April 30th, 16th installment

April 30th 16th installment Today we had our last breakfast at the beautiful Jai Mahal Palace and checked out of our palatial room. Everything here, the grounds, the entertainment, the staff, was all great. The only thing I would change would be the internet. They charge around $12 a day for wireless and the room only had one possible outlet that would charge the computer. (We are still tied to our internet and Email) We meet Rampal at 9:30 AM for the 400 km drive to Udaipur. While loading t...

May 1st 17th installment We wake up at sunrise, as we have done every morning of the trip. Unfortunately it starts to get light at 5 am so we start our day early. Breakfast in the hotel dining room is buffet style as usual. This morning I ask myself the same question as every morning-"why does every hotel serve baked beans for breakfast?" I never seen anyone eating them but all of the hotels serve this unusual breakfast food. I ask the waiter if Indian people like baked beans for breakfast. ...

May 2nd. Udaipur

May 2nd 18th installment Our second full day and last one in Udaipur, dawns warm as usual. We had another lovely buffet breakfast at the hotel and walked around a bit while we awaited Rampal's 10 AM arrival. One more thing I should say about the food here. We have had a rather consistent problem with our bellies (not just that mine is getting bigger). At first we thought it was the different bacteria but now we think that it is just the unfamiliar food. The Indian food is quite good, however...

Hi everyone - i have had a terrible time trying to send entries and may have to back track and enter more info in earlier ones now that i have a decent keyboard to type on and a computer that does not freeze up every 2 minutes so please check earlier entries for updates we are now in Udaipur which which is called the city of sunrise and is considered by many to be the more romantic city in india - it is built around 4 lakes and even has a 5 star hotel (formerly a palace) right in the middle o...

On our last night we had a late meal at the gourmet restaurant atop the palace. Including all the chefs and waiters, there may have been more employees on the roof than guests at the 10 small tables.

The hotel also provided daily boat tours and a complementary cultural program every evening. ... can be on the road - regardless of who got there first! This seems to be all that is required. I have seen a few near misses; car vs cow, rickshaw vs donkey ( I was in this rickshaw at the time and my driver was happily looking out the side when a train of little donkeys were labouring downhill with bags full of rocks on their backs. The donkey didn't bat an eyelid as we came straight for it. My driver spotted it at the last second ...

... This affords a great view but the ever present mist mutes the sunset. Apparently there are tigers in these here hills, the driver tells us, and it is unsafe after dark. I doubt this though, after I have visited the Palace later, as it seems the Maharaja's have a bit of a thing for hunting. This is evidenced in the many paintings - all in the Mewar style - that depict generations of Maharaja's shooting anything that moves. They always appear so heroic in these ...

We toured a beautiful tomb to an ancient Maharaja, circled a worn down English shopping crescent until the driver could pull in and then we went to a wonderful contemporary art gallery. We did the compulsory sit down and ...

... lot of palaces. The Palace greets me with some optimism, which further grows the more I see. An old man shows me around unlocking all of the room with each room I visit having it's own unique style & purpose. What makes this palace standout above the rest is that it has that lived in feel about it, literally, yes in some rooms it has scraggy carpets & curtains but it all contains history and originality that previous palaces I have visited ...
