We arrived in Pretoria before 5 am. Everyone's stories about how violent and dangerous South Africa is (mostly J'burg but other cities as well) had us pretty scared, even though it was completely bright at this time. We found a place to store our bags at the old Victoria Hotel across from the train station. At the hotel we met a fascinating older English gentleman who worked as a train and travel consultant in South Africa. He was quite the extravagant and well dressed polite English gentlema...
Pretoria, South Africa mrewkowskiIt was our last full day of the program, and we had a pretty good city tour of Johannesburg and Pretoria. We left the hotel at 8 am and hit some rush-hour traffic going into Jo'burg. Rudolf gave some informative commentary as we drove, pointing out UNISA, a university with 200,000 enrolled students, most of whom take classes online. He made comments about the coal-fired power plants (source of 85% of South Africa’s electricity), some of which were closed down and ...
Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa mebinerHey everybody, I'm staying at the Isiphiwo Guesthouse in Pretoria, South Africa. We have done prison ministry and ministry to orphans, the elderly, and at hospitals. We have seen several hundred people healed so far, I have led a few dozen people to the Lord, and it has really been amazing. I am heading out right now to go to a mall and minister, but I pray you are doing well. Thank you for your support and prayers. Shalom, Luke
Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa lukeoverstreetIt comes to something that even when the Skype cameras don't work too well that you can still have hours of entertainment and fun with your sister, simply by trying to take pictures of your nose and the inside of your mouth! Quite similar indeed. And then there was the demonstration of the fibre-optic ...
Pretoria, South Africa off_road_clara... restaurants and stores are open and besides helping to direct you they watch the cars to prevent break-ins or vandalism. It is customary to tip the person who helped you when you are on your way back to the car to leave. A tip of R2 is sufficient. Once back at the lodge Jim loaned me the power cord for his computer. It had a two prong plug while mine had a three prong plug. His power cord worked just fine with my computer and visitor outlet adapter.
Irene, South Africa plkoppelAnother early morning, leaving at 6, to complete our last really long drive day. At 8 am we pulled up to soem mountian in Lesotho, and were told it was a guided tour up the mountain due to soem history of a king of Lesotho. I was FAST asleep when we stopped so was so not in teh mood to trek up this mountain but after the climb up to clear the cobwebs i was actually really pretty and very itneresting to hear about the King and the history of the monarchy of the ...
Royal Natal, South Africa rachellocke... as a herd of impala. A red hartebeest could be seen quite close to the vehicle. We could not resist the temptation to see the lions again and returned to their enclosure. To complete our African animal experience we visited the cub sector. The park has lion cubs, tiger cubs and a cheetah cub. Tigers have been brought from Asia to help preserve the species. Although the tigers will never be released into the wild, the species will survive. The cheetah ...
Johannesburg, South Africa pachi... have seen and heard, what they would tell me if they could speak. I think that goes back to the time that dad took me into a house that was under construction in Uncle Tom's neighborhood, across the street from the old house that I used to live in. I couldn't have been more than 4, but I vividly remember the bright pink of the insulation and the raw skeleton of the framework. In a sense, I believe that dream has a lot to ...

Pretoria, South Africa estherbunny... just finished studying Xhosa for the night. I have a test at 9 a.m. I watch an episode of The Cosby Show and fall asleep. Twenty minutes later, a knock comes at my door. I ignore it. No one needs me right now. The knocker persists. I answer the door to find the sub-warden (more or less an RA) and a Campus Protection Services officer at my door. "Squatter check." I squint my eyes at them. "What?" "SQUATTER CHECK." Apparently they want to enter my room so I just sort of wave my ...
