Historical Traveler Reviews of The Shoreham Hotel New York City

Nightmare

from terri77
Words can not fully express how horrible my experience has been. The management is a outrageous, customer service and staff rude, and prices inflated for what you expect. They act as if they're doing you a favor by staying at their overpriced hotel. Never, ever again. Run, don't walk, away from this hotel. There are infinitely better places to stay.

It stinks!!!!!

When I saw the hotel's website, it looked nice along with capuccino machine and other small perks. However, when I got there, I was so dissapointed. The room was so tiny and smelly. The bathroom was dirty and needed repair. They advertised at their website that we would receive a bathrobe and bottle water, which in fact, we didn't get any of those. I would not come back to this hotel. I can find a better hotel in NY with the price I paid.

She's aging badly!

Not a great hotel, one of the elevators was out which left a tiny elevator to handle 11 floors. Maybe 3 people could fit into it, so lines were long.

In my room, the a/c, fridge and stereo all were broken when I arrived.

The best replacement a/c unit (it was 97 in NYC that weekend) leaked water profusely over the floor so I constantly had to get new towels to keep the water loss at a minimum. The new a/c unit was also so loud, it sounded like a machine gun, it was very difficult to sleep at night.

The concierge desk was never staffed. I asked for assistance one time from a front desk staffer who completely blew a fairly simple subway question.

I did not receive housekeeping one day, and by the time I returned theh housekeepers were gone for the day.

The timed delivery breakfast for 7:00 to 7:15AM showed up at 7:33AM, after I left (they left a voice mail stating they were there). They originally tried to charge me for it, even though they were 18 minutes late!

I could feel the springs of the bed through the sheets and the bed was bowed in the center, my head and feet were higher than my torso.

Not a great place in my opinion, hopefully others have better luck.

Many other, much nicer places to stay in NYC.

Decent

Location is great - lots of shopping nearby. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Dogs allowed- a plus for us. Rooms were clean with understated decor. But, somehow, it just wasn't very impressive. Splurged on a suite and was happy enough with sq footage, but it wasn't anything special. The place has an air of claustrophobia to it. Are the ceilings perhaps low? Will continue to explore the many other options NYC has to offer before staying here again.

Shoreham was a great deal!!

My mother and I stayed at the Shoreham last year in October and absolutely loved it. The location was great (subway around the corner) quiet street, great little restaurants around (of course) and great rate to boot. Loved the modern decor and trance music in lobby. Yes the rooms are small BUT COME ON, THIS IS NY!! IF YOU EXPECTED THE ROOMS TO BE LARGE, YOU'RE A LITTLE OUT OF IT. Same deal in SF, Paris, etc...I usually stay at an Ian Schrager prop but didn't want to spend the money this time, Shoreham was a nice surprise.

I Dig The Shoreham!

People that work at the Shoreham were great...very laid-back....no mid-town neuroses here, just free to be... so easy-going...room was fine...nice linens, very clean, can't beat the price... was lucky that way...100 bucks (a last minute cancelation, or something ) I probably won't see that kind of pricing again, but, I will go back again regardless of the cost, if only for the self-serve cappucino machine in the understated lounge area.

Excellent in Every Way

A colleague and I stayed 5 nights at the Shoreham while attending a conference in March and found it exceptional in its location, service, amenities, and overall comfort. The rooms ARE small, especially with a queen-sized bed, the water pressure in the shower is weak, and the hotel sign really ought to be lit for easier locating, but those were the only negatives. All of the staff were not only cordial and helpful, but went out of their way to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. At checkin, they explained every amenity the hotel had to offer--which included free videos and a free cappucino/coffee area. Our room had a vcr, cd player, safe, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, and very nice bath products--everything we could need for a short stay. We had no trouble getting a taxi and there are at least two subways within a short two block walk. One major plus for us was the amount of lighting in the room, which can be a problem in even the best hotels; there were overhead lights on the ceiling, above the bed, and along one wall, as well as individual table lamps on both sides of the bed. For someone who likes her room brightly lit and has a lot of evening ready to do, this was wonderful! We've stayed in the Marriot Marquis and the New York Hilton, and, while they are also top-notch, the Shoreham provides a quieter environment and friendlier, more personal service. We would definately stay there again.

OK

Room was very small. Strange location on side street. Was very difficult to get a taxi. Modern.

Shoreham Hotel New York, definitely will return!

We stayed at the Shoreham the weekend before Christmas for the first time and loved it. Rooms are very cozy; excellent linens and down comforter. Loved the bathrooms with Aveda products and the complimentary cappucino machine in the sitting area behind the lobby. Great breakfast in their restaurant. Free internet access. Only downside is, that hotel is not near avery good subway line; you ahve to change trains a lot.

Shoreham Hotel - Scrooge Lives Here!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My boyfriend and I planned to spend Christmas Day in New York this year (Dec 25, 2002) and I just returned from the Shoreham Hotel. My first impressions were great, being greeted by a glass of Champage when you enter the hotel! Don't be fooled, I ended up Christmas night trying to stay warm by jumping in bed (boyfriend of course trying to help:)) but we were both freezing. He called maintenance only to find at 11:00pm we had to change rooms (once again - our heating in the room was broken). Our room had already been changed when we first checked in.

End result, not enough towels in our new room, (only 1.5) shower clogged with something (goodness knows what HAIR!!??... a gremlin? Gizmo??) (we asked for maintenane and it was never fixed) reading light broken in the room, run out of tissue paper (only used four sheets). The list of problems goes on. He spoke to the manager to find out that the hotel had changed hands at least twice in the past few years and is now under new management. Needless to stay I would NEVER stay there again. They appear to be having financial problems as they are skimping on the smallest stuff - tissue paper, etc... hmmmmmmmm strange but true - I think SCROOGE lives here... how cheap can one get??

Anyone staying there should not expect too much as long as they have these problem. I LOVE New York... but will stay away from that place.
