Historical Traveler Reviews of The Hotel Washington Washington DC

Great location and a fine stay!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just returned from a long vacation, which included a 4 night stay at the Hotel Washington. This is an older hotel, a block away from the White House, and a short walk to the mall and all of it's attractions. Can't figure out the negative comments posted earlier about this hotel, because we had an excellent stay. The room was plenty big for 5 of us, and the breakfast, included in the rate, was outstanding. The service was great, and they even prepared items not on the normal buffet for our kids. They are renovating the lobby, though I would think that would be finished soon, but if you are spending your time in a hotel lobby in Washington, then you are misssing out on a lot! The room was immaculate and neatly cleaned everyday. No complaints at all from any of us five, in fact, we will stay there again when we make another trip to D.C. which is definitely needed, as 4 days is not enough.

If you like modern, plain, bland chains, stay elsewhere, but you can't go wrong at the Hotel Washington, and as I mentioned, the location is as good as it gets in D.C. (...and if you get in late as we did, walk up the street to the Old Ebbett's Grill for a great late meal.)

Pleasently Surprised, but...

My boyfriend & I visited DC the last weekend in July and stayed at the Hotel Washington. We got a great price for two nights that included two continental breakfasts and two drinks at their famous rooftop bar/resturant.

After reading mixed reviews on the internet, I was pleasently surprised! Although the lobby was in the process of remodeling, the staff at check-in was very attentive, and the room (king) was lovely. Service at the breakfast was fair, but cannot complain for the price (free!). Only other drawback was the rooftop bar - there was a VERY long line each night! These two negatives are minor, and easily overlooked for the prime location and great price.

We will return to DC and will stay at the Hotel Washington again, and further recommend it to others!

Great stay

We stayed at the Hotel Washington August 4-6, 2004 with 3 grandchildren. The room was spacious and included 2 double beds and a pull-out couch. That saved the expense of a rollaway that I had requested. After reading previous reviews, I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of the hotel. The lobby carpet was being removed causing some congestion in that area, but areas for walking were safe and the workmen and staff were very accomadating. The elevators worked perfectly during our stay. There was no charge for use of the TV as had been mentioned in aonther review. We did not use the internet connection as we have wireless. Our rate(booked directly through the hotel) was $135 and included full buffet breakfast for the 5 of us. The dining room staff was pleasant and even made hot chocolate for the children on a chilly morning after our 7:30 am tour of the White House(which is less than a 3 minute walk to the tour location). We would stay again and recommend this hotel for those who want to walk to The Mall and its many attractions.

Affordable, clean and comfortable

After booking the Hotel Washington for $109 per night through Capital Reservations, I found these reviews online. After reading them, I was a bit hesitant to stay there, but other hotels were already booked or out of my budget. What a relief it was to find that the Hotel Washington was clean, comfortable, and a nice, convenient place to stay. It didn't resemble the awful hotel described in previous reviews. I stayed there for 3 nights at the end of July 2004.

My room (2 double beds) was small, but it was clean and had one of the most comfortable hotel matresses that I've slept on in a long time. The room was cleaned and vacuumed daily. The bathroom was a bit small, and the counter space around the sink was very limited, but that's typical for a building of its age. The building was old and showed a bit of wear and tear (rust on the metal soap holder in the shower, nicks and scratches on the wood furniture) but it also had a lot of charm and character you don't find in newer chain hotels. I thought the doorbell was a cute feature, and saved you from hearing knocks on other people's doors.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, there were signs by the elevator stating that they were upgrading them. I didn't see any work being done, but I also didn't find that the wait for the elevator took any longer than most hotels. The elevator, because of its age, was small and could only carry about 7 people.

I didn't eat at the roof restaurant, but the view was fantastic. The hotel was also very conveniently located near the mall, and was between two metro stations.

If you like the charm of historic buildings, this is a great place to stay. If you like generic, sanitized, cookie-cutter chains, you may be somewhat disappointed. Also, I wouldn't pay their rack rate of $200+ - it doesn't have all the ammenities to support that type of rate. However, if you get a rate around $110 per night, this is a great place to stay.

Would rather stay on the street

Working in legislative advocacy for healthcare, I have traveled to DC for years. I usually stay at the larger chain hotels, but since room rates are at a very high premium this time of year, I thought I'd try to save my company some money and try the Hotel Washington. I learned my lesson - you get what you pay for, in this case! To give you an idea, the first room I was given had someone else's things all over. I was given a second room AFTER the desk clerk went up and checked it herself to make sure it was okay. Imagine my shock when even after it was personally approved, the first thing I had to do when I walked into the bathroom was flush the toilet. I don't think the room had seen a vacuum in weeks and there was so much gunk and dust between and behind the furniture, I almost gagged. Since it was too late to find other accommodations, I stayed there one night. During the night on two separate occasions, someone tried to get into my room. I didn't sleep ONE minute. I will GLADLY pay the higher room rates from now on and stay somewhere else. While The Hotel Washington has a great rooftop bar with one of the greatest views anywhere, one should go into the elevator and press NOTHING but "R" for rooftop and then go straight out of there if they go there at all. It was absolutely HORRIBLE.

Dusty, Dingy, Icky!!

I stayed at Hotel Washington May 24-24 on travel from my job. I LOVE the historical buildings etc. in DC. However, I was not impressed with Hotel Washington. The restaurant on the roof is the only positive thing that it had going for it. I wanted to check out after I got there but the receipt said they would charge 50 bucks if you left earlier than your reservation stated. So I was stuck.

First of all the elevator had a sign in front of it that said "please be patient, they are working on them." (something to that effect). Well, I learned from frequent travelers that that sign had been there for months. How long does it take to repair three elevators??? Needless to say, it FOREVER and a DAY to catch the elevator down, especially in the morning when you needed to be in the conference/workshop.

Now, for the room - - It was horrible, when I walked in there were flys/bugs swarming around. I pulled the curtains and there was layers of dust on EVERYTHING. As previous reviews suggest, the rooms are small. They are very dingy and you feel dirty the entire time you are there. I thought something was crawling on me. On one evening I ordered a frozen daiquiri for room service. It took sooooo long to get there, I almost canceled it. The next morning, the maid "cleaned" my room But the glass was STILL there that evening when I returned. I called to complain and the person over housekeeping said it was a new girl ??? Did they offer to come and clear the dish from my room??? "No!" I also asked the head person was it there policy to vacuum each day. She said yes. My room was unvacuumed for at least two days and I did not have anything in the floor.

Needless to say, I will NEVER stay there again. There are plenty more hotels in the district that are worthy of 150.00 a night!!!

Terrible

from A TripAdvisor Member
I got the room from capitol reservations for $125 which I thought was a good deal. (I've stayed in WONDERFUL Dc hotels for less by reserving online) Well, this was a mistake. When I arrive I found a dingy little room. There was a half-used gallon of Poland Springs water left on the nightstand by previous occupant. Bath had no soap or shampoo (except the used soap bars left on the sink and shower from previous occupant) and the carpet was unvacuumed. Since the hotel boasts "high speed internet access" I tried to connect my laptop and quickly learned that the internet was tied into the TV set and offered limited services. All the TV stations required a FEE, even broadcast stations. Complaints to desk proved fruitless. Never again.

Hotel Washington in DC

My husband & I would highly recommend the Hotel Washington. It is centrally located & trolley stop is next door to the hotel. We tried all 3 restaurants & would definitely recommend all 3. Our last night there we had an excellent meal overlooking the Washington monument. Rooms were average size for city hotel & very clean. No complaint there. Staff was always very helpful. All in All a great vacation.

Not a bad place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed there the end of August for a few days. Rooms were a little on the smaller side, but neat with some very minor negatives, like peeling wallpaper in the bathroom and maybe the first GFI outlet ever made, but aside from those, it's a nice place to stay. Definately consider the rooftop restaurant for one meal. Lunch prices weren't too bad for DC, and be aware that parking is now $25/night. I noticed that some travel guides have parking listed for $20/night. Staff was friendly enough as well. All in all, you could do a lot worse than the Hotel Washington.

Very disappointed

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for multiple nights on a package deal that included a full breakfast for $99 per night. It seemed like a good deal. However, on the first day they didn't clean our room at all! We complained to multiple staff members and heard various excuses: we left our suitcases too close to one of the beds (so why not clean the rest of the room?); the maid is pregnant; etc. The next day they did clean the rooms but did not vacuum the floor, which was noticeably dirty. We complained to the manager who pledged to "fire whoever was responsible." The next day, however, it was the same story: the floor was not vacuumed and still very dirty. We just laughed that time and decided to write about our experience on the web - "don't get mad, get even." This ongoing conflict soured our vacation in D.C.
