Raki Raki Town

Sunday, November 26, 2006 We're at the gracefully aging Rakiraki Hotel. The rooms are nice at $60 Fijian with a fan and private bath and shower. More importantly they have an expansive patio with a couple shelters and an excellent pool which we are right now making use of. Early this morning we took the Sunbeam express bus out of Savu. We traveled the Kings Highway into the northern highlands of the interior of Viti Levu. This is the main island of Fiji and the only one we plan to visit while...

The Camper Crash and other exciting adventures.

... of the train, I could only consider it a huge disappointment. The views were nothing compared to some we had seen previously in New Zealand, and the train itself was pretty run down. By this point however I had decided to fly to Sydney the next day to surprise my Irish friends, so was in pretty high spirits regardless.<br> We returned to Christchurch, and went straight away to the Escape office, where they very kindly paid for all our accomodation and ...

... at dinner time. There is a buffet - steak and seafood or a la carte menu, we obviously opt for the a la carte but still there are only two vegetarian options on the whole menu. Neither meal is good and the portions are very small, it's not cheap either :( As the days progress we spent our time swimming, snorkelling, sunbathing - the only thing you can do here is relax, so that's what we do. Craig uses the ...

Bounty Island

Fiji is beautiful and full of lovely friendly people. On the islands, the food and accomodation is very basic and unpretentious. We met so many people here in a brief chill out week after the Kalalua Trail in Hawaii. We were surprised to see so many similarities in Fiji to home, the food for one is surprisingly similar ...

A little bit (a lot of bit) of paradise!!!

... shoulder. It apparently didn't want to leave my shoulder. Of course odd sounds were coming out of my mouth, like "UH!", "OOOOH!", "AHHHH!" as I tried to get it to move, flailing my arms and trying to smack it away. FINALLY, what seemed like an eternity (but probably only 2 seconds) the attacking beetle fell off my shoulder and landed on the bed. Meanwhile, what was Brandt doing during my moment of horror? I'm surprised he didn't pee the bed. (You ...

Fiji Experience - Day 3

... to wonder as to the extent of their poverty back home) but rather being 'treated' to an impromptu French lesson by French-Guy-Who-Videos-Everything who seemed completely oblivious to the fact that he was interrupting their exam! After our school visit, our next stop was a distinctly uninviting-looking river for water games and 'bili-bili' rafting. Wading waist-deep in the muddy river, we were split first into two teams to play a fun game of water-based American football ...

... into the town of Raki Raki, where we were to rendez-vous with Ana, (our Ravi Ravi friend and liason). By day three of our trip we had already gone more than half-way around the island on the Akbar Express or maybe it was the Lautoka Express. Either way, it was by bus, a very loud transmissioned, open-air sort of bus. Ana and her three children, Mereleki age 13, Leno 9, and little Louisa, 2, hosted us during our stay in ...
