We relented and visited Carlisle Castle on our way here to Windermere. It was another castle after all but with a slight difference in that it was beseiged by northern neighbours frequently. It was also a good place for morning tea before we headed out towards the western coast. We followed an AA car tour and thoroughly enjoyed Skinburness and the view to Dumfries and Galloway over very calm waters. We meandered down the coast calling in ...

... at 10.01. The car park was now buzzing. Using our National Trust passes we entered these beautiful gardens. The cost of entry is free to NT members but would have cost £11.55 each. ... this walk was breathtaking. We managed not to get lost, even though some directions were a bit vague. The first part of the walk brought us to a coffee shop over the river, and even though it was not too long since breakfast, we couldn't resist the opportunity to stop and enjoy the ambience. The whole walk took nearly three and a half hours, and it was wonderful. After a cool drink we ...

Today is another Bank Holiday, or as we call them back in Australia, a Public Holiday so there were lots of people out and about. We started our explorations today by visiting the village of Middleham which is best known for Middleham Castle. The castle is now a ruin and is managed by English Heritage and the reason we were so keen on visiting here is that it was the boyhood home of King Richard III, where he completed his squire training ...
