Breakfast at 0630 - thought this was a holiday!!! 0700 off to the floating markets - in point of fact we were late - most other people were on their way back!! We went by long tail boat - ace!!!! Poor girl on the boat was very timid - she got no sales - her husband really wanted her to try harder - bless! The market was amazing - totally local - loads of fruit and veggies in huge quantities a lovely start to the day. Nhad then suggested we stop off at a stork sanctuary on the way to Chau Doc ...
Chau Doc, Vietnam andrewslanother long journey! i left Cambodia yesterday afternoon on a boat down the Mekong River. yesterday morning i went to the orphanage and spent time with the kids and helped them with their english. it was fun, and i have more concrete plans about going back to teach there now. just for a week or so, but they are so keen and eager to learn, i will make them fluent!! one boy turned it back on me, and tried to get me to count in khmer. he made me repeat it over and over...jeez, such a difficult ...
Saigon, Vietnam ruthieAfter spending New Years in Saigon, we fly to Danang and transfer to the town of Hoi Ahn. Check into the Hotel Victoria, located on Cua Dai Beach. Despite a day of rain and poor food in the hotel, its a relaxing experience. Even had time to have some clothing made in town.
Hoi Ahn, Vietnam soohyungMay 22, 2007 - Chau Doc, Vietnam (how do they do this for $14?) Had to be at the "ticket office" in Phnom Penh before 8:00 am. We weren't really sure what the whole process was going to be, other than we take a bus to the boat. Our taxi arrives at the office at 7:50, and we see a big tourist bus pulling away. Yikes. We're on time. No other bus waiting. We thought we were going on this trip with a bunch of backpackers. Turns out we're the only ones (dumb enough?) to take the trip rather than t...
Chau Doc, Vietnam suttonfWhen you cross the border between Cambodia and Vietnam, an invisible line is passed and the kramas disappear only to be replaced by conical hats, flowing ao dais and mono-print pyjamas. The river's banks become more industrious, and then, as we take a right to head south from the Mekong to the Bassac River somnolent Cambodia is left behind and boisterous Vietnam arrives. Chau Doc sits at the junction of this bridging canal and the Bassac River. A thriving trading hub, Chau Doc is incredibly b...

... buffallo carts, bikes heavily laden with rice stalks, rice thrashing tractor machines, as well as the usual hazards of chickens, children, cows, dogs, etc etc. Everybody in this part of the world was so friendly, smiling, waving and shouting hello as we passed. When the rice dodging got too much we would pull over at a hammock bar for an ced coffee or tea and one particular group of ladies found our phrasebook vietnamese so amusing that they offered us to stay the night in the ...
Chau Doc, Vietnam niaandandrew... cheek really hard. I got myself a bowl of fish pho and then walked along by the river stopping to have my picture taken with groups of teenagers who hang out waiting for people. If the idea of complete strangers wanting to take your picture upsets you, I wouldn't recommend coming to small town Vietnam. With bright pink hair. Or becoming a model. I went down to the river for a little look across what is more like a lake because it's so close to the sea. I ...
Chau Doc, Vietnam dolly_would...... Families lived on some of these boats with almost everything in full view. Kids were waving and shouting frantically at tourists, women washing clothes and trying to sell stuff and blokes asleep in hammocks. It's good to see that some cultures still understand equal distribution of labour. After the market we continued upstream and entered a small tributary. The situation hadn't changed from the previous day with no one having a clue what was going on. The boats pulled in and we ...
Chau Doc, Vietnam prbrown... came out in Vietnam. It truly is the best way to explore another country/culture.
> Motorbikes... my love of the bike may have started in Thailand but it really evolved in Vietnam. I loved riding with Danh feeling the breeze (and the rain) on my face... feeling like I was really a part of the culture, not just whizzing by it on a bus.
> The closeness of people of the same sex (in a non-sexual way)... teenage girls walking down the street holding ...
Chau Doc, Vietnam mickeymo... noon we were escorted off the boat to exit Cambodia. They had us in and out in no time. I bought a Coke Light from a little girl just before we re-boarded. A 10 minute boat ride later we were at the Vinh Xoung (sounds like Vin Song) customs office. We had to remove all of our bags from the boat and were able to have lunch while they processed our paperwork. I had noodle soup with beef and Bill had rice with chicken and a Coke ($7). We boarded a different ...
