On the road again

Arrived back in Singapore today after a week back home. Have a lot of work to do this week before heading to Hong Kong next weekend but plan to get out and about as much as time and my jet lagged body allow me to. Stay tuned................. Started Sunday off with a trip to the Jarung Bird park. Now I went to Parrot Jungle when I was a kid and this is definitely a few notches above that. I was hoping to see some birds that I haven't seen before since I am in a totally different part of the w...

On the road again part II

Had a great time being home for the holidays but once again it is time to get back to work accompanied by the inevitable after holiday blues and list of good intentions. Instead of just going back to the office like I have done every January for the past several years, this time it included getting on a plane and making the 20 hour trek back to Singapore. I don't know if my journeys will truly be over at the end of this month or if my trip will be extended..either way I intend to have a blast...

Live, Love, Laugh....EAT

Okay, so I am creating this entry to start documenting some of the fabulous food I have eaten and intend to eat for the rest of my travels. If you are not interested, just skip this entry altogether. However, to all my foodie buddies out there, this is for you. I will update this section periodically, so check back. You can tell when I have updated it because it will say in red next to the entry "recently updated." In my attempts to bring you glorious food reports, I need you help to encourag...

Singapore For Kate's Birthday

I've known Kate since I arrived into Hyderabad 16 months ago...so when Kate mentioned the idea of getting a group of people together and heading over to Singapore for a weekend trip for her birthday, I was sold. I've been to Singapore before, but only for one day a few years ago...heading over for a full 4 days sounded great. When the trip finally came together, it was me, Kate, Laju and Kate's boyfriend Avinash who all finally committed and paid the cash to make it happen. Kate, Laju and I e...

A380 Day!

It is time to leave. I'm starting to use Aussie phrases like "bloke" and "good on ya" and pronounce things in the Australian way, such as "shhhedjule". But I'm excited because today I'm flying to Sydney so that I can fly on Singapore Airlines' A380 back to Singapore. But before I board the flight in Sydney I went in to town to go shopping again. You can never save too much while shopping, huh Grammy? More bling for me. Back at the airport I checked-in to my Suite for the flight to Singapore....

Hello Singapore! Singapore, our first stop, and a gentle introduction to South East Asia. In fact it couldn't be more different than the rest of the continent - spotlessly clean, not a mosiquito in sight and everything you could wish for at your fingertips. Or at least it was at the very swish and very lovely 5* Mandarin Oriental Hotel - some start for a couple of backpackers! Something tells me we shouldn't get used to this kind of luxury! A very much appreciated wedding present from Lisa's ...

Singapore Sling

What else to do with only one night in Singapore? Go for Chicken Rice at Chatterbox in the Mandarin Hotel, the home of Mandarin Chicken Rice since 1971, and then have a Singapore Sling in Raffles Hotel. Fantastic. We also managed to stay in a quirky little hotel called 1929. Quirky and designer it was, clean and refurbished it wasn't.

Historical Traveler Reviews of The Oriental Singapore

Superb!

from BDslt
Stayed at the Oriental for 6 days in March 2005. I can't recomend this hotel highly enough. We went for a Club Room which was only slightly more expensive than a standard room. Having a club room entitles you to enjoy the facilities in the Club Lounge - champagned breakfasts, afternoon tea and a complimentary bar for 2 hours each evening. The breakfasts are wonderful - no congealed buffets here, anything you want including eggs benedict, pancakes, omelettes are all freshly prepared and beautifully presented.

The rooms are extremely comfortable with fabulous views, ours was facing the harbour.

The staff are really friendly and professional, and the standard of service is incredibly high.

Will definitely make the Oriental my first choice when visiting Singapore next time.

Buidling work on city side

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at this hotel in March 2005 and it was great, the rooms are lovely and the breakfasts are terriffic. The staff could not be more helpful, especially Jane at reception.

Unfortunately there was a lot of building work to the cityview side of the hotel. The noise (and the dust on the balcony)from the building work did disturb our rest to quite an extent. If you intend to stay there ask for an harbour view room if the building work is still going on.

Marvellous!

This was a pleasant surprise! So many negative reports... Must have all been prior to renovation. This hotel is great. The views over the harbour are breathtaking and the friendliness of staff something to write home about. The newly renovated rooms are very modern, bright and comfortable. I will certainly stay here again.

Truly Outstanding

renovated Mandarin Oriental in Singapore is the best hotel we ever stayed and we often stay at Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons. The decor is wonderful - understated luxury, the service is unbeatable and the rooms are to die for. it is high tech - you can do wahtever you want with the remote control ( select the sound of the night for instance), the brkf was a dream - again the most stylish room , the mOST fantastic choice, the best service etc.we also statyed at the regent ( a four season hotel) and the MaNdarin is head and shoulders above it. it is simply snesational in everything. A+++++

Truely outstanding service

from finwalk
We have just returned from a 5 night visit to Singapore - without our children! The city is fabulous - spotlessly clean, fantastic restaurants, endless shopping malls and a cheap and efficient transport system; an average taxi journey in the city set us back about £2 - the MRT (tube) about 30p. The airport is very efficient - 20 minutes from arrival at the gate by plane to the taxi rank. We were welcomed to Singapore before we went through immigration setting the standard of welcome and service that followed throughout our visit.

What really made our trip special was The Oriental Hotel. having read reviews on this website we opted for a club room with all the benefits that that included. Fantastic rooms with an even more fantastic bathroom - lots of marble and granite ( this was every where in the hotel following an extensive renovation programme ), lovely toiletries, robes etc. surround sound in the bedroom with a DVD player and a huge bed. Club benefits included unlimited pressing and a free late checkout ( as late as midnight ).

The club lounge really made the trip special. Champagne breakfasts, unlimited soft drinks, cakes in an afternoon and Hors d'oeuvre and help yourself bar in the evening made the choice exceptional value for money. ( a glass of wine is £6 normally ).

I don't think the level of service could be bettered anywhere. Each and every member of staff greeted you when every they saw you, from the doormen to the room maids - quite unbelievable.

Lovely pool also - iced water brought round to you on a regular basis.

The one thing we didn't specify was a harbour view - the other sides were fine but a harbour view would have been better.

Would reccommend Indochine Waterfront restaurant, Banana leaf Apollo( curry served on banana leafs and eaten with your hands ) and Blue Ginger. The Hawker Centers offer incredible value for money 2 course lunch for 2 £2.50!!!

We went to Raffles for the obligatory drink which was nice but showed us that the service at the Oriental was far better.

The night safari next to the zoo was quite good, a must if you take the kids.

Research your shopping malls, some just have very upmarket shops, so if you are after ordinary things you would waste precious time in certain malls.

Expensive but superb

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here for 1 night in February on the way back from Europe. Upgraded to a club room to get late checkout. This also gave me lounge access, breakfast, cocktails, afternoon tea etc, all of which was of an extremely high standard. The service was awesome. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Back to luxury,top in service

from oew
The hotel reoppened on 1st of December ,I was one of the first guests, the hotel has undergone a 25 MM uS $ project, they made bigger bathes with extra showers, the view is perfect, the club floor is mandatory, the upgrade covers breakfast and cocktails, the hotel will only be perfectly finished in march 2005,so make sure if you stay before,if all the noise is gone.the service is utmost, brought in in the afternoon some nice hors d oeufs, the swimmingpool is very nice, and the location just next to the new concerthall and all the congress facilities.

Renovations

from A TripAdvisor Member
An excellent hotel but at the moment renovations to the Mall (in the hotel) are taking place and although the work goes from 8-6pm when we stayed drilling etc was still noisy at 9pm. The hotel dealt with it quite well but be warned it can be noisy. There are rooms which are quieter. We were in executive on 19 floor! Our travel agent hadnt warned us so the Manderin would be a better bet.

Great location and wonderful staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in April 2004. The ambience and decor was beautiful, but the staff was the biggest credit to the hotel - lovely genteel people. The location was very convenient for sightseeing and we took pleasant evening strolls along the new esplanade area, which was just accross the road from the hotel. Book a club room (on the top 2 floors) and enjoy complimentary evening cocktails plus canopes and champagne breakfasts in the exclusive club lounge during your stay. Club rooms are huge and have big marble bathrooms with walk in showers. We loved it. Highly recommended!

Good deal

from paul_nl
Stayed at the Oriental in March this year for 10 days. We had a suite at the club level with city-view. The room was just complete, everything one needs was there. The lounge on the top floor had a nice breakfast buffet and afternoon evening drinks and the service was excelent. The hotel is located in a shopping mall and near the Esplande theatre. Through the Mall you can reach the city-hall underground station.

Will stay here again
