Wednesday 8 October today we left Bucharest for Veliko Tărnovo. Enroute we stopped to visit the Ivanovo Rock hewn Churches which are included in the UNESCO list Of World and Cultural Heritage. After slowly climbing a rather steep gradient we reached the main church in the rock. The frescos were amazing as were the views across the limestone canyon which had been carved by rivers thousands of years ago. The walk down the steps saw our knees ...

... breath away. The lighting was dim, but the walls and ceilings were fully adorned with modernist, beautiful murals. The altarpiece seemed ripped from another world. Humans had inhabited this hilltop for over 5,000 years, but for some reason the latest thing to sit atop is a very new church. Yet somehow it fit perfectly. I have never seen anything like it. ... communism. Beautiful mosaics surrounded the amphitheater depicting kings, battle scenes, cosmonauts, and of course a stern-looking Karl Marx, Lenin, and friends. Standing in the center, the acoustics were impeccable. The outer concourse contained even more mosaics facing beautiful views out the UFO’s giant windows. A new regime, different name, same policies popped up in his place and ruled until 1996 when they finally had their first real democratic elections. It has taken the Romanians until 2004 to reach the GDP level of 1989 so this has been one poor place for a long time and has plenty more work to go.
