The train to Ooty

... using a steam locomotive. It goes incredibly slowly taking about 5 hours to travel 45km. It stopped about 4 times on the way to refill the locomotive boiler with water which I wasn't expecting, but of course I know absolutely nothing about steam trains. The hill climb is pretty steep as far as trains are concerned - the track has an extra rack in the middle and the train uses a rack and pinion system to ease its way up the hill. The train was developed in order to help ...

As much as I love trains, I just can't seem to shake bus travel. The journey from Mysore to Ooty was a lot of fun though. I bought a very nice leather belt for 300 rupees - or just over six and a half bucks in real money. I also paid eleven dollars for a pack of eight top of the line Gillette razor blades. That's a little over half of what I pay for the same blades in Thailand.

... consisiting of numerous hairpin bends, some rather precarious, in the descent from the hills down to the jungle. It was a spectacular and enjoyable ride.

At the small town of Masinagudi we sat in the shaded seating around a tree, a green mosque beside us, waiting for John of the Jungle, our couchsurfing host, who after some while turned up in a plush airconditioned black jeep. Unfortunately for John he was suffering a bout of what he called 'man flu'. For ...
