Mongolia & Ulaanbattar - The WILD Wild West

We made it to Ulaanbaatar (UB) and, unfortunately, the travel agent had read our passport country as opposed to our language preference of our itinerary so, waiting for us at the airport was a German speaking guide. To make matters even worse the Chinese travel agent decided to change us from our pre-confirmed 4 star Chinggis Khaan to the REALLY terrible Palace Hotel, should be a 0 star! After much discussion between the Geman-speaking guide, the hotel receptionists and the travel agent manag...

Russia - Mongolia

On 29th of May Florian and I arrived in Ulan Baatar, Mongolia. Our Tourguide from Skyland Tours (I really can recommend Skyland Tours, they organized a perfect tour for us) picked us up at the train station and brought us to our hotel (Palace Hotel, one of the best hotels in Mongolia), a really clean and comfortable place. Later we tried to organize a russian Visa for Florian and me, that was quite a big act. You need 1000 papers and documents. We went there at 09:00 o' clock and were immedia...

The Gobi

Crossing the border from Russia into Mongolia was quite an experience. We were kept on the train, and out of the toilets, by armed Mongolian soldiers. We saw a group of Mongolians throwing bags of money out of the train window to a little fellow who stood on the tracks in the middle of "no-mans-land". Bubbles and Funky were sharing their compartment with a Mongolian guy who had the compartment stufffed with bodybuilding supplements. When the customs inspectors came on board to search the trai...

In our room we have our very own TV which was never much use in Russia (the only English speaking channel was fashion tv), but here to our delight we have two movie channels that play films in English one after the other with not a single advert to be seen!

Another unexpected delight touched Peter right to the core - we went into a stationary shop to buy batteries and found a whole room filled with Miffy stuff! Into Mongolia

... frankie and bennys in the UK and was not really what we were looking for even though the food was good and it was an all you can eat buffet so I hit the jackpot there! I tried to get on the internet after dinnner but everywhere was having power cuts, also I got back to the hotel there was still no hot water reminded me of living back in Africa. All in all not a bad day just really tired and looking forward to a sleep and a getting into the countryside tommorow.

Being in Asia

I'm on the final train journey of my first Asian trip, the last leg from Ulaan Baatar to Beijing. The train is fairly comfy, and I’m sitting on my top bunk with my computer, munching on a not-quite-ripe Asian pear.

It’s interesting to start to feel like I’m in Asia.
