... 6500 feet. This is home to the Smokey Bear National Park (I assume where Smokey got his start). The only Smokey we saw had multiple bullet holes for his contribution to "Stop Forest Fires". Our docent at the Space Hall of Fame had advised us to see the Three Rivers Petroglyph Park, so we took a long detour to see that. There we were, driving along the 380 between Roswell and Socorro - a three hour journey across endless desert plains and climbing higher and higher towards lonely mountains and isolated gullys and canyons. The view changes every so often between lightly wooded meadows hiding elk, deer and jack rabbit to the infinite vistas across an ancient lakebed some few million years old. The sky is clouded and this makes for some really violent looking storms as each weather system hits ...
Hiked trail to Smith's Spring. 285N thru Carlsbad NM then 82W to Cloudcroft. Booked in here till Thursday, looks interesting place - first one we could even consider - but arrived at dusk so will take time to explore the local climate...cultural/political/weather... .to divine whether any possibility at all. Now have accommo with Brandi's friend in Santa Fe for the weekend so will be heading up ...
Made our way to higher elevation (8400ft, 2560m above sea level) near a winter ski resort in the hope of some cool air and a better night's sleep. It worked a treat and the fresh mountain air was a welcome relief! Bessie didn't love it as much as we did and the high elevation caused a blown coolant hose (the noise we heard wasn't birds chirping after all). Luckily we heard it straight away while we where stopped ...
... to gamble and we took care of Quinn. Johan saw Chef Irvine coming our way and we stopped him to ask if we could take a photo with him. He was really nice, and spent about 5 minutes talking to us. When the kids joined us again their excited faces from earlier turned green with envy, they now looked like the little aliens from Roswell. Quite the sight to see! The parents again one upped the “aliens” – go parents go!!!
