It was around two o'clock by now so after lunch we headed straight off to the monastery. It is dramatically set in Dryanovo Gorge - apparently most of the monasteries in Bulgaria were deliberately built in geographically dramatic places. The monastery was quite small but extremely beautiful inside. Every church and cathedral I've been to in Bulgaria has had a stall selling beeswax candles and little religious trinkets and this one was no exception; I bought and lit a candle for Dad. ...

... I don't think this is a traditional Bulgarian thing - I think they got this style of coffee from either Greece or Turkey.

Opposite the café was Daskalov House, a National Revival house museum originally built for a silk and rose-oil merchant in 1808. We passed by possibly the ugliest statue in South Eastern Europe. Up until 10 years ago, Romania had the lowest amount of statues in the whole of Europe so the Government set about correcting that statistic. This was one was a doozy. It shows the Roman Emperor, Trajan, holding a wolf with a conjoined snake at one end, symbolising the Romanian ...

... had another ~1500 meter climb to our hotel which borders a colorful town square. It's a beautiful evening and we've just returned from a unique dinner of stuffed grilled whole squid - very yummy. Tomorrow is a rest day. We have only 1 week left and only 6 riding days left. I have very mixed emotions and plan to take it one day at a time, fully enjoying the days to come. So tomorrow we explore on foot..... ...
