Queensland

Day 10 Feb 20th (Friday) We caught the shuttle at 3:30am for our early flight from Auckland to Cairns in the far northern part of Queensland. Welcome to Oz, the heat and humidity hit us as soon as we stood outside the terminal waiting for the hotel shuffle. We checked into the Hotel Cairns, an old established typical Queensland tropical hotel. We had a great room and were right downtown within walking distance to everything that we needed. We then had to check out the area so we went for a wa...

Dantree River and Crocs!!!!

Went on a trip today......the Dantree River. It was a really good day and went to loads of places. Saw some Crocodiles in the river or should I say on the river banks. Had some strange ice-cream!!! and had my first Barbie. It was a fabulous day and met some nice people on the trip. Tomorrow Tuesday I am off on my cruise...please keep fingers crossed and any thing else so that the sea is calm and the sun shines!! I'm not as bothered about the sun but as long as we don't have any rough seas! Th...

The REEF

Thursday the 29 of March. Another great day down under...clr skies 27 degrees and it is only 7 AM. The remainder of the day was down at the lagoon for some R and R. You can get into this real easy, especially with such great weather. WE had the pleasure of sharing the next cuople of days with Alana from Brisbane. She had actually skipped town to make this outing? While taking in the atmosphere at the lagoon you realize how intense the sun is and the UV index is at the extreme point. As the li...

The Great Barrier Reef

Friday the 30 of March....yet another beautiful day to set out to one of the 7th wonders of the world......The Barrier Reef. Us and a boat load of Oriental tourists. By the end of the day we all had had enough of some of their attitudes, including the staff on board. We had booked our tour through Suncover Reef Cruises. Very professional group, well organized events for everyone to take in the sights and beauty of the ride out and back(took about 90 mins) and of course the actual REEF. WOWWWW...

Cairns

... clean - no litter anywhere, and barely any traffic. It seems a great safe place for all ages and walks of life and is a super place to be a backpacker! Definitely my favourite city I've been to and we'll miss it when we leave (never thought I'd say that about a city). We leave tomorrow after we collect our Spaceship (it's the campervan company) and do a spot of shopping. For the next 46 days we will be living in a Toyota Estima. It's quite ...

a very very hot & humid Cairns

... it air conditioning. Apparently yesterday was the hottest day on record for the last 7years. We manage to pick up a cheap Australia phone and then leave the nice cool shopping centre to look for a campervan rental shop. We don't manage to come across any and the heat mixed in with how tired we are is just too much and we just end up going back to the hotel to use the internet. Now armed with the addresses for campervan rental shops we head off to try and rent a ...

Not in Portsmouth but still near death

... and we were due to take the final exam mid-September. unfortunately we both had colds that weekend, which is especially annoying as we are not prone to being ill (I've had one cold in the last five years and I wasn't best pleased about the one I did have). Well, we rescheduled for a couple of weeks later and I well remember that our final qualification dive was on 3rd October, our wedding anniversary. How we loved giant-striding into the cloudy and ...
