First time....would go back for right price.
Stayed June 20th to 25th and would stay again for right price. Agree with other posters that soundproofing is terrible. could hear next door neighbors like they were in room with us. Could also hear people out on balcony with door shut. Room nice size and in good condition. balcony nice size with 2 chairs but a table would fit. Had nice set of toiletries and housekeeping was good. There is a full sized ironing board and iron. Hairdryer one of those little Conair 1600 attached to wall. We had a sink, dorm sized fridge, microwave oven, and cabinets at entrance. TV is 25 inch with good number of channels to choose from including Disney and HBO. It is true that sheets do not fit bed and come off with any type of movement. Air conditioning very loud but works efficiently. Had room 913 which was dead center middle with very nice view of ocean. Food at downstairs coffee shop way too expensive with small milk $2.50 so would not shop there. Had breakfast buffet which had good variety for $8.99 per adult but service not very good. If having to pay rack rate, I would stay at Holiday Inn Suites on 17th street which have comparable rack rates but much nicer facility. We toured a room while in town and much much nicer. But would stay at Grand again if received $139 rate again. Any questions, let me know.
Proceed With Caution
The Grand Hotel has the potential to be a quality property, however they are some major problems that need to be addressed before I would ever stay here again.
The front desk staff is very polite, except for the managers themselves. The property is gorgeous, the rooms are spacious and it is very nice having the balcony,microwave and refrigerator. Now the negative-
This hotel does not accept your debit card for payment. Apparently "their system inadvertanly double charges debit cards." Interesting-Could it be that they just do not want to accept debit cards? The hospitatlity business is about convenience to the guest,not what is convenient for the hotel.
Go with a major credit card or cash-the preferred method because there isn't any way to dispute charges or get your money back if you are not satisfied.
There is absolutley NO soundproofing at this property. If you are staying in a room with someone above you, you will hear their sliding glass door EVERY time they open and close it. It sounds like rumbling thunder and it will wake you from a sound sleep. You will also hear the bathroom activity of your neighbors throughout your stay. If you do not need an adjoining room,insist on being put in a room without the connecting door otherwise it wil be as if the other family is in your room with you.
The sheets do not fit the beds, so if you are a restless sleeper plan on waking up entwined in your sheets and mattress pad with your head resting on your bare mattress.
Housekeeping is so-so. I could tell that the bathroom was not cleaned and the floor was not vacuumed.
During our stay the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night. This apparently is a problem for this hotel ,as other guests that we were standing with said that the same thing happened two nights earlier.
If you can get a good rate and are staying for just a few nights I would say go for it, but by all means do not spend $200.00 for what would surely be a waste of your hard earned vacation dollars. The Holiday Inn on 17th is beautiful and well maintained and provides first class service for around the same on season price.
We love the Grand
My mother, 2 sister-n-laws and myself spend a long weekend in Ocean City every year. I got elected to pick the hotel and make the arrangements and after researching for about 2 weeks, I chose The Grand. We stayed the last weekend of June. We had excellent service.
The room was spotless and kept that way our entire stay. All of the staff was more than helpful and very friendly. The outside pool was great with excellent staff as well. While it is a bit pricey, we look forward to it all year and we will definately go back.
Spend your money wisely
I see that most of these reviews are fom those who stayed off-season.If you stay here in-season when prices are at there highest you will find service at it's lowest.Dirty rooms,worst cleaning staff I have ever seen.Rooms not cleaned on some days until 5 pm,even if you request an early cleaning.Most days we vacuumed ourselves and switched out our dirty towels.They never-ever cleaned the shower.The balcony door was broken and the screen was missing,glad my children are grown or would not have been able to keep door open.Had 1 balcony chair for a room that sleeps 4.Asked for chairs 3 times,finally went and got our own.Buffet at restaurant was terrible and employees hovered around to see what would be left for them.There was only one other party in there when we arrived, yet they sat us in front of the only broken window.The waitress spent the entire time sitting at the other party's table,I guess it was her friends, as their bill showed up on my credit card statement.I thought it was a bit funny when she took my credit card a 2nd time ,saying the first time it didn't go through.Indoor pool area always dirty.Told staff there was dirty diaper floating in pool, but 4 hours later there it was.Several pieces of gym equipment broken,if you really feel like working out next to a pool table and a noisy arcade.The bartender was rude and obnoxious and used profanity in every sentence complaining how the tourists are ruining O.C. Like it's my fault at 40 years old he is still slinging beers after riding his bicycle to work.Our view overlooking the outdoor promenade was littered with broken tiles,tar buckets and the like,as if the construction crew walked out last year never to return.Try taking your luggage to your room on carts with flat tires,again brought it to their attention but they never got repaired.O.C. is a beautiful place and there are many ways to spend your hard earned money.Don't waste it here.
I have stayed at this hotel three times (the last time was the first weekend of October 2003) and find myself being more impressed with each stay. You can't beat the location - steps to the beach and boardwalk from the lobby. The rooms are spacious, all face the ocean and are equipped with a microwave and refrigerator. I found out the last time we stayed there that all the rooms on the top floor have king size beds with jacuzzi tubs (I had the pleasure of staying in one). I have already made reservations to stay there again.
Very nice hotel
Beautiful clean hotel. We stayed Oct.31 weekend. Room is very clean and spacious. Clean bathroom and plenty of towels and free mouthwash and shower cap, free newspaper every morning etc. New ref. micro. and coffee maker and clean wet bar. Everythings new. Huge balcony and wonderful ocean. Boardwalk is only one step away from the hotel. Only $69 per night!!! One minus is heating system is bit noise. But works well, warm and comfortable room. This hotel is 2 star, But deserved 3 star, why not?! I already booked this Turkey holiday weekend. My daughter can't wait come back to OC Grand hotel. Believe me, you will loved this hotel with that price. Thank you
Couldn't be beat!!!
The Grand was Grand! My husband and I stayed there Tuesday through Thursday last week (until the hurricane came and we had to leave :( We loved the Grand. We got a 9th floor ocean front room (and when they say ocean front they mean it!!!!) The room was nice, 2 queens, a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. The balcony was huge! we could look right down th the boardwalk below. We did not eat at the hotel so I cannot comment on that. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. All this for $69/a night! (fall special). It is not the Ritz, but nowhere in Ocean City is, and it shouldn't be expected. We are making our reservations for next year already!
Not so Hot
We founf this hotel to be a big dissapoinment. Stayed there in 8/2002.
Hotel in general was dirty, carpets, windows, our bathtub had hair in it and sheets were dirty. No one would listen to our concerns. Biggest suprise, it was brand new!!!!
The Grand is an ideal spot for a family. The rooms are large with an efficiency area that allows you to keep snacks, drinks, and microwave popcorn handy. The staff was friendly and the hotel clean. The breakfast buffet was ok, but we did better to walk down the boardwalk to a small cafe for half the price. There are several rests. within walking distance. Phillips was good but avoid the italian place visible from the pool deck. You can walk to putt putt golf and a candy store.
Bike rentals are available one block down. The beach at 21st street is wide and without a lot of high rise condos close by, you won't feel too cramped. For a quick getaway, I would go to the Grand.
We Like It!
My spouse is working in Ocean City for two months. Company put him in The Grand. The kids and I visit on weekends. The Grand is very nice, new and clean. It's only January so it's cold but ocean and bay views are spectacular. Even 8" of snow on the beach last weekend. Game room, lounge, gift shop, guest laundry room and indoor pool were used. Nice. Free newspapers, fast elevators, great water views from all floors and every room. Did I mention the great water views. Large balconies, lots drawer space, way lots kitchenette cabinetry. And clean, clean, clean. Don't think Ocean City itself is worth any of the big hotel summer rates but this is a nice place. Try it in the winter before it gets too pricey!
