We were not disappointed with our Top 10 campsite at Hot Water Beach. I’d say it is the best one we have stayed on so far. It has a lovely little playground, a skate ramp and a big jumping pillow to keep the kids happy. The main facilities block has a lovely big kitchen and dining area, a smaller quiet room and a laundry room. The showers and toilets were warm and clean, and there was a great family bathroom with unlimited hot water, which did us fine! ...
... We had brought a spade, but many people had rented one locally. Yes, some people earn money renting spades to tourists.
Through considerable efforts we managed to dig a nice bathtub, and Leontien positioned herself in it, and intensely enjoyed the warm water, until a last goodbye-wave washed the bathtub to bits and gave Leontien a cold wash. ... and in a single axle bus it made for an interesting ride.
Just before we got to Hahei we called at Hot Water Beach, named because of the hot springs that run just under the sand. At low tide you can dig holes and get 60 degree water, but we arrived at high tide so just enjoyed the beach and hot weather - it was mid twenties today and the sun down here is pretty intense. Lots of sun cream!

Today was all about beaches. We had always wanted to stay at hot water beach but yesterday I had finally managed to acquire a book on New Zealand so could look into the area more thoroughly. We git to the campsite by lunchtime and booked in, the hot water beach was a 10 min walk away. We asked what time to go down to the beach and the lady at reception said low tide was at 6.30 so from 4.30 onwards. ...
