Breath taking location

We left Christchurch this morning after picking up our rental car. Fortunately it was just big enough to hold our luggage - boy a golf traveling case can take up a lot of room. We took a combination of the fast and scenic routes to Mt. Cook, the tallest peak in NZ and where Sir Edmond Hillary trained for his ascent of Mt. Everest. The drive through …

Snow Storm, Sprained Ankle, & Christchurch

A travel blog entry by kelleyandalan

We woke up and Mt Cook had disappeared behind the clouds. It was rainy, windy, and it looked like a good reason to retreat to The Hermitage to watch some more films before driving to Lake Tekapo to camp for the night. Maybe the rain would stop in the evening after the front blew through. So, we grabbed a coffee at The Hermitage's cafe looking out …

Hooker Lake Hike & Honeymoon Dinner

A travel blog entry by kelleyandalan

After a slow morning and a few more showers to washing off any remaining Kepler grime, we headed to the Hooker Lake trail head. This trail would take us to the base of Mt Cook's glacial lake. The skies held out for us with blue skies framed about the mountain and clouds seemingly being pushed out by Mt Cooks might. But, it was extremely windy …

Hike Out of Alpine Paradise & Mt Cook Approach

A travel blog entry by kelleyandalan

Hiking out of the Kepler Track made us a bit sad. We stared at our high perched view of the Fiordlands for as long as we could in hopes that it would burn into our memories. The morning brought clouds sitting below us in the valleys and Te Anua Lake - just as you see in so many of the Luxmore Hut photographs. Since we had a all down hill hike to …

This is THE place to stay if in the area. We had a standard room with mount cook view (don't even think about getting a room without aMount Cook view) and ask for one on the higher floor. choice of restaurants - panorama excellent -quality rather than quantity but you do have to reserve ahead. not the cheapest place we stayed in NZ but certainly not to be missed.

    Accommodation near Mount Cook

A large, modern, functional hotel which is almost the only choice available to travellers wanting to stay in Mount Cook Village. Our room was Premium Plus on the top floor with a large window facing Mount Cook. Fantastic views of the mountain, when it was clear, but unfortunately it wasn't for most of our stay. The room was clean and comfortable but almost zero wardrobe space which was a pity. The cafe/bar was lovely and a real pity it closed at 6pm as a good choice of light meals. The Panorama a la carte restaurant was excellent but the Alpine restaurant was disappointing with an over-priced and very average buffet.

We stayed at the Hermitage hotel 'chalet' for 2 nights. The chalet are only about 5 mins walk from the main hotel, which houses the Activities desk, 3 restaurants and other amenities. Our room had 2 double beds, fully equipped kitchen and unsurpassed view of the Aoraki mountain range from our huge glass windows. Though I do not remember telling the hotel that we are on our honeymoon, our room was automatically upgraded to include breakfast, and a warm note welcomed us!

The chalets are perfect for honeymooners, as they are away from the general crowd (though Mt cook village has a population of only about 300 in summers, 100 in winters). The pricing for the hotel is a little steep , however, I would love to come back here!

This is a well run and appointed operation. But as it is the village it charges are very steep for what is offered. the dining options are limited from the cheap and nasty but pricey pizzas in the backpakers to the exclusive reastaurant at the other end.
