Off to Melbourne

After a semi-exciting week in Sydney whose highlights included watching the Super Bowl at 10 am with about 100 Americans down at Coogee Beach (which included my roommate Ryan, Eric (who goes to Chicago GSB) and Leslie's friend Kim) and going out on Wednesday night, I left for Melbourne early Friday morning. And by early, I mean insanely early, since I had to get up at 5 am. Fortunately, getting to the airport for me is pretty easy as I live about a 10 minute walk (or a very short cab or bus r...

Hottest.....Day......Ever

Well, what can I say about Satruday in Melbourne. This was one of the weirdest experiences of my life. We awoke around 11 and turned on the news to find out that the current temperature was 104 degrees. At 11 am. By the time we got outside to walk around for lunch, the temperature reached 116 degrees. It was easily the hottest temperature I've ever felt. In fact, it was the hottest recorded day in the history of Melbourne. I'm not sure what the odds are that I would happen to be there on that...

Melbourne

Jan. 29. Arrived Melbourne aound 6:00 PM. We took a taxi to our hotel - the Victoria on Little Collins Street. It's an older hotel and not the Ritz but so far quite nice. The desk clerk helped us arrange a city tour for Jan. 30th. What a fantastic city! Our tour took us to most areas downtown and up into the hills in the suburbs. There are loads of parks. There are many, many sporting venues - Cricket stadiums, footbal stadiums, swimming pools, tennis courts. Remember that Melbourne hosted th...

Melbourne identity - that's the best I could do

When you fly into Melbourne's Avalon airport, you're nowhere near Melbourne, just so you know. I didn't know that and couldn't believe we had a 78km drive to Melbourne from the airport. 78km! Ryanair would love this place. Our flight had been cancelled last minute and we'd bundled onto a later flight at a more suitable time. Only rub was that we were basically sent to sit at either end of the cabin. I relished my new found freedom and ordered 14 beers and hit on the airhostess (not really). W...

New Years in Melbourne

When my mom and dad lived in East Melbourne over 30 years ago, they became friends with Trevor Barr. His daughter, Jo, is a few months younger than me. Jo and I met when my dad and I came back to Australia together when I was 8 years old and again 12 years ago when I came for a visit to Australia on my own before starting university. On the trip just over a decade ago, Jo was finishing high school and had a tight group of friends who I spent a lot of time with during the 5 days I was there. I...

Great location...but...

from pj813
Good location they are doing construction across the street, starting at 5:30 am! If you wake up early, then fine, but otherwise this is a huge inconvenience. If you are on a budget, this place is a good deal, close to the CBD, very well located, but the rooms are shabby, slightly dirty, and the fitness area was "closed" during our entire stay. A perk - they have high speed internet available. But if you can afford better, choose somewhere else!

Watch out!! There might be a mouse in your room

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in this hotel for several nights.

It was an extremely uncomfortable experience.

The elevators in the hotel are very old and terrible.

The most terrible thing is I saw a mouse running in my own room!!

This hotel only change my room without any formal apology and help.

They don't care about customer's feeling and health!!

We never stay anywhere else

We visit Melbourne every three months or so, and always stay here. Great value for money, buffet breakfast included with some rates and is terrific.

Rooms neat, clean and bathrooms small but clean (no bathroom in economy room though). You do not really need to go economy as they have great rates for regional people.

It is an old hotel, and it is not the ritz, the floors squeak, no views, and the corridor walls need painting, and some carpet is quite old, but who cares. It is so convenient!! out the door and you are in the centre of town, surrounded by shops.

Only slight issue, is that it only has a small carpark, but you can park cheaply in a nearby carpark, but once you discover you have to park here, you have to go around the block to get to it (and blocks are big in Melbourne)!

Convenient but ........

Good central location but in Sept 2004 much noise from building site across the road. Had a "superior" room so no shared facilities, but very basic, although spacious. As we found all through our Australian trip, the concept of service in hotels is sadly lacking, here the breakfast room was strict to the minute on opening times, and there was always a queue to show your breakfast vouchers. did not dine in of an evening so cannot comment on this aspect. No atmosphere in the bar.

Not bad

I stayed at the Vic on a business trip. This is a fantastic location in the centre of Melbourne - you cannot get a better location for the same price.

Only problem was that our travel agent didn't tell us that there are two types of rooms - Superior and Economy. If you book the Economy room (like us) you will be in an older wing of the Hotel in a room which has no shower or toilet. There are communal showers and toliets which were, I must say, extremely clean. Our room smelled of smoke even though we requested a non-smoking room.

On the whole, the Economy rooms provide good accommodation if all you plan to do at the hotel is sleep. FANTASTIC LOCATION!!!

This hotel has a fantastic location, an appealing lobby, extremely pleasant staff, good prices, and decent, freshly-painted accomodation. BUT the bed was absolutely the world's most uncomfortable bed. It sank into the middle and the pillows felt like concrete. Not a very restful stay!

I always stay at the vic

I always stay at the Vic. Have for umteen years.

Your car is parked for you then a quick book in and your set.

Great Breakfast. Great Bar. Great Meals.

It's great to see stuff there from the 'old days' like letter drop chutes etc.

A fancy new hotel does not have the sort of feeling that this place has. It seems the place puts guests and staff in a good mood. I have stayed at fancy new ones and everyone seems so cold - staff and guests

Close to everything.

Clean comfortable and GREAT staff!

We start our chat room meets here! lol

Ask anything and the GREAT staff help in what ever way they can.

I have stayed here with many friends that came from Over-the-Seas and they loved it as well.

One thing I wish for is that their coffee cups were MUGS!! ya need it after a hard day/night :)

You hear that? management Coffee MUGS!

thank you moni-yol

Victoria, great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
Victoria Hotel was in an excellent location for shopping, sightseeing etc. Facilities adequate, our room still a bit dated after renovations but clean. Room facing Lt Collins was very noisy in mornings due to construction across the road, and at night with late night revellers. Internet cafe onsite was good however unable to connect to MSN after paying for 1 hour access - no technical help staff avail. All in all, would stay there again and emphasise a quiet room as request for quiet room went unheeded.

Excellent value

Stayed at The Victoria last March on a shopping trip and we were very happy with our deal which included an excellent buffet breakfast. We are staying there again in February and would recommend it to travellers that want good value for money accommodation in an excellent position.

A very pleasant surprise!

Travelling on from Sydney to Melbourne, my boyfriend and I were after some budget accomodation, and opted for The Victoria from the guide book. The prices were budget but the hotel definitely was not. The Victoria is absolutely brilliant value for money, a large hotel in a very convenient location near Melbournes central shopping area. After our genuinely budget accomodation in Sydney (dorm like accomodation) this was only a little more expensive but much more plush, so that, after lugging in our backpacks, i thought wed come to to wrong place! definitely recommended foir all visitors to melbourne who are watching their pennies but like pleasant surroundings, nice rooms, shiny bathroom, maid and porter facilities, TV, etc etc.
