Historical Traveler Reviews of The Sutton Place Hotel -- Toronto

This is a really nice Hotel

from johnalice
After reading some of the posted negative comments, we were somewhat apprehensive about staying at the Sutton Place. However, we checked in on the 3rd July and can quite honestly state that overall we had a very pleasant stay. In particular, our room (1202) was just fabulous both in facilities and decor. The check in was fast, friendly and efficient as was the check out. The bars and restaurant provided prompt service with well groomed staff taking care of your needs.

The rest of the Hotel is very clean and polished with an abundance of old world charm in its antique style decor.

We will, without doubt, make this our Hotel to stay in whilst in Toronto.

Needs Major Facelift

from bradowpc
This hotel is still decent but its glory days have come and gone, as evidenced by the wall of 80's celebrity photos in the restaurant. The hotel is in now in desperate need of major renovations. The apartments, while large, are very run down and lack amenities of the regular guest rooms. Hallway carpets are filthy. Only some rooms have internet connections. The elevators are very slow. Service, while adequate, is far from exceptional. The location, however, is excellent.

Not a 4 Star more like a 2

from srochette
I was very excited to go to Toronto and stay at a four star hotel. We figured we would be efficient and stay in an apartment that had limited maid service. On our way to our apartment on the 19th floor the hotel became less and less, dingy lighting, dark halls, etc... not a warm feeling like the lobby. Upon entering the apartment we found "flea market" type of furniture, old bathroom, old fixtures, etc... Most of all, no air conditioning. The hotel and apartments are on a central heat/ac system and only one out of three works, it's either heat, fan, or air conditioning and only the fan was on. We were quickly and professionally transferred to a regular room (with no price increase). The regular room was very nice, very european feeling, clean, and we were on the less sunny side so it was cooler. The room was a smoking room but it really wasn't bad. We never used any of the facilities or restaurant. It has a great location and is within reasonable walking distance to everything or a quick cab ride. I have been in the hotel business for about 7 years and have traveled to many places, I have stayed at better places that were rated less than thier 4 star rating. I don't think I would ever stay there again. Sorry.

Horrible!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a horrible experience: the staff is not friendly at all, the rooms are dirty, the bed unconfortable and we forgot a jacket there: they charged us $8.00 to mail it to Montreal! (process that took them 3 weeks). Dont stay there, it is not worth the money!

Terrible for the $

from A TripAdvisor Member
Boy, I expect allot more for $199/night USD. First, the water was freezing for showers; everything in the rooms is run-down and dingy; beds are hard and old; mold in bathrooms; TV's are tiny in rooms. It was a nice lobby -- but who cares about the lobby; location is OK, but I've had better for less money (Coutyard Marriott on Yonge).

Overall, avoid this place like the plague!

Sutton Place Top-Notch

My friend and I recently stayed at the Sutton Place Hotel. We loved it. The front desk staff was wonderful. Our room was beautiful right down to the plush warm robes, maid service twice a day and the chocolate on our pillow at night. The food and service in the restaraunt was perfect. We never wanted for anything. On the day of checkout, we asked if we could have some extra time and they more than accomodated us. We checked out at 1 pm and didn't have any lines. The elevator wasn't working properly so we had to do the stairs, but that is the only thing. Thanks Sutton Place.

A 70s Hotel with poor service

from HighTechTraveller
Recently stayed at the Sutton place for 2 nights. The hotel seems run down and still has 70s decor. While I stayed at an Executive room the furniture (tables etc..) was somewhat scratched and run-down. The elevators saw better days. On the other hand, I never had such poor service from the front desk staff. The service and attentiveness is comparable to that of a clerk in Motel 6. Would not stay there again until they either renovate the hotel or the staff.

Service, location, old-world elegance

from Blodeuwedd
Just stayed here for 5 nights in August 2003, and loved it. Concierges and all other staff were exceptionally friendly, cheerful, courteous, and competent. Location is fantastic...right on a major busline and subway line, plenty of cabs, safe neighborhood, lots of great restaurants and interesting sights nearby (I'd HIGHLY recommend Bistro 990 and Segovia restaurants which are basically next door; and, hop on the subway for High Park to see Shakespeare played as it ought to be, for "what you can pay"). Yes this IS an older hotel and so, some amenities won't be as glitzy as in a place that was built last year (specifically, the shower water pressure is adequate but weaker than with more modern plumbing; the in-room tables are a bit too high for comfortable laptop use, unless you can spring for a business room or choose to pay for the business center, which is only open Mon-Fri); you might see some fading or chipping wallpaper under the windows/behind the drapes; and you might overhear your neighbor's conversation if you are in a room with an adjoining door (the soundproofing is not modern)...On the other hand, the whole place is spotless, bed was new and VERY comfortable, room VERY large, in-room safe and mini-bar are standard, and the hotel has a feeling of old-world elegance that you don't get with last year's model. UNLIKE more modern hotels you can actually OPEN a window to get fresh air. PLUS on the same block you have a very good grocery store; deli/coffeeshop; dry cleaners; and florist, in addition to the excellent dining mentioned above. I also wound up at Sutton Place by booking via Priceline at $85 a night, and felt like Eloise at the Plaza...IMHO it was a fantastic deal.

Classy

from wolfden
We just stayed at the Sutton and I have to agree with the previous review that it was in need of repair. It's a very classy hotel but I also could hear street noise. The rooms were quite large and very well decorated. The bed was comfortable and the hotel staff were very friendly. You may be able to get a cheap rate at this 4 star hotel, but that's the only deal you will get there. The food and drink prices were out of this world and nothing special.

OK

from A TripAdvisor Member
This place needs to be renovated. The rooms are big but tatty. I was on the 11th floor and could hear street noise.I got my room on Priceline for USD$80 per night and that was probably slightly too much. The lobby is nice and the bar is ok too but the pictures of the 80s soap stars are a little weird.
