We relented and visited Carlisle Castle on our way here to Windermere. It was another castle after all but with a slight difference in that it was beseiged by northern neighbours frequently. It was also a good place for morning tea before we headed out towards the western coast. We followed an AA car tour and thoroughly enjoyed Skinburness and the view to Dumfries and Galloway over very calm waters. We meandered down the coast calling in ...

... by this time I am over the rocks and the steepness of the descent only to climb, clamber and rock climb the path - again the views are magnificent. Thank goodness for the 'friends of the track' who in certain parts had laid stones to assist with up and the down - we had finally crossed the Haystacks. We had our photo taken at the start of the walk and then headed up the track. The scenery is amazing, standing in the cliff tops looking out across the ocean and looking back to St.Bees. We take our time and amble along the cliff tops checking the bird rookeries, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Isle of Man, which we ...

... this walk was breathtaking. We managed not to get lost, even though some directions were a bit vague. The first part of the walk brought us to a coffee shop over the river, and even though it was not too long since breakfast, we couldn't resist the opportunity to stop and enjoy the ambience. The whole walk took nearly three and a half hours, and it was wonderful. After a cool drink we ...

    The Lake District

A travel blog entry by theriggs on Jun 03, 2015

We got an early start (for us) and headed towards the Lake District. With only 45 minutes to get here, we had plenty of time to explore the area before heading to our accommodation at the Westbourne B&B at Windermere (a recommended accommodation by the Morecombe Tourist Information Centre). Arriving at Windermere we headed straight to the Tourist Information Centre, where we were given some information about walks in the area and gardens we could visit. We ...
