    ... Walter Scott to be the finest stone town in England, has houses built in 17th and 18th century, 5 medieval parish churches, etc. Pity weather didn't permit photography. We went to the market, which is reputed to be good, for a few items but we think the Traders would have had an ordinary day. The first castle in Thetford, a probable 11th century Norman ringwork called Red Castle, was replaced in the 12th century by a much larger motte and bailey castle on the other side of the town. This new castle was largely destroyed in 1173 by Henry II, although the huge motte, the second largest man-made mound in England, remained intact.     ... recently upgraded Travelodges" since arriving in the UK, we decide to give it a go .... suffice to say, NEVER AGAIN. A quick walk around Peterborough (nothing to see here) in search of what we know will be one of our last Guinness Steak Pies. Success at O'Neill's - a local Irish pub, and then back to our hotel to deal with emails and other work that we have been happily neglecting since we left Edinburgh.

    ... We visited the church, which looks lively with Alpha courses, home groups, drop-in projects and so on. We had some refreshments in a coffee shop before stocking up at the Co-op and heading back to the boat. We realised that we no longer had our “First Mate” guide which shows all the shops, doctors, etc. James retraced our steps and found it in the church, next to the visitors book where he must have left it.
