tuk driver which we hired the whole time we were there, very reasonably. I strongly recommend that you ask for Mr. Han Monny, as he is one of the best drivers around.
The rooms were so surprisingly clean and large plus you could get about 66 channels on the TV in almost all major languages.
The Villa Siem Reap is a place I will definitely go back to. Totally satisfied with the value and service it gave.
Great place to stay, economical and very clean!
A great place to stay. It's near the Old market area, just a 10 mins walk. People are friendly and helpful. VERY Clean.. food are so so. but then most of the things you can get at the old market area or in a convenient store at the gas station. Would strongly recommend this place to stay. The trips that they provide are helpful as well.. try the kampong phluk tour (the floating village near tonle sap), very rewarding experience. book early before your trip as there are limited rooms available.
Five stars for value
What a great place! $US35 a night for a really nice room with all the mod cons - air con, minibar, ensuite, satellite television. Service was very good - the local staff are incredibly polite and are working hard at improving their English.
Food was fine and good value.
They organise drivers and tours.
Location was pretty good - easy to walk into the old market area. It got a bit noisy in the early evening from the restaurant next door, but that died down at a reasonable hour.
Highly recommended.
My driver - Samret - was really good. Very reliable and I can recommend him. He told me some pretty awful stores about his life under the Khmer Rouge which were very eye-opening. It was great for me (a history teacher) to get such a personal account of this time in Cambodia's history.
Great value, would stay again
Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Everything worked fine: A/C, toilet, shower, etc. The TV had some reception problems at one point, but I think this was due to a problem with the cable company. Anyway, we didn't spend much time watching TV!
We never met the owners, but the friendly employees were able to help us with everything we needed -- arranging a driver ($20/day), laundry ($2.50/load), etc. The room rate included a free breakfast of thick toast, coffee and tea, and other food was also available.
Suggested improvements:
-Install towel racks and hooks! (The room had precious few places to hang a towel or other wet items.)
-Install ashtrays on the balconies. (Smoking is only allowed on the balconies and in the restaurant.)
-Offer a meal discount in lieu of the toast (this might be negotiable, but was not offered).
Overall, it was a great place to stay & we would stay there again next time in Siem Reap.
Wonderful
Visited Siem Reap about a month ago expecting it to be pretty much similar to Phnom Penh. To my surprise, Siem Reap was pretty much better, nicer and cleaner than its capital. Arriving at Siem Reap with a couple of my friends with the bus from the capital, we were delighted to see Mr Sari, a van driver already waiting for us at the bus station. He spoke considerably good english that we could understand and communicate with us as well. He greated us warmly and took us to The Villa immediatey. We, eventually hired him to take us around Siem Reap for the next 3 days. He are very thankful for such a wonderful and friendly person. Upon arrival at the hotel, i was pretty much amazed and delighted with the warm cozy feeling the hotel gave us. The staff there were also very friendly and didn't give us any problems communicating with them. I stayed in a triple sharing room for USD30. The room has a very nice and cozy ambience like the surroundings of the hotel. It was fully furbished, cleaned with pretty anything a traveler needs. Shampoo, towels, cheap mini bar(compared to many other hotels) and laundry services as well. Overall, the hotel gave us lots of help and a wonderful experience in our visit to Siem Reap. I would recommend any visitor to Siem Reap with an average budget to stay at this hotel. You'll get much more than you expect. PS: The hotels recommendation of Mr Sam as our tour guide was really great. Mr Sam gave us a wonderful experience at the Temples of the Angkor.
Talk about value for money
My girlfriend and I were staying at the Villa Siem Reap for our entire trip to Siem Reap from 25th to 30th of June 2006, I must say it was truly a wonderful experience. We paid USD25.00 NETT for one night (which included breakfast by the way), and it was really worth every penny.
We were rather surprised (pleasantly surprised) when we first entered the room, it came with a load of stuff which we thought would greatly enhance our stay. 1 Queen-sized and 1 single beds, air-conditioning (by National, that's a good brand you know), satelite TV (though not quite clear for FIFA World Cup(tm) 2006 but it was ok), in-room washroom, Hot Water for showers, and basic toiletries (shampoo, shower gel, soap, towels).
All the staffs there spoke reasonably good English, and they were very friendly, polite and professional. I was just telling my girlfriend that for some big hotels back home, it was difficult to find such polite and professional hotel personnel. The owner - Fiona, was very helpful in assisting us with some pretty useful travel tips to the temples. She was very friendly and made us felt right at home.
The taxi arrangement (recommended by Fiona) was really a good idea (with all the rain that poured down those few days), USD20.00 NETT per day pretty much took care of our transportation needs to most temples. It was safe and the driver was very professional and patient too.
We would recommend the Villa Siem Reap to our family and friends in a heart beat, it was truly a wondering experience. It was very nice to come back to some place so homely, comfortable and safe after a long and tiring day of travelling and visiting to the temples.
Thank you Fiona and your team.. fantastic job. We hope to return to Siem Reap someday for another visit.
Areas for improvement, perhaps:
(1) Toilet can't flush properly, I'm sure this's easily fixed (ROOM 201);
(2) TV unclear at times (though TV was not a priority, but watching news at night before sleep would be needed, for some.. for me, it was World Cup(tm));
Other than that, everything was excellent.. for USD25.00!
Great Australian run guest house away from the main street in Siem Reap
Early in June we spent 3 nights in the Villa Siem Reap. We had a marvellous time in this guest house run by two young Australians. We ate each meal in the lovely courtyard at the front and each day went in Mr Han's tuk tuk to the temples. Fiona and Anthony were able to educate us on the culture of Cambodia. They were able to give us great suggestions on places to visit in the township of Siem Reap. Our room was spotlessly clean, a very large comfortable bed and a spare one to spread out our gear!! The bathroom was large and the room was light and airy. We had an airconditioner to cool the room down. The floors in the guest house are tiled so there is always a cooling atmosphere. The staff are so friendly and with Fiona and Anthony's help they are learning English and the ways of running a guest house and restaurant. We thoroughly recommend this place to all people who want to stay in Siem Reap away from the many 5 star hotels where you close the door of your hotel room and don't assimialte with the culture. Lonely Planet should list this accomodation in their book. We met a traveller who stayed in the one of the guest houses recommended in the Lonely Planet book who was disgusted at the service and the rudeness of the owner.
The Villa Siem Reap is a must stay when you are visiting Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor.

Superb room
We have just returned from a 3 days and 2 night at the Villa Siem Riep.
The inn is magnificent and we have never expected for such a cozy and clean room for such a price.
It reallly exceeds our expectation and the service provided is excellent.
I would definately return to the same inn on my next trip to Siem Reap.
Fantastic experience
The Australian owners Anthony and Fiona made our stay here wonderful. They have only had the place a short period of time and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. We only had 4 nights in Siem Reap as a stopover on the way to Australia. Fiona organised a suggested itinerary before we arrived. Some of which included: sunset experience, wandering the temples, checking out the local villages, silk farm with packed lunch if we were going afar. Mr Haw our tuk-tuk driver for the time we stayed, picked us up from the airport with an esky full of drinks (cool box) and took us the scenic way to the guesthouse. Mr Haw definitely added to the experience and since we were limited on time, it was great not to have the hassle of sorting transport everywhere. The Villa has been recently renovated. We had a lovely deluxe room with queen size bed, fridge, TV, aircon, ensuite shower with purple feature wall... The villa arranged khmer massages on-site.... wonderful, if not physically challenging. The food is fairly westernised, a big breakfast was included. Meals and drinks are served outside in a large gazebo / wooden awning thingy... local style. You are better off checking out the local restaurants in the town centre nearby for dinner. Abacus restaurant and bar was in walking distance and is highly recommended. Better value and quality than some of the touristy venues in town. The Dead Fish bar was a hoot, seating is on different levels and has live music and a hostel attached. The Red Piano bar and restaurant was fun - sit on the street and watch the world go by. Fiona and Anthony can recommend good places to eat. On every Saturday night there is a fundraising cello concert for the childrens hospital by a local Doctor - beatocello (worth a visit) Make sure you try The Villa's best cocktail: The Siem Reap. The room rates are definitely the best value for money, so many of the large hotels are overpriced and have no atmosphere. $15USD per standard room with deluxe about $30USD. Great for couples, business folk or friends.
Tip: the local market sells North Face rucksacks, laptop bags and day packs for a fraction of the cost (near where they make them)... mine is still going strong. Buy more silk scarves than you think you want - they make great presents. Remember to bring a couple of passport photos and USD for visa on arrival and donation to rebuild the airport on the way out. In Dec 2005 there were NO ATMs so take cash. ANZ are due to open an ATM during 2006. Siem Reap is great fun, dusty and interesting. (---)
