Made it to Miami Yay, two days after I left Hobart I've finally arrived at my destination! Of course, the beautiful, arty hotel I'd booked at South Beach, Miami (complete with meal package and a night planned at the famous Mango Club) had to be cancelled (nonrefundable) in lieu of an evening of disappointment near Melbourne airport - but that's all part of travelling. Finally at the Port of Miami, checked my now colourless black suitcase in, and waited ...

After we were finally well away from Miami, we went to get some dinner. We had signed up for anytime dining, which I assumed was in the big dining room at the front of the ship, just like our other cruises. Except that we had no deck plan of the ship, so we only vaguely knew where to go. There were deck plans of each floor at the elevators, and the basics of what was on each floor. Stopped of for lunch on the way then arrived at around 3ish and checked into our first hostel of the trip. It is really nice and clean compared to the hostel I stayed at in ...

... our hostel, so we spent quite a bit of time getting back! We did find a little shopping centre on the way back, with a pet store where we played with some kittens for a while. Always time well spent!

On Sunday we took an open top bus tour around Miami Beach and downtown Miami. This was quite good, but not as good as others we have done. Downtown Miami didn’t really have much to offer, and we just drove around looking at mildly ...

... an air-boat ride. Monday the southern part of the park as we drove to the Florida Keys. Lots of alligators - within touching distance for anyone foolhardy enough - egrets, several kinds of heron, anhingas (like a cormorant but prettier - also known as snake fish, snakes, vultures, mangroves etc. The Everglades is actually a vast river, eight miles or more wide but only a foot or so deep that flows through grassland with bits of drier and dry land here and there supporting trees.
