... so we paid the 80zar entrance fee and in we went. We only lasted about an hour and we decided to sack it. Conscious of our early start the next day, we headed back to the hotel to bed. First new year in many that I have been in bed before midnight ! As it was, everyone else was still out partying so we lay awake listening to the festivites going on around us. Didn't sleep great for the rest of the night and woke feeling tired! ...
... and we sat in splendid isolation on a gorgeous windswept beach watching plovers chase the surf and whales jumping in the distance and then moved to a crescent bay on the lagoon for a picnic - there were only 2 other people on the beach. It was fabulous.
A bit of wildlife spotting later and we were racing the clock to get to the park gates before we got locked in at ...
... Moving on to the next hide we had weavers and ducks and geese and grebes and harriers......phew! In amongst all this we also saw more tortoises, steenbok, duikers, ostriches, 2 enormous puff adders and a herd of eland and a mongoose. Exhausting!
We had dinner at Pearly's on the beach and watched the sunset with ridiculously cheap cocktails and exceptionally good grub.
What a fantastic day......and we get to do it all over again ...
... the next test series.........
We had a lovely drive up the coast and arrived at our hotel in Langebaan to find a spa voucher and a bottle of champagne waiting for me! All courtesy of Steph and Hayley - a lot of conspiring has occurred I suspect! Cheers ladies!!
We had a lovely meal at the hotel and drank the fizz of course! A stroll to the beach in the darkness revealed nothing but lights in the distance. We would have to wait another day to see how lovely it ...
... we watched the other groups arriving and leaving with their hauls - this really was a popular spot.
All the three or so hours Rian finally emerged and his final tally was 35 crayfish. Pretty damn impressive for a mornings work! We took them back to his father-in-laws place and shared a beer and took some photos of the catch (still trying to find them) while the kids played with the 4 Jack Russel puppies.
