... shiny from having been rubbed by the students for luck. The statue is in memory of "The Cute Guy," a violinist from the area. He played in a band and used to make jokes about the Communist leaders. He was eventually thrown into a labor camp for this and for being a homosexual. He was beaten every day for ten days, when he died. The Reds were a fun bunch of guys, weren't they? So his statue sits outside the arts school so that he can hear the music every day. Wow what an exhausting but outstanding day. All my reservations about flying to Istanbul and beginning this adventure from there are now gone. This place as seen to that on its own!

As it was a cloudless, blue sky, I got up early to wash the inside of the tent out as well as wash up all the bedding stuff. It was simple enough and by 9 o'clock, everything was already dry.

... thus created a fourth and fifth cup for the vino. We got through the border with little issue, even with the obligatory "drug bum, drug bum" from Ivan whilst pointing at Vlad. It was, when all said and done a fairly uneventful train ride. After getting off the train we caught taxis to our next destination, Veliko Turnovo. Took the train to Veliko Turnovo, a popular tourist town in the mountains of Bulgaria. It is a very nice town with Medieval streets and architecture. It was also the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th to the 14th centuries. Above the town is Tsarevets castle.
