Day 10 Feb 20th (Friday) We caught the shuttle at 3:30am for our early flight from Auckland to Cairns in the far northern part of Queensland. Welcome to Oz, the heat and humidity hit us as soon as we stood outside the terminal waiting for the hotel shuffle. We checked into the Hotel Cairns, an old established typical Queensland tropical hotel. We had a great room and were right downtown within walking distance to everything that we needed. We then had to check out the area so we went for a wa...

Cairns, Australia mboyzThursday the 29 of March. Another great day down under...clr skies 27 degrees and it is only 7 AM. The remainder of the day was down at the lagoon for some R and R. You can get into this real easy, especially with such great weather. WE had the pleasure of sharing the next cuople of days with Alana from Brisbane. She had actually skipped town to make this outing? While taking in the atmosphere at the lagoon you realize how intense the sun is and the UV index is at the extreme point. As the li...
Cairns, Australia mboyzFriday the 30 of March....yet another beautiful day to set out to one of the 7th wonders of the world......The Barrier Reef. Us and a boat load of Oriental tourists. By the end of the day we all had had enough of some of their attitudes, including the staff on board. We had booked our tour through Suncover Reef Cruises. Very professional group, well organized events for everyone to take in the sights and beauty of the ride out and back(took about 90 mins) and of course the actual REEF. WOWWWW...

... and yup you got it eating. However before we could do any of this we had a safety briefing, but there was no mention of not fighting with or standing on the coral, which we found a bit strange. But before we even got out to the Reef we had to deal with the motion sickness and watching fellow passengers feeding the fish, going green and turning the boat into a hospital. However after 2 hours of rough riding, we arrived at the beautiful ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia hess... bite you' she says 'as you'll get sick', 'how sick i ask' 'oh i got bitten and was in hospital for 3 weeks'. that's not 'getting sick' THAT'S A SERIOUS ILLNESS!! this place is wrong! these animals are put here to kill you! so then we get back to what i thought was relative safety (ie some tarmac) and we head to the toilets. 'watch out for the toads and frogs that live in the toilet bowls' the others helpfully point out. 'oh ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia chickpealarry... sea life is unbelievable and I saw 2 sharks, a manta ray and a whole bunch of sea turtles. Plus those free standing sea clams are fascinating! After lunch the second stop was deeper water and an amazing array of fish. Finnin's - I think that I saw every one of those fish in the puzzle we put together over Christmas. We took a bunch of underwater photos, so hoping they ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia rebshark... whole concept is that when the opportunity next arises to do something from the book I have to do it). So I asked if I could get booked on for tmrw, quick phone call and a swipe of the card later and I'm booked to throw myself out a plane from a great height. When back to room and Coma kid had moved from bottom bunk A to the one below me (odd boy) and was twitching his hand a bit now and then while he slept. Great I've got the guy from "my left foot ...
