... river takes us under the M25 and soon we find ourselves at Bell Weir Lock - built in 1817 and named after its keeper and ferryman, Charlie Bell. It's pretty enough but much like all the other locks. We continue on along the grassy path which is very wet and rather soft following yesterday's downpours. This brings us to Runnymede. It was somewhere here (no-one knows exactly) that wicked King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215...although it's said ...

... which allowed the kids to explore the massive kitchens where meals for 600 people were regularly prepared, and the dining halls where quirky facts about the era were printed into the tablecloths. We even got photo-bombed by an usher!

We left as the gates were about to close, the kids debating whether they had preferred this Palace or Buckingham. In the end the consensus was whilst it was nice to visit, they wouldn't actually like to live at either.

... Gandspette (50.81924 2.17753) is 25 miles southeast from Calais toward St Omer. It was described as a 'spacious family run site, with a swimming pool and playground'. Chateau or ‘Shat Owe’ as it’s pronounced roughly translates into ‘big old house’ or ‘chocolate bread’, I can’t recall which. We registered and received a warm welcome. It rained during the night which was to set the tone for the next 10 days. ...
