Zim side of Victoria Falls

Start of the trip after delays at LHR and a fluid free zone on the plane. Met a couple at check in who where on the same trip, Zoe and Gareth (Brother and sister) and we proceeded to get aquainted with vic falls and all it had to offer....which seems to be the falls and that's all, unless you do the Lion park as we found out from two new arrivals to the group Karin and Ann, who had just spent the afternoon with the Lions petting, playing, walking and whatever else their nerves let them. and a...

Opulent and decadent

This morning we loaded in to a van and headed for Zimbabwe. The ride was pretty spectacular on both sides of the border and it was very quick even though we had quite a long wait at the border (there were loads of us on the van). Once we got in to Zimbabwe it was steady upward drive (naturally, we were going to see a waterfall after all) with a few elephants along the way. We spoke to Edwin, our driver, before we left and arranged for him to drop us at the Vic Falls hotel - so we left the day...

In 1983 Zimbabwe is relatively prosperous. The farms have not been taken over etc. Lush green after Botswana. The bakeries make some pretty good bread. Went to see Victoria Falls. They are everything they are cracked up to be. I have only one regreat thou, I didn't take the airplane ride over the falls. I should have but the beer was cold in the Victoria fFalls hotel and I was lasy. A lesson was learned today. Don't think twice, just do it!

Our Honeymoon

Hi All So after a fantastic wedding and seeing all our wonderful friends and family back home, we needed a little time out just Brendon and Me. We flew up to Vic falls for a little touch of Africa. We stayed at the beautiful Vic Falls hotel, which although looked a little worn was still 5 star service and fantastic food. We were limited in picking what to do because we had to consider "the bump" which is growing fast and becoming demanding. We did an awesome canoe trip where we sat in the can...

Another day and another early start on the road. I had a rather uncomfortable night caused by a reaction to the malaria pills I've been taking and had pretty bad indigestion. The trip back on the hellish road was twice as bad, but what with my manboobs and bloated belly I was beginning to wonder whether the doctor had given me some dodgy pills. All day we drove past small dusty villages and kids expecting handouts. We made camp in the grounds of Rufunsa School just as the sun set amongst a cr...

4 Minutes, the Big 5, and a million stars - Part 3

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe - to say we did it in style would be an understatement. Victoria Falls Hotel is perched on top of the Zambezi River with incredible views of the gorge and bridge stretching from Zimbabwe to Zambia (which we walked across; first time we've changed countries by foot). We have now shared the same hotel as royalty. The Queen Mother stayed there in the 1940s or 50s and there is a certain regal feel to the place with beautiful gardens and wonderful service. The highlight of...

Sunday was a bit of an uneventful day as by my true style I had a bit of a hangover from last night! Managed to get very drunk wit the girls especially Eileen, mad American, Emma W, cool Brit and Hattie. Doing Tequila shots which is never a god thing ;o) Had such a laugh last night as Ruth and Eileen did a dance routine for me, well if you can call it that. It only lasted 30 seconds and it was more of a lap dancing show than anything else. I was nearly crying watching them! Did have a nice da...

The end is nigh!

Well it is now the 25th June and my last day in Victoria Falls and on the lion project!! I can't believe how quickly my time here in Africa has gone, only seems like yesterday that I was packing up to leave the UK. Ah well I have had some great experiences and met some wonderful people in the process. Also a few dodgy ones but we don't need to mention them :o) Best update you all on what I have been doing over the past week or so then. Well, I went on another trip to a place called Miombo, wh...

Historical Traveler Reviews of The Victoria Falls Hotel

Romantic Getaway

from imotep
We have just returned from a five day stay at the Victoria Falls hotel celebrating our 25 year wedding anniversary.

The hotel is magnificent and the people working there are very friendly and helpful. The hotel reminds one of the Victorian era with wide passages and big verandas where one can sip cocktails while looking at the magnificent views. The room where very comfortable with the biggest bed we ever saw with the Victorian theme very evident complete with mosquito net. Breakfast is a feast so we seldom had lunch and rather waited for dinner. The pool area is lovely, with waiters catering for all needs. You even could have lunch there at tables around the pool. The pool was also nice and roomy if you want to do laps working of the breakfast. The hotel has a spa. My wife had a massage which she said was very good.

A very nice place to go and relax. Beware of money changers on the street where they offer you a better rate than the official bank rate. It is against the law a can land you in jail. The Victoria Falls is magnificent and we took some nice photographs.

The restaurants at the casino next to the hotel are very expensive and we would recommend a local restaurant called Mamma Africa just next to the railway station where real Africa food is offered at very good prices with very good live music. We also tried the Boma restaurant. Nice but expensive.

We also went on a sunset cruise and night drive which the hotel organized.

At the market be prepared to bargain hard and start at half the price first offered.

Overall I would say the hotel offers good value for money. We will definitely return.

Best access to the falls

from Hates_Flying
The Victoria Falls Hotel is an old Victorian style hotel which has very well-appointed public spaces. Its rooms are also very comfortable and stylish. On the grounds are wart hogs, monkeys, and baboons. This hotel has the best access to the falls. Given the fact that the falls were completely dry on the Zambia side because this was the dry season, this was pretty important. A security guard is on the path leading the falls, which makes the environment safe. This is the only place to stay when visiting Victoria Falls.

Vom Hotel begeistert

Great hospitality

We have just returned from a week in Zimbabwe spending 3 nights at the Victoria Falls Hotel and 3 nights at Matetsi Game Lodge. The hotel is an impressive grand old building of a byegone colonial era full of antique furniture and memoribilia. The setting is unsurpassed at the Falls as it overlooks the gorge below them and one can see the spray of the Falls themselves. Our room overlooked the gorge and the beautiful gardens. It was pure luxury to have morning coffee brought to the room by a smiling waiter on a silver tray and to contemplate the view. The standard of the service is excellant with a large number of staff to cater to your every need.We got ot know a number of the staff who were incredibly friendly and hospitable. We did have misgivings about travelling to zimbabwe because of the virtual collapse of the economy, but are so glad that we were not deterred.Despite these problems the standard of food and beverages was excellant. The only reservation we had was that for those of us paying in South African rands the dinners and drinks were relatively pricey, but then you staying at the top hotel in the area.It was heartening to hear from the manager that this year has been the best for the hotel since 1999.People should not be deterred from visiting this country and its beautiful people and we would strongly recommend that they stay at The Vic Falls Hotel.

We loved this hotel

from overoceans
Aside from the historical context of this hotel, resident staff are what made our stay so pleasant. Not once did someone cross my path without giving me a friendly smile and asking me how I was. The location of the hotel is excellent. We sat on the lovely lawn and watched bungee jumpers from a distance jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge (the highest commercial bungee jump in the world). The one downfall of the hotel is that most meals are quite expensive. (Once can take a short walk to Kingdom next door for more reasonably priced meals). When taking the path to the falls, there are quite a few vendors which tend to hassle tourists to purchase their curios. The hotel hires security and the government's tourist security also patrol the path. So if you don't want to deal with vendors, ask the guard to accompany you on your walk from the hotel to the entrance of the falls.

I would suggest going to the post on 'what do you suggest for money'

to help make your trip as pleasant as ours was. We had a great time and enjoyed the warm hospitality of Zimbabweans. We will definitely go back.

Beautiful

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in this hotel this summer and also last summer.

Beautiful hotel, celebrating it's 101 year anniversary.

Directly looks out to the bridge and the falls.

Close to walk to shops and around the corner from it's sister hotel/casino .

Victoria Falls is between the two countries of ZIMBABWE and ZAMBIA. We stayed in nice hotels on both sides. This is a beauiful hotel . There are most tourists on the ZAMBIA side right now, but the ZIMBABWE side is very friendly and needs the business. The meals were lovely, fine dining supurb.

This is definitely one of the top three hotels to stay in in Victoria Falls in our opinion. All are very very nice and beautiful. The currency in ZIMBABWE is not doing well, so credit cards and American Dollars or Euros are accepted and welcomed more than the Zim dollar.

The location and design of this hotel is just superb. The hotel is straight from Edwardian times with fantastic public rooms and a wonderfull terrace. Our bedroom was in the original part of the hotel and although small the room was superbly equipped with edwardian style tester bed. The key asset the hotel has are its staff - each of whom goes out of their way to make your stay special...in a country whre service is not great they go the extra mile. The food was fantastic and the outdoor restaurant really pleasant. Highly recommend this hotel
