Historical Traveler Reviews of The St. Anthony - A Wyndham Historic Hotel San Antonio
Indifferent and depressing
from A TripAdvisor Member
Beautiful, albeit somewhat shopworn lobby. Indifferent service, distracted clerks at the desk and no concierge. Room did indeed have a four poster bed in it, but the room was very small, dank and depressing. The walls are thin and one gets serenaded with the sounds from adjoining bathrooms, passersby in the hall, and the music that blasts from the sky deck. The bathroom was old, marginally functional and difficult for one smallish person to maneuver in. Would not stay here again.
Beautiful hotel, terrible service
from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel itself is beautiful but this alone cannot make up for the lack of service given to guests. Don't expect a nice greeting at the front desk when you arrive and don't expect to receive any service at all if you decide to visit the hotel restaurant. In fact, I recommend avoiding the restaurant altogether. Also, the food is subpar, cold, and quite pricey. Oh, and make sure you bring lots of cash for the parking.
They charge their guests an arm and a leg just to park at their hotel during your stay. I also recommend bringing earplugs as the walls in the rooms are old and very thin.
Pleasant ambiance & great location

We stayed at the St. Anthony in April 2003 during Fiesta Week as we found an internet special price at the last minute. It is a short walk to the Riverwalk and Alamo and close to the bus stop. Our room was small with a small closet and quaint bathroom, but the king bed was comfortable and our window overlooked a park. Our friends had a double room with two bathrooms, two beds, two closets and real dressers. The Wyndam is recreating the original feel of a once grand hotel and we had an enjoyable stay. The staff was friendly and accomodating. We loved San Antonio and will be back to visit again.
Very Impressive ! THE BEST!

Beautiful hotel! Walking distance to the Riverwalk. Not only did I find nicely appointed, immaculate rooms with beautiful furniture. . . I found THE BEST personal service I have ever experienced! I felt like a celebrity during my stay. The staff referred to me by name (even when they didn't have any paperwork in front of them) which is pretty impressive for a large hotel that was VERY busy while I was there! The best evidence of quality was the attention to detail that I experienced. . . the concierge volunteered to call a taxi for my airport run, and he selected the best cab driver I have ever had (small thing - but it enhanced my stay); MEN: you MUST get a shoe shine - the man at St. Anthony's is from the old school and he is amazing - again, a small thing, but it made my day for some high profile business meetings! The personal service puts this hotel at the top of my list in San Antonio! It is actually easy for hotels to buy pretty furniture.
The REAL proof of quality is in their daily attention to the needs of the customer! I'll be back!
Beautiful hotel - Great price! July 2003

In the past, we have stayed in many hotels in San Antonio - but now we always stay at the St. Anthony. Our rooms surpass excellent in the things that matter most to us - cleanliness and a good shower (big rooms). The price of this motel is very inexpensive compared to hotels in its class -we have paid anywhere from $75 a night to $100 a night here. If you sign up for their hotel program on their website, you also get a complementary snack and beverage in your room upon arrival. The hotel is right by the riverwalk - convenient without the noise. The lobby is beautiful and immaculant. Dining in the Madrid room is quiet and the food is great. (The breakfast buffet is pricey, even for kids, but very good.) Whatever you do, don't miss their Sunday brunch - fabulous!!!! ($26, but worth it!) My only complaint is that the pool area and restrooms are sometimes dirty and their fitness room has MUCH to be desired.
Wonderful Hotel Loved it

My family vacationed to San Antonio and stayed at the St. Anthony hotel. It was a wonderful hotel. We loved it. The only thing we didnt like was the carpet in the hallways. The ends of the carpet were held together with duct tape, it looked very trashy. Another thing that I didnt like was the fact that you could hear people in the rooms next to you, one night while we were trying to sleep, a couple next door were "discussing some buisness" if you know what I mean and were very very loud about it. Those are the only two problems with the hotel. The rooms were very charming the big four poster bed, the desk and the beautiful armoire. If we ever go to San Antonio again we will definately want to stay there again.
Wow, what an excellent surprise!

After reading some mediocre reviews, I was a bit apprehensive about this stay, but, oh my goodness! We had such a great room, huge....the bathroom and changing room were about 20 square feet alone. The staff were all very courteous. I would highly recommend the St. Anthony, with fine ambiance, fantastic location and nicer than expected rooms. And all of this for $69 a night! Unbelievable!
Beautiful hotel - but we had a bad housekeeping experience!
from A TripAdvisor Member
The St. Anthony has a BEAUTIFUL lobby, and our room was gorgeous as well. There was a big four-poster bed and old-fashioned fixtures in the large bathroom. However, upon arrival, our shower had not been cleaned (stray hair & a bar of soap remained....), the ice bucket had melted ice in it, and the carpet obviously hadn't been swept in a long time. It took three calls and two visits from housekeeping over the course of an hour to get these problems fixed. On the following days, we didn't feel like the room was fully cleaned, either.... for example, I don't know that the bathroom floor was hardly cleaned while we were there. A beautiful, comfortable hotel - they just have some issues w/housekeeping. Hopefully ours was an isolated incident. Also, pay $2 extra to valet park. There is a nicely maintained park across the street from the hotel that you have to walk past to get to the self-park lot, and there seem to be a lot of homeless people who stay there, including one man we saw take his pants off.... just seemed to be some safety issues at night, although everything was well lit and the lot had good security.
Small rooms & no concierge
from ABC80
Room was too small. Chest of drawers was so close to end of bed that you couldn't open drawer more than 5 inches. Wallpaper needs to be changed. Not a modern bathroom. I can't stand when a hotel uses bellmen to be concierges at the same time. Hotel should be reduced to 2 stars because there was no concierge the weekend we were there. Also, pool isn't big enough to swim in, 12'x12' at max.

My husband and I used hotwire.com and ended up at the St. Anthony. It was wonderful! The rooms were cute and reminded me of staying at my grandmas. There was a four poster bed, a real dresser and huge closet. The hotel had a really nice, heated pool on its roof with a jacuzzi. We were able to swim comfortably even at New Years! The location couldn't be better. We were a very short walk to the Riverwalk and Alamo. We couldn't believe the great deal we got. I just booked the same hotel for my mom and I via hotwire.com. I got an even better price this time and can't wait to stay there again. The only complaint I have is the parking. The hotel has its own lot, but it is $13-$15 per night. There is another lot across the street that is a bit cheaper$9-$10. But I would either go without a car or look for a lot nearby. Otherwise, a great place!
