Spreading Wisdom and Ignorance

I hate to say it, but I think India is the land of wrong information. The morning newspapers were full of articles about the festival of Holi, or the festival of Colors, but we couldn't find out whether it was that day, or they were reporting from the day before. Even at the front desk of our hotel, we would get different (and always confident) answers about whether it was happening or had already happened. Or where we might look to see it. Our primary activity this day was for me to speak t...

Surviving Travelers Fly to Chennai (Madras)

We flew back to India on this day, and we wished we'd been able to spend more time in Sri Lanka. The beach at Unawatuna was the most relaxing place we went, and we loved seeing the more tropical inland parts of the island, including rubber plantations and tea plantations, and buying amazing fruits and nuts from the side of the road. We had great food everywhere we went, and really liked the Sri Lankan people we met. Unfortunately, even on the day we left there was a suicide bomber at a mosqu...

Day one: settling in

I had been in the air for almost ten total hours when my seat neighbor remarked, "We're almost there." The ten hours was only the cumulative flying time; that didn't include the four hours waiting in Atlanta, nor the nearly two hours in Nashville. I told her that it was all relative. My trip was barely halfway over, with a ten hour flight to Chennai, India waiting for me. It isn't easy to pass the time on a long-distance flight. The body can only tolerate so much boredom before it shuts down....

Namaste!

... dust, mud, poop, and hotness….I then proceeded to have a bird poop on my hand. There wasn’t enough hand sanitizer to make me feel clean ever again. A sleeper train came by and there were people hanging out the windows and it looked very sketch. Our tour guide assured us not to worry-that wasn’t our train. We all were so relieved…until our train came and it was identical to the sketchy train we had just seen. We walked into the train very ...

Gutted to be leaving Incredible India!

... buildings with palaces, homes & tombs dotted all around. As an important centre of Islamic culture, it’s south India’s version of Delhi, Agra & Fatepuhr Sikri’s Muslim splendour of the Mughals, with a fair proportion of the population Muslim. Its population exceeds Britain with 76m, but its abundance of rare gems and minerals (the Koh-i-Noor diamond comes from here) provided the nizrams (viceroys installed by the Mughals) with ...

Hairy Caterpillar Hives For My Birthday

... the quality of the workmanship. The next day i was ready to do business with him, i was up for buying 20 pairs to courier home for business but he was closed for the day and i felt a little sorry for him that he had lost the sale but i had to leave that night. Bugger. Last night i didn't sleep until i played my favourite track that i call Merlin's Magic Reiki Chakra Healing session on the ipod. I discovered that nobody is on holidays in this seaside ...

Relaxing in Mamallapuram

... you look, or chat without any of the usual sales pressure you would normally get. I got a dress made for me, from choosing the material to having a final fitting took around 20 hours. It's very exciting, as I don't wear dresses very often; although it is very casual, I still feel quite dressed up in it, so now will have to find an occasion to wear it. And shoes, and accessories! I managed to do a little sightseeing ...

... buying a single ticket. And no, apparently you don't have to be with 3 people to use the ticket :) Luckily Claudia knows her way around German trains so we can get to Frankfurt Airport in two relatively easy connections. Even with all the delays we arrive earlier than thought {since we took a different train than expected> We are flying Lufthansa. We also checked prices for other companies and other airports ...

India!!!

... at one point, which were a type of cucumber, and pretty tasty. I ate one, even though we had been warned not to eat vegetables unless you can peel or wash them, because the pesticides they use aren't safe or something. However I basically ignored this warning because I wanted to try the cucumber, and I figured if Indian people can eat the food than I have a pretty good chance of being okay (which as far as I know I am!) and they did wash them in a bucket of water before they gave ...
