Away from Leicester early in search of some drinkable coffee. The hotel was quite good but only brewed mud. Drove through downtown Leicester but we didn't get the memo that it was evacuation Sunday and nothing was open and no one was there.
Onward, and still caffeine deprived, to Kirby Muxloe Castle which looked a good ruin to start the …
Rich: We left this morning to head back up toward Scotland for new years. Decided to go a bit of the way and have a look at some castles etc on the way. Sussed out some things to see in the midland and decided to stay in Derby.
First stop was Bolsover Castle, which looks stunning... if it's not foggy with 50m visibility. Turns out it's also …
I spent 8 hours walking around the city killing time waiting for Rebs to finish work. I feel as though I now know Derby quite well. At least I've finally finished my Christmas shopping. I found a great greasy spoon cafe for breakfast. Porter's Pantry on The Strand does full English breakfast for £2.95 and a mug of tea comes with the tea bag still …
... We visited the Calvary Pentecostal Church, and quickly renamed it the Tambourine Church. We counted 8 tambourines out of a congregation of about 25. The pastor had a small yellow one with a single row of jingles. Others had more elaborate ones, and the lady next to Hazel had a red one with an extra ring of double jingles and she played it twice as fast as everyone else. After the first two songs, Hazel was asking James about moving a few rows back, but thankfully ...
... Britain. 1100s. It was built against the cliff the castle was on and it had rooms cut into the rock. Amazing. The castle was good too. Only parts of the gatehouse was medieval but the building on the top - a 1700s building for the very rich - was great. It is now a museum. You can hire the place for parties and weddings etc, so I'm thinking of my 60th birthday! We travelled back to pick up Dave and headed to ...

Historical Traveler Reviews The Stuart Hotel Derby
...their hobby is attempting to run this joke of a hotel in Derby.
Stayed here recently and was impressed the modern decor of the place. when i went to check in i was dissapointed that my reservation was not in the system. the receptionist didnt seem to care and no apology was offered, however i can let that go she was 'busy' as she pointed out to me!! there was no offer of luggage assistance anddirections to my room were sketchy. got to my room and was initailly disapointed about the size. the facities were however good, the rooms had been given alot of thought. The bar was good and table service was a nice touch. went into the restuarant which was very modern. The menu was average, but i let it go. service was good, friendly but not over familiar. Atmosphere was non existent, please change the music!!!!
Brilliant stay at nice designer hotel
i enjoyed my stay at the hotel and thought it was very nice. I thought I should mention this after seing all the reviews below.Good food and nicely decorated - reminded me of a hotel I stayed in rome recently, modern, clean up to date and fresh.
i have made a reservation through a company i wish not to name.it has been advertised as a 4 star hotel but i wouldnt give it a one star.i think that they are breaking the law because they advertise as a 4 star hotel but it is not.i have stayed in one of the rooms and i had no toilet paper, no bath towels and no warm water. The heating system did not work so the room was freezing, i honestly thought i was sleeping outside.i paid ?180.00 for this dump.I went to the liquid bar and the service was disgusting. The blonde barmaid was very rude so i had a drink and then went to the xs restaurant. The restaurant was not that busy and i expected a better service. The food was nice and i think the chefs are working for the wrong company because they should be working at a better place then this dump.
Not four star standard
never stay at this hotel it is most definitely the worst hotel and service i have ever encountered !when we arrived at the hotel it was the manager that checked us in and on first impressions i was quite pleased as it looked exactly as i was expecting . how wrong can you be ! room on ground floor was unfinished ,stains on walls ,room cold, dirty bedding, shower leaking ,room not cleaned properly ,outside room unsafe wires hanging down from ceiling ,open bare staircase, piles of laundry on floor etc, etc, could go on forever! complained to manager who offered no explanation or help to which we checked out after one night even though we had already paid for two and no refund as of yet!!!
We stayed over the Valentines weekend. The hotel looked like it was in the last stages of a total referb. The room was very comfortable as was the rest of the hotel. The meals were very good and the staff were helpful and friendly. In fact I can not find fault with the hotel at all.
This hotel was much hyped as a top class venue but the results were disappointing. I found that the first floor was still a building site.
This place was a dump. I even got DCC health and safety round the next day. No running water in the room. The restaurant was flooded the room a suana ( not big enough to swing a cat) boiling hot up 2 flights of stairs with builder rubble and a dreadful duputy manager never ever go to this hotel
Unforgettable but for the wrong reasons
No offer of assistance up 2 flights of stairs with heavy suitcase.
Booked a double room but was given a single. The double room that I was moved to had a leaky radiator and although I informed the management they did not have it mended during the week I stayed. Breakfast took over half an hour to arrive one morning although the restuarant was not even a quarter full. I am also in disputed over the bill as they charged both myself and my company and took money without my authorisation. The decor in the refurbished areas is fantastic but it is a pity that the service didn't match. I would never revisit
