Shanghai

Sorry for not writing a bit sooner but Shanghai has been hectic. Rather like the city itself we haven't stopped. I'm writing this whilst sat at the airport waiting to go to Hong Kong Shanghai is like being in something off the telly. When you look out of the window it doesn't appear real. The main picturesque part, Pudong Island has only been built in the last 15 years and has some amazing buildings. It is even more spectacular at night as each sky scraper is lit up with its own colourful lig...

Hong Kong

After Bangkok, we travelled to Hong Kong, We booked into the Excelsior hotel with a harbour view where we could experience the sunset from our room. Hong Kong is a very lively and busy place, but a true experience. We travelled on the star ferry a must for anyone visiting Hong Kong. We also went to the peak on the tram, The weather was very humid and we didnt get a good view from the top of the peak which was a shame. We visited Stanley market where we purchased lots of typical chinese goods ...

Asia Part II

Monday July 10, 2006 I arrived into Lantau, Hong Kong at 6am this morning and headed straight to the office. This week will be busy in preparation for the next month+ of travel to come.. Friday July 14, 2006 Departed Hong Kong this morning for my next stop - Bangkok. When I arrived at the airport, I decided to take a slight detour and bought a ticket quickly departing Bangkok for Phuket, Thailand! I learned about Phuket from a wonderful "world traveller" colleague 4 years ago - Russ Guidry - ...

Chinese New Year

Hong Kong is just as bizarre as I thought it would be. Bigger crowds than I have been in ever. Just crossing the street was pretty funny. Went to the big New Year's Flower Market in Victoria Park, which was right next to our hotel. Massive amounts of good-luck-flowers for the new year, plus loads of booths in the market, selling lots of strange junk, with guys standing on  someone's shoulders screaming at the crowd like it was the last episode of American Idol. Did the usual tourist ****, i.e...

Lively Hong Kong, Dull Macau

I was last in Hong Kong twelve years ago when i came here whilst living in Japan for Christmas and new year. I had enjoyed a fantastic holiday in what was then a lively and bustling city and, having read about the changes that had taken place here following the Hand-over (most of them negative), i was slightly surprised to find it had lost none of its entertainment value. As i had done in 1994, i stayed with a Manchester University friend Dave Nimmo although in the intervening period, Dave ha...

Namaste, Nepal.

We bid a fond farewell to Nepal on their New Year's day, April 14, 2006. Even though it was New Year day, there wasn't much celebration going on because of the threat of more pro-democracy protests. Santaman, our trekking guide, stopped by to say goodbye before heading out to a protest. The friendly hotel staff at the Tibet Guest House was also on hand to wish us farewell. The hotel and Santaman wrapped katas around our necks. It's a white scarf that the Nepalis give to friends upon their dep...

Living the Lush Life

Hong Kong, I might have travelled a small part of the word, but adaptable resourceful bloke I am (aye I'm talking about me) I still like the ability to talk to someone in English and actually get a reply instead of a blank vacant look which results in me having to use my limited knowledge of the local language to order a beer : ) As always first things first. Beer Hong Kong unfortunetely doesn't have any of its own beers but generally has Chinese beers, European and Japanese beers. So as a re...

Don't remember much...

It was in July 27 (till August 2) of 1985, 'twas my first time to leave Manila. Destination: Hong Kong. My parents had to leave my new born sister back home, :( My mom & dad took me there... it was a business trip for dad. For the life of me, I can only recall certain portions of my week-long trip. We stayed at the luxurious Excelsior Hotel in Cause Way Bay (Tong Lo Wan). One of those days, I was taken to Ocean Park - by either both my parents or along with a couple of relatives who resid...

Hong Kong Garden

Hong Kong Garden After 10 months in China I'm not sure that I can adequately describe how satisfying it was to return to Canada and be able to; read a menu; order food which, when it arrived was EXACTLY what you were expecting and walk down the street without being stared at like you have three heads. The pleasure I derived from holding a normally paced conversation which DIDN'T involve me answering the questions 'Do you like basketball?', 'Do you like Chinese food?' and 'Can you speak Chines...

Historical Traveler Reviews of The Excelsior Hong Kong

Yes very good

from Lisdar
all as previously stated but booked a high floor harbour room when we got there they persuade me to upgrade which I did but very costly should have seen other rooms first

but room and service excellent,

bit far out from main attractions these days but taxi's very cheap

good meal and drinks in bottom bar

meal on jumbo disappointing as when we went in directed us to the high class meal area should have gone upstairs as it was busier and more atmosphere

ocean park good day out, stayed there all day

Breakfast to die for

from Celiaann
This hotel is excellently located, a few mins walk from the subway, but if you take the airport express to central you can get to the hotel for free on the express bus. The hotel is excellent in every way, great rooms, quiet airconditioning and a breakfast to die for in a room overlooking the waterfront.

There are shopping centres and restaurants galore on your doorstep

A superb Hotel

from NeilMacUK
Stayed at the hotel for 7 nights in a suite, superb view of the harbour, especially at night. The service was excellent could not fault them in any way at all. Enjoyed it so much I am returning to the hotel for another 7 nights this July (2005)

I would recommend booking directly through the hotels own website as their prices were slightly lower than Expedia's and you can then specify alsorts of things about your stay there.

Pleasantly surprised

from Chanchan
I had some major reservations (no pun intended) when I had read all the reviews of this hotel, especially since we had booked ourselves a 7-night stay. We did not regret heeding previous recommendations to upgrade our room from standard to the harbour view, and we were happy with the size of the room. I can understand how people think the rooms look a little tired, but it's really not a big deal. Perhaps it was better to have lower expectations, because each of my misgivings disappeared as the week went on. Anyway, we really enjoyed our stay and would have no hesitation in staying at this same hotel again.

The service was the defining factor - we found the staff to be very responsive, e.g. they initially brought us the Chinese newspaper in the mornings (based on our last name), so I promptly requested 2 english newspapers. From then on, each and every morning all 3 newspapers were delivered to our door. The morning buffet was quite the smorgasbord and should appeal to those with diverse palates, although the quality could have been better for the price and is better value if you like a large breakfast. The concierge is pretty good too; they booked a decent hairdresser for me in the adjacent World Trade Center.

We enjoyed the hotel's proximity to the well groomed Victoria Park, perfect for a stroll at any time of the day (except Sundays). The hotel is also very well situated for taking a tram or the MTR (subway). I agree that it is a bit of a hike to the ferry, but then the taxi fare to the ferry terminal from the hotel is very reasonable. The most overpriced thing was taking the Excelsior limo to the airport - I'd skip that, but overall, this hotel gets our two thumbs up!

Top Hotel

Top hotel. Stayed here 4 nights in Feb 05. Great service, luxurious, clean with good rooms and resteraunts. Handy location on HK island but a good 45mins walk to Star Ferry/Peak tram, but very interesting if you take the back streets and sample the unique chinese atmosphere. Overlooks the harbour & promotes it's front/harbour view rooms as the best. However, we got a side view harbour view room and the view were ever better than the more expensive front view rooms. Side view was of the HK Island skyline, a spectacular skyscaper panoramic (Especially at night). Room was excellent and bed was biggest we'd ever seen. Resteraunts were fine but not great. One minus for the holiday was that it was end of Feb and it was freezing outside, yet the hotel insisted on keeping the aircon on. everyone was sitting around the lobby, bars and resteraunts in jackets. All in all, highly recommended.

Good location, disappointed with service

from A TripAdvisor Member
I enjoyed the cleanliness, location, and food. I booked my room five months in advance. I booked an executive floor room with a harbor view. I requested for a non smoking room. I reconfirmed my reservation before my departure. They replied to me that everything is in order. Just to my suprise when I checked in they said they do not have any non smoking rooms. I was disappointed. The clerk told me that he had the room vented and cleaned so it would not smell smokey. And it was approved by his manager. I thought it would be ok (thinking that the room would be clean). It was clean and smelled descent. But a couple days later we noticed that we can smell smoke coming from an adjacent door in my room that connected to a room next to us. I again complained. I told them that the smoke from the room next to us is unbearable to me. I repeatedly told them that I requested a nonsmoking room in advance. All they could say is that they were fully booked. The options were to either move to a lower floor which is not an executive floor but I would be charged the executive price or move to the floor above which has some noise cause of the band that is playing in the above floor. The clerk then suggested she can have the housekeeper spray some freshner.

I would have enjoyed Excelsior. Unfortuantely I was just disappointed with their service and action given. It was not good enough that I have chosen the executive floor and booked in advance. I expected more quality serivce with the higher end service of the executive floor.

Very good choice in Hong Kong

from nissemand
I stayed in a harbour view room at this hotel in November 2004. The views are stunning and the service is excellent. It is well worth ordering the breakfast in the room. The rooms are slightly dated, but very clean and equipped with everything you could wish for. The staff is courteous as the case is in most of Asia - a wonderful contrast to Europe. The sports pub in the basement is excellent with a huge range of beers and they do a great curry buffet for lunch. I recommend this place highly!

A truly great place to stay

from workingtitle
My partner and myself have just returned from an 8 day stay at the Excelsior and can say without any shadow of doubt that this hotel is simply superb. We had a room on the 20th floor with full harbour view, which was magnificent. The views are just marvellous. The hotel is very well appointed and with a good choice of restaurants. Staff are friendly and courteous and go out of their way to be helpful. Anyone choosing this hotel will certainly be making a good choice.

Exceslsior Hotel

I stayed at the hotel in late September. The rooms are a little dated compared to other hotels in Hong Kong, it is well worth paying the extra for a full harbour view I stayed in a Suite during my stay and the view was fantastic.

If you can get breakfast included in the price then it is well worth it as it sets you up for the day.

The service from all areas is fantastic and I would recommend this hotel for future visits.

Great service and location

from anna_j_k
We stayed in a harbour view suite here for 7 nights during our honeymoon. Throughout this time, the service from reception through to the maids was impeccable -- what you expect from Asian countries and a happy contrast to European standards! A great location, very central located on the island in a good shopping area with excellent transport links. Highly recommended.
