Semanyak: Valentine's Day at the Legian

So I take it back - St. Martins Lane in London is no longer my favorite hotel in the world - The Legian in Seminyak, Bali, is my new favorite hotel. Jesus H. Christ this place is ridiculous. It was a little disconcerting at first, I must say - my driver from Ubud Sari Resort stopped at the main entrance, and normally at a 5-star hotel that's when you get out and they start helping you with your luggage, right? Well, no. Here, since the bombings, every high class hotel hires security with DOGS...

Rewind to Bali

... for the day – much better than mixing with the riff raff on the commoners beach.

Pretty soon though, the 15th had rolled around and it was time for us to leave Bali and leave
Indonesia. It'd been a brilliant time. We'd covered a hugh amount in distance and looking back now there's such a difference between the wilds of sumatra, the cultural bits of Java and the beaches and diving of Bali & Nusa Tenggara. At times the transport ...

bali here we come

... had a glass of chilled red wine not quite the same, they do not do warm !! as there were 3 roads from our hotel we decided to take a different route, this one took us in a more upmarket area with modern buildings & although there were small holdings inbetween with cattle grazing & rice fields, it looked as though these were being sold off for new developments with luxury apartments not sure where the cattle will graze, dotted along the roadside were basket ...

A nice long walk on the beach

Today started out like any other vacation day. We are not super impressed with our breakfast, so we have been hitting up the local Starbucks and this great bakery called Daily Bread. Their banana bread is beyond yummy. We grab a few items to go and head off to the beach for a little walk along the water. It's a nice day, but we are prepared with sunblock and a hat and glasses. We talked and watched the people ...

Island Calm and the Great Mola Mola

... to do as I was hungry for diving after the Sipidan experience. I arranged bus and boat transport that night to take me the following morning to Nusa Lembognan which is a small island about 90 minutes by boat from Bali. Upon landing I sought out some cheap accommodation and a dive shop. The accommodation was certainly cheap and the dive shop guys seemed very friendly. The beach at Lembognan was very quiet and consisted of surfers and divers and not ...

Back in Bali

We promised ourselves that we would be back to one of our most favorite places in the world. For those of you that may not know us well, we traveled extensively in 2003-04. We lived in Southern Spain for 5 months, on the coast of Portugal for two and traveled to just under 50 cities in the EU. We were also in Mexico for 6 months and South East Asia for five. So when I say favorite places, I don't ...

Birthday in Bali

... visit to the local art market. A couple of hours later and thoroughly drenched we return to our villa before heading out again to a local Balinese restaurant, where there is a performance of the "frog dance" - the dance is entertaining but the narrator's scratcy voiceover is more so - he could be mistaken for a death metal band singer - rrrrrrrock on! The next day Luke is awoken by a wonderful breakfast and his new fav banana pancake with the addition of a few candles - Luke is now ...

Day 2 - Bali - Hey Rasta Girl!

... a bit round trip) and I'm sitting in the balmy night with flashes of lightning, a rum and the bushmans. It's looked a bit stormy all day but no rain yet. Went to a Huge surf shop with all girls stuff (Surfer Girl) with a whole 'Emily' room (maybe it's some long lost goth in me coming out or the woodwork). I can hear the distant thunder now so maybe it will cool down soon - but I'm sure I'll be fast asleep in our air conditioned room - Nite.

... storey bamboo structure by the sea. I asked for a table for one and received a pitiful but kind look from the waiter. The tables were full of romantic couples and the lighting hard to read by - obviously meant for younger eyes than mine! The rain started in earnest and I had the profound experience of being rained on eating my ...

Diving the US Liberty

... actually have to free-dive. That means spending over half your time on the surface and not get to look at the pretty fishes for very long once down there, but then you remember how super cool you are, so who cares. To be honest, I did end up SCUBA diving the wreck on day two, if only just to check how deep the swim through I did the day before was (18m). I also rented a camera to get some shots, of which I've attached the best. Lots of water, fish and boat in them, you get the idea.
