... have improved dramatically. Much of the way has been along paved paths, built we learnt with the flag stones from demolished cotton mills. Today's path was wide and sandy, joining the old dismantled Rosedale railway all the way to Blakey Ridge. There were loads of people on it. A community marathon had sweaty tattooed creatures passing us regularly, then there were the cyclists, other trekkers, weekend walkers and even a couple of trail bikes competing for the ...

... and hedge rowing, rabbits, and other wildlife. The track bypassed a sewage works, quarry, major roadworks on the A1, before leading us into the uninteresting town Catterick Bridge. So far Wainwright appeared to be on the money! The route into the town was along a footpath of a major road. As if the rain wasn't enough, the spray we copped from the tyres of 40 mph trucks driving through the water channels on the verges ...

... looking the town. When you think that people lived in the 1100's in single storey wooden huts with grass roofs, and even well off people lived in two storey wooden huts, the impact of the Normans arriving and building these huge stone structures must have been truly awe inspiring. Great fish and chip dinner at the pub along from the b&b, and some good local beer, Timothy ...
