On the way from Chittagong to Dhaka, on the outskirts of Chittagong are a few miles of beach where they break up ships. There are lots of roadside stalls where you can buy old ships parts and components. It is hazardous work mainly done manually under disregard of basic safety for the people working there and for the environment. Sewage, oil, acid are all spilling into the ocean, onto the beach and the roadside.
Chittagong, Bangladesh janrostkowskiMay 14, 2009 Day trip from Dhaka to Chittagong: You need to get up early (Left at 5:00 am) and a focussed driver. It took about 6 hours to get there and 6 hours to get back - long day. Once you are out of the cities it is not too bad... Road fairly good, too. Once you get to the port area be prepared for some "in your face" poverty: Naked children, yes barefoot, going through garbage heaps, lots of dirt, not pretty!
Chittagong, Bangladesh janrostkowski... and thickly wooded mountains on the left. there is a bunker smack dab in the middle of the fairway right at the bend of the dogleg. i had never seen such a bunker before in my life. is this legal? can they put a bunker in the MIDDLE of the fairway? i don't drive far enough to get there anyway so why am i *****ing? my second shot sailed over that stupid bunker and landed on the right side of the fairway along the edge of the forest in a drainage gutter. my caddy was very ...
Chittagong, Bangladesh soidog... after dark, the concierge knocked on my door. his name was jahangir. i asked for beer and dinner and he quickly and fluidly obliged. he even brought me a battery powered light as the electric power supply in this part of the world is always only for a while. i had a really great dinner of curried lamb and rice with tiger beer and even had reason to use the flashlight before dozing off to dream about birdies yet to be.
Chittagong, Bangladesh soidog... is an optimal level of work at which workers are most productive. if there is too much work they can't keep up and they lose productivity. if there is too little work, workers tend to goof off and lose productivity that way. on my flight the staff were too busy partying and gossiping to realize that they actually had one guy on the flight. when i finally did get my dinner, it was ice cold but i was hungry so i ate it. there was no beer or wine or alcohol of any kind so ...
Chittagong, Bangladesh soidog... were going wild, thinking that another upset like Cardiff was coming along. But this was not to be, ass these two brought home the team and we won the game. Gilchrist picked up Man of the Match for his performance, and with that, that was the cricket all over for Chittagong. Tomorrow we will be leaving, as we need to get back to Dhaka as we have to go visit the Indian Consulate again for another visa. **** knows why, but maybe, yes, maybe, I am a glutton for punishment
Chittagong, Bangladesh uncle_davros... with bayonets and whacking sticks or pistols, there are also beige shirt and trouser police but I haven't figured out their function. It seemed that the entire Bangladeshi police and armed forces just happened to be stationed at the cricket ground on the days of the cricket. How coincidental. What luck, even. We ended up chatting to a huge bunch of young guys, all aged about 21. Well, most of them were talking to me as everyone else was watching the cricket. It's a bit like ...
Chittagong, Bangladesh lucinate... we don't use them frequently. Unfortunately, Mr & Mrs R's much cherished weekends away watching The Blues lose is usually accompained by a disastrous and grossly over-priced journey in one direction or another. (Ms Heenan/Mr Branson - sort it out!) Thus ends another of Mr & Mrs R's pointless lists. We need to think of another one for next time. Any suggestions gratefully received. SHABASH DANGLABESH! We are back in the crazy crazy country that is Bangladesh. In our ...

Chittagong City, Chittagong, Bangladesh mrandmrsrontour... better of sitting on the concrete steps under flimsy tarpaulin. And the headline in the local daily newspaper (see title of this e-mail) was the final straw. So, we returned to the Club House to see England wrap up the game in double-quick super time. We are now in Chittagong - in the south-east of the country - close to the Burmese border. Day 1 of the second test has just finished, but that's a story for another e-mail. Suffice to say, the first test and ...
