Historical Traveler Reviews Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel Galena

      Unbelievable leval of personal service

      from

We have always loved to visit the town of Galena Illinois because of it's charm and friendly people. Now that we have stayed at the Irish Cottage Three times, it is fair to say it is a perfect fit with this magical village. It would be easy to give a positive review on the alluring structure alone, but it was the people that won us over. The personal care and friendlyness will create a new benchmark for industry. We have found the place to be spotless and immaculate on every visit from our room to the pool to the library. but let me tell you about my favorite place, the Pub. A genuine bona fide Irish Pub. This is where the family can feel comfortable having a few snacks and refreshments in the afternoon or enjoy the authentic entertainment in the evening with a pint of stout. It seems everyone at the Cottage has an Irish accent as well as me by the end of my stay.

      Better than Ireland!

      from

Better than Ireland because I can go there for only a weekend, and then leave reluctantly. Service and quality of any 5 star hotel. The Pub grub is probably all great but once I had the shepard's pie even the stacked corned beef my wife loved couldn't make me order anything else.

From the solitude of the library with a good book to a pint in the lively pub, this is a Great Hotel. If I want anything from a professional Spa, Large meeting room or fittness and swimming to a great getaway The Irish Cottage is my ONLY choice in Galena.

      Not all that impressive

      from

Pub was amazing. Gorgeous woodwork. Fabulous drinks. Hotel was disappointing. Paid a lot of money for a room with a fireplace and jacuzzi. The jacuzzi still had hair in it, although it was set up like it had been cleaned. The fireplace was nice. Beds were no more comfortable than your 10 year old mattress at home and we hardly had any sleep due to the incredible foot stomping we heard above our room all night. Our concerns were brought up to the owner, who was much too involved with female patrons to listen to our troubles.

      Absolutely loved our stay!

      from

We have stayed at the Irish Cottage 3 times within the last year and have loved each visit to the hotel. The atmosphere is wonderful, from the pleasant staff to the decor- much of the woodwork -especially the pub area- was shipped directly from Ireland. The rooms named after the counties of Ireland and the artwork done by a well known Irish artist give a real sense of "being there". We found the rooms very clean and loved the tub and fireplace that ours had and we loved our view! The pub was named after the owners grandfather and you will find you feel part of the family in the pub. Our children, 8 & 4, look foward to each visit and look for their favorite staff members. The entertainment in the pub was great, musicians, Irish Dancers, and one of the bartenders as the MC of the evening draws participation from the patrons! My daughter was inspired to take up Irish Step Dancing after one of our stays there. The view from the rooms looking into the rolling countryside is awesome- just look out the windows from the library area and the breakfast room. The staff is very friendly and made us feel right at home. The pool and hot tub are a nice to relax at after a day in Galena and very kid friendly. Our last trip was for our wedding anniversary so I treated myself to some time at the spa while the kids were at the pool! The hotel van drove us to the restaurant of our choice in Galena as parking is very tight- we truly appreciated that and the kids thought it was a very big deal to ride in the hotel van. We have been visiting the Galena area for over 15 years and will definitely stay at the Irish Cottage for each visit.

The perfect Irish Getaway within hours of Chicago

      from

For the perfect weekend getaway consider the Irish Cottage. An Irish adventure without the worries of travel. The staff made our children feel right at home -- an extremely "kid friendly atmosphere" . The pub was charming and the entertainment was wonderful. We spent many hours in the pool which was kept very clean. Our children continue to ask, "When are we going back?" I would strongly recommend this hotel as families travel to enjoy Galena this summer!

Nice place but don't look for any hand outs

      from

I was enjoying my stay at the Cottage for my anniversary until the second day when it was discovered that for somereason the Cottage charged my debit card for twice the room rate for my entire stay and wiped out my bank account leaving me nothing for the rest of my weekend. When brought to the attention of management/owner they guaranteed that come Monday when the bank opened it would all be taken care of. That didn't help me at that moment since it was only Saturday. We received and apology but that was all. No comp for a night, no comp for dinner. My anniversary vacation was ruined and nothing was done. The most we got was we were more than welcome to eat in their pub and they would grasiously charge us for it next week. Our happiness was not a concern for them, afterall, they had gotten our money

      Too Expensive for Quality

      from

I recently booked a surprise weekend for my husband in the Aran Suite at the Irish Cottage... I had quite a time getting accurage pricing and information via email so I think it would be quicker to have just called them. Upon arriving and seeing the outside we were very excited b/c from the outside the place looks so exciting, unique and elegant even when walking in the lobby, and library looks great. We paid over $250 / night for our room and we expected it to be near perfect. That is a lot of money and we really thought that it was just a normal Holiday Inn or Comfort Inn hotel room. It was small, not fancy. We decided that we paid too much right away but after trying to sleep that night we were positive. We were on the bottom floor and everytime the people above us moved we could hear the ceiling and things shake.. they weren't being loud just doing normal stuff, they just don't have good sound proofing. We ended up complaining after breakfast and the service and staff was great. They gave us a deal and let us check out early so my advice is to request a top floor room, call and get information and pricing, don't be surprised that you are actually paying the most for the Irish atmostphere not the actuall room, and most of all if you have a problem tell them b/c they were very willing to help.

A beautiful, fun place to stay

      from

What a wonderful place!!! The decor is beautiful and authentic (I was told much of it came directly from Ireland) from the lobby to the pub, to the rooms (some have fireplaces like they do in Ireland). The food is great (and also authentic..right down to the butter) and the service is impeccable. The staff goes out of their way to make sure everything is just perfect! For a rollicking Irish good time, if you get a chance, stop in at the pub in the evening. There is always someone singing and/or playing the Irish songs and many times people will be singing along. It is so much fun! Also they have Irish step dancers (girls in authentic Irish costumes who step dance to the Irish music...a little like Riverdance). After staying here, when I'm in Galena, I won't stay anywhere else.

      Definitely the Irish Getaway

      from

The Irish Cottage was a cute place. The rooms were very clean and the staff was really nice. It is more like a hotel--the name is deceiving.

I was thinking it would be more like a Bed and Breakfast--but it's more like a little hotel. The restaurant has an Irish menu for the those who like that type of food. If you are looking for a getaway make sure you get the room with the hot tub and sitting room--otherwise the indoor public pool and hot tub come with the screaming kids!! :) It does have a nice library at the front entrance where you can sit and quietly read on beautiful leather chairs and couches. Would recommend--just know that it's not the romantic getaway unless you stay in your room!!

      Awesome place to stay.......

      from

the irish cottage inn is the best place my wife and i have ever stayed at in galena. everything was clean roomy and the staff exceeded anyones expectations.. I recomend anyone to stay there.

... are all unique and the shops are as varied. One shop, Galena General Store has more hot sauces than I've ever seen in one place. I know Dick Wilson and Dave Millross would have been in "Hot Sauce" heaven.

The town sits near a river and the entrance has flood gates as that river can overflow. Just a unique place. You will enjoy the pictures soon. This would be a great road trip destination for us motor home junkies.

More later as internet connections not too good. Pictures won't upload yet so stay tuned. . .

After packing the coach Friday and Saturday, we hitched up the Escape and headed west. I have included a picture taken by my friend Jim Tschantz. I can't say I don’t do windows any more. It was an uneventful trip through Grand Rapids, past Holland and Benton Harbor into Indiana. Being Sunday, traffic was light and road construction ...

We drove until about 8ish and then we stopped at a KOA in a small place called Lena. It was a beautiful little caravan park, with a pool and slide, an awesome playground for Kaya, even with a jumping pillow! :) we pretty much had dinner and ...

We dropped down under the clouds and into the turbulence, but Alex was fine with that. The reason we'd come down early was to look for the location where the movie Field of Dreams was shot. We found it, in part because if you look very closely on the FAA's Sectional chart, "Field of Dreams" is actually marked! We orbited the field once, dashed into Dubuque to pick up a rental car, then headed right back to the ball field.

... on our trip, apart from what I've mentioned already we've also encountered many deer. We were following the river again from there, to our next stop at Davenport and the National Mississipi River Museum and Aquarium. The drive into town was disconcerting with numerous pawn brokers, strip clubs and tattoo parlours in quite a run down neighbourhood. But the museum and aquarium were good even though we didn't have much time. Luckily we beat the storms in ...
