Have visa, will travel

... be able to understand them.) Lo and behold, a nice lady with minimal accent walked me through the process and told me how to lie properly ( "just tell them your credit card name is xxxx") and viola! not only did the ticket go through, but in the 5 minutes she helped me purchase the ticket, the price DROPPED $270! This must be a sign.

I am packed. I know I have packed too much so I may have to downsize ...

Snafus up the wazoo

... for me, but I guess you could never buy a friend or relative a ticket as a gift or anything.

Does China forget that they OWN America? What do they have to lose?

I am now entering Day 3 of the China Air debacle. Get smart, Sharon, and pay the extra $100 for Emirates.

The first thing people say to me is "Don't you have to pack a lot?" Heck, no, quite the opposite. You KNOW you have to buy clothes and HBA there so there ...

Back in the Catskills - where to next?

... Godzilla) and Elan was the King. Our instructor was a great sailor and has sailed around the world.

I learned lots of knots and we got to sail every day. On the last day we sailed all the way to the Brooklyn Bridge from the Upper West Side boat basin. I hope that I can do it again next year.

After sailing camp, we headed to the Beaverkill, where we have our house in the Catskills and where I have been going to camp every year since I was only ...

School's out for the summer

... it was one of our best years ever.  Made AYP for the 6th year in a row, and I am very proud of the teachers and staff who made it happen with our students.

Attached is a photo of my school from the website.  I hope that we can link up with a school in Poland and try to do some live webinars with a Polish school next year.  More updates to follow, stay tuned.

About a week to go until Fulbright begins

... is like going home for me as I start this journey as my home of record is Mount Vernon, VA, in the DC suburbs of northern Virginia. The second day (June 19th) has us at Catholic University in Washington for a day of seminars. Looking at the schedule, I plan on visiting my dad who is in the Veterans Administration Medical Center nursing home across the street from Catholic University.  Will take the Metro ...

Two weeks out

Two weeks out from starting the Fulbright Seminar Abroad in Poland.  As I thought about the curriculum project I have to complete, one topic I keep coming back to is the topic of genocide and in particular, the Holocaust.  Having been to the Holocaust Memorial Museum several times, most recently in April on our school's 8th grade DC trip, I thought that it would be interesting to take a closer look at how countries teach students about the Holocaust in public ...

started a travel blog for Poland seminar abroad

It is Sunday today, and a month prior to the Fulbright Hays Seminar abroad on June 17, 2009.  I decided to start a travel blog and figure out how to use it correctly long before I head to Poland.  I looked at some other travel blogs on the web and it seems the easiest way to keep family, friends and colleagues informed on my experiences.  Here goes, see if I can figure out how to import photos and other documents.

Preparations - mental and otherwise

I'm getting ready to retire and wondering what to do with the next half (OK, maybe 3/8ths) of my life.

I have been blitz-kreiging applications to schools in Thailand and Dubai, as well as the Peace Corps. (That application was a killer!) While my heart belongs to Thailand, the money in Dubai entices me, and the prospect of becoming a Peace Corps volunteer is intriguing. But 27 months! If only it were for 1 year, I'd be next in line.

Will I have enough money to survive ...
