So relaxed

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at The Hummingbird in 2003. Initially just planning to spend out first 3 nights there, we ended up returning for a further night at the end of our holiday as we loved it so much. A really friendly place, but not at all intrusive. The food & hospitality is great and the rooms are really clean and comfortable. We were fortunate to have almost a 24 hour delay on our return flight, so got to spend even more time there relaxing by the pool! Will definitely go back!

PEACEFUL RELAXING PLACE TO STAY

We stayed at the Hummingbird for a week in March but wished we had stayed for two. This is a small family run hotel, reminded us of "living the dream" on TV. It is in a very quiet relaxing location and a good base for exploring the island. Food is very good and very reasonable prices. The family really make you feel welcome and are very helpful, even running you down to the beach if you are too lazy to walk.

We had some good laughs here with the family's experiences of betting the place built. Ask them about it and you will have a great laugh! I don't think you could get better value for money on the island. We would certainly book here again. Overall a very good weeks holiday, what more can you ask?

I decided to book this accomodation for a suprise 7 day holiday for my wife and I. Why? because of the good reviews posted on this site by other users. This was our first attempt at independant travel and the family that own and run this small hotel certainly helped in making the holiday the success it was. Yes the accomodation is basic and the menu may not be as extensive as many you may encounter but rarely will you experience service of this nature. The rooms are serviced daily, the public areas and pool are kept spotlessly clean. The food is excellent and yes they are Yorkshire Puddings worth traveling half way around the world for. There was nothing that was too much trouble. The relaxed atmosphere created by the family certainly influenced the many guests that we met during our stay, some visiting for one night to others staying for three weeks, people from many countries. If we visit (that should be 'when') Tobago again we will want to be staying at the Humminbird. I doupt I could find better value anywhere on the island but the real reason would be to visit new friends. Phil, March 2004

The very best meal of our trip was prepared by Shane.

We happened across The Hummingbird during the last part of our trip.

Alas, we were committed to staying elsewhere.

We stopped in for a frosty beer on a hot afternoon and were greeted by some of the friendliest people on the island. What a wonderful little place they've made. We were invited to come 'round for Sunday night's Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding.

I have eaten and made Yorkshire Pudding all my life, but Shane's was the best I'd ever had. No wonder his closely guarded recipe is sought after by some of the island's best restaurants. His hand picked roasted beef was exquisite. All in all, it was the best meal we had on the island. The friendly conversation and company made the evening perfect.

Thank you Shane, Denise, Pete and Joan. It was lovely meeting you. Next time we visit the island, you'll be booking a room for Kimbra and Simon from Edmonton.

A great place to stay...

Just returned Jan. 16 after 8 days at the Hummingbird. Clean, basic, affordable rooms ideal for the budget traveller. What makes the place so great is the Brisith family who runs it who bend over backwards to make your holiday as pleasurable as possible. From advice on local places to go to complimentary car rides practically anywhere, from great stories to outstanding and affodable food, no question the Hummingbird is destined for greatness, it being around only a few years now. The pool and courtyard maximise your tanning time if you wish to avoid the beach. The restaurant onsite arguably has the some of the best and most reasonably priced food, from traditional British fare (Sunday's Yorkshire dinner is a must!) to local faves. The bar may have the cheapest beer on the island to be found at a bar. No TVs or fridges or tubs, but you're not in Tobago for things you can get at home. The location is perfect as well, near to other eateries and popular Store Bay Beach At $45 US a night including continental breakfast for 2, there should be no hesitation: just stay there!

Loved the Humming bird

As frequent travellers to Tobago The Humming Bird has to be the most friendly, hospitable and value for money hotel that can be found on the Island. Pete Joan Denise and Shane could not have been better to us, their motto Arrive as Strangers Leave as friends is the only way to describe their hospitality. As a party of eight our individual needs were more than met, their kindness and helpfulness is to be commended.

The food was excellent and this has to be attributed to Shanes cooking.

The family atmosphere was great and being in a smaller establishment we were able to meet and talk to the other guests which was a bonus. We are already checking datres and will be booking to go back to The Hummingbird. Their advice for using Frankies Tours was well worth listening to, we went on the snorkling and fishing trip and were lucky enough to catch a fish that Shane cooked to perfection. The two star attractions at the Humming Bird Are Jessie and Tottie Shane and Denises two daughters they are charming, polite and cute as can be. We look forward to seeing them at some point in the year. We will definately be going back, so Shane get the Burgers and Lasgne readySarah Leighton & Family

A rare and wonderful lodging

My wife and I just returned from a week in Tobago, staying at the Hummingbird. We were treated with respect and decency, and good humor from the family who run the small hotel. Their names are Peter, his wife, Joan, their daughter, Denise, and the son-in-law, and chef, Shane. They're originally from York, England. Although Joan was born in Trinidad. There are 8 simply designed, but clean rooms that surround a modest pool, and delightful cafe. Shane cooks meals throughout the day, and he's a very good chef. There is always an open bar. You're likely to meet the other guests coming in and out of the place. Most are European (Tobago hasn't caught on as much with Americans). Many English and Scottish guests, some Canadians, and Scandanavians, and even some from French Guianna. Conversation is lively and friendly. The rooms have tiled floors, an adequate shower with an electrically heated hot water system, and the bed was firm. Airconditioning too, but no TV. The price is attractive, more than fair. The location is good too. Just far away from the hub-bub of the main tourist strip, but close enough with a 10-15 minute walk. You'll love it.

We felt right at home

My wife and I just spent nine days in Tobago. We'd originally intended to spend one night at the Hummingbird, but the English family that runs it were so helpful that we ended up using it as a base of operations for three days before heading up the leeward shore, and then used it for our final two nights on the way out.

These guys do all the little extras that you WILL NOT find elsewhere - airport pickup is automatic, they'll drop you off at the beach at Mt.Irvine, Buccoo or Pigeon Point (recommend the former) and then come and get you.

They also have a great little restaurant and bar that is very affordable, and they create a Yorkshire pudding dinner special on Sunday nights that is the real thing.

We'd stay with them again in a minute.

The Hummingbird's personal touch

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Hummingbird Hotel was the best accommodation I have experienced in quite a long time. The warm family who runs this intimate, beautiful hotel (three generations under one roof), took personal responsibility for my friend and I having a fabulous and adventurous vacation. They not only arranged successful tours for us on Tobago, but even hooked us up with a driver and tour guide in Trididad. I appreciated the interest that they took in my life and the fact that they seemed to truly enjoy running their estabishment. Everytime we returned from dinner or from an adventure, they were there to greet us and chat with us about our experiences. They went above and beyond their roles as hosts and I consider it a great stoke of luck to have found the Hummingbird. Our vacation would not have been what it was if we hadn't stayed there at the beginning of our trip and I very highly recommend this lovely hotel to anyone travelling in Tobago. It is a relatively new place and it deserves all the guests it can get. All the best, Kristy Howe Atlanta, Georgia, USA azada@thejenkins.org

The Hummingbird is a good place to stay !

If you're looking for a nice place to stay on Tobago I can recommend THE HUMMINGBIRD HOTEL in Crown Point. I stayed there for 10 days with a friend of mine and we felt at home from the first day ! It's a small hotel run by a very nice and friendly family. 'Arrive as strangers, leave as friends' is not just a slogan there. They try to help you with whatever you're planing. They organize cars, tours, flights and give you very useful tips what to do and what to see. They offer a shuttle service to and from the beaches and the airport. The hotel is near to the airport and the two beaches Store Bay and Pidgin Point. There are some bars and restaurants near by but they have a nice restaurant at the hotel as well (with excellent food). I enjoyed my time there very much and I think our holidays wouldn't haven been such a success without the help of these people !
