Delhi - A trip of food, photos and more food...

I've been participating in a lot of recruiting events for my company as it's been great way to meet a lot of good people from my company, to feel like I am contributing back to the firm and I even got a free trip to Mumbai as you read in a previous blog entry. This weekend another recruiting opportunity outside of town presented itself and I find myself heading up to the capital of India, New Delhi...or as many of the locals simply call it, Delhi. Like my previous trip, I'll be going with som...

May cccMay 8th 24th Installment

May 8th 24th installment Since we are already packed and organized, we have a leisurely breakfast and plan the rest of our day. We had been fretting over how much to tip Rampal, but we finally settled on a sum and put it in an envelope for him. At noon Rampal arrived with the van to take us to the airport. We gave him 10 rolls of TP, our leftover Mezcal, his tip, and some other odds and ends that we didn't want to carry with us. At the airport we said our goodbyes and checked in for our fligh...

Delhi Tour May 9th

May 9th 25th installment In the morning we have breakfast at the hotel and wait for the arrival of our driver and guide for the day. When they arrive at the hotel, we take care of formalities, such as returning the cell phone that had been loaned to us on our first arrival in Delhi. So far that phone has been useful in making changes to our travel plans. The necessities taken care of we now head off to Rajghat, which is the name of the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi. We are given a light summary of ...

Arrival in New Delhi

Hello from New Delhi. Our trip on Swiss Air was just fine. At that time only tuk-tuks (motorized rickshaws) taxis and trucks were on the road. It is a law here that trucks can only drive and deliver during the night. It doesn't help much with the perpetual smoky haze in the air. They are rebuilding the entire infrasetructure of this city in preparatiopn for the Asian games in 2010.. Nine thousand people a day are building super highways and fast trains. When we arrived at our gated hotel there...

Happy New Yeat

We were woken at five a.m. so that we could once again experience the Ganges river. This trip was at sunrise. We got into the rowboats once again. The morning is a totally different experience. We saw the pilgrims bathing in the water and doing their sun salutations. We saw one big ghuru who leads his followers in laughing yoga. His non stop laughter can be heard way out in the water. We saw the men washing the clothes at the river's edge and we went by many of the Ashrams that famous people ...

Farewell from New Delhi

We are taking a few moments , in the spirit of the New Year, to list our bests and worsts of our wonderful trip. If this is of no interest to you, just skip it and wait for us to come home. Best place visited: (B) Varanasi (L) tie between Taj Mahal at Dawn and Varanasi at Sunset Best laugh: When our guide at Varanasi wanted us to buy a brass container to bring home holy water from the Ganges because it is the only water that is just as pure in six months as the day that you took it out of the...

Just arrived in Delhi

After about 18 hours of flight time we made it from Atlanta to Delhi (with an 8 hour layover in Mumbai). Flying business class is not too bad: It was too dark in Mumbai (both coming and leaving) to see much (most of what I saw was parked auto-cabs - must have been thousands of them). We stayed at the Marriott Renaissance during our layover (not a bad place to stay). We went out with our tour guide this morning and visited the Jama (sp?) mosque in Old Delhi. The traffic entering Old Delhi was ...

... great pictures and started our bird watching as well. If you don't know my mom she is an avid bird watcher and she spotted 4 new birds that she has never seen before at the mosque in downtown Delhi. From the mosque we walked to the Red Fort and visit this 17th century Fort. Built by the Mughal empire in was an impressively fortified Fort with high walls and great views from the interior. In all our time in Delhi and the introduction to India was very exciting.
