Australia is Awesome man!!!!! After three flights we finally arrived in Cairns. As soon as we arrived (Monday to us, Sunday to you) we had cocktails by the hotel pool! Very nice. Once unpacked we made our way down to the beach to watch the sunset. It was a public holiday here for the Queen's official birthday. (Why don't we get one of those?) There were actually people using public BBQ's by the sea. What a great way to spend a bank holiday. Next day (now Tuesday to us) we spent trying to get ...
Cairns, Australia mrandmrsb Delivered to Perth airport by our handy and free taxi (thanks Kandy!).
First jump was to Alice Springs, on the hottest day they have had for yonks - 35 degrees!! A big change from the frigid temps in Perth.
Not much happening at the Alice Springs airport.
Glad they clearly labeled the "Toilet Truck" though, you wouldn't want to confuse that with the "Water Truck".... and Virgin thought they had trouble with their dodgy chicken wraps....hmmmm.
Toilets are very low to the ground in...
Up early (for us) and ready for our Skyrail pickup @ 8:40am.
Yeah I know, doesn't "sound" that early but at this stage it still felt like 6:40am. bleurrrggh.
Skyrail cable car was very good. Nice and smooth, included two stops with boardwalks through the forest at each stop, and a lookout over the magnificent Baron falls at the second stop.
In fact, the cable car was much more impressive than Kuranda itself which is mainly a succession of market after market after market - all s...
Another early start (are we on holiday or not???) and at the Reef Fleet terminal by 8:15 for our day trip to Green island on "Big Cat Cruises".
Pleasantly surprised that there were not huge crowds here. Thought it may be packed as it's the most hyped and closest island to Cairns, being only a 45min ferry trip away.
Went for a walk around the island first. It's quite tiny - only 1.6km around so this didn't take too long. Nice clear water sparkling in the sun. Lots of photos along the...

So where did we leave you all again - its been to long?! We landed in Cairns bright and early and immediately liked the place, proper backpacking town with loads to do and loads of drinks offers (5 drinks for $10 will do me fine!), all made the better by us picking a great hostel - Calypso's (we owe you a drink EJ!)......we decided to do our planning for the rest of the east coast and booked all the major stuff like Whitsundays and Fraser sowe ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia joannehousley... and it was getting late - this site was marked as a bush camp on the map so we followed a wee track off the road and set up camp very much in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Delicious eye fillet steak, mash, carrots & beans for dinner, a HUGE moonless black sky filled to bursting with a blanket of stars, planets, satellites and two shooting stars.... and of course the man I love. What more could you want out of life???

... was Daintree river, famous for the crocodiles living in it. As opposed to a guided cruise we hired a small motor boat and four hours where looking for crocs ourselves. We searched the main stream as well as popped in at several creeks, but no success. Disappointed we grabbed fishing rods and tried our luck with the fish. Michal was the only one knowing what he was doing and indeed he caught a fairy big trevally we planned to have for dinner. Radko with ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia tsimko... simply amazing and just floating under water without any noise around you is something that I could have done for a whole week! Veronika and I spent 4 very nice days together. We booked a boat tour on the Great Barrier Reef and had a wonderful day. The weather was good, the sea sometimes a bit rough (but we didn't get seasick) and lots of beautiful things under water to see. Veronika went on an introductory dive (which unfortunately they didn't allow me to do with my blood ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia saskiab... hire prices and the cost of a train for me from Brisbane to Sydney, as she wants to stay in Brisbane longer. We are planning to drive down the coast and stop off at various places, then I want to get to Sydney for the 23rd March as my flight to Chile is on the 26th but I want to cram in a night out with a day to recover lol. We haven't put together a route or decided where we want to go yet but she is booking the car hire today so we are all sorted on ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia oldhamguy... headed to Lake Eachlin where Ems talked me in to a twiglight swim. The serene lake was surrounded by woods with lots of locals there for the evening, including the weirdo that eyed Ems up when she went to the car to fetch the camera. We rushed back to the platypus viewing point that the friendly owner of our motel had suggested we visit at sunset. Luckily we caught a fleeting ...
