Russell may be a tourist trap but you can see why. We went mad with photos.

Our reason for staying in Mangonui was that it gave us easier access to Cape Reinga. However we seriously underestimated the the time that it takes to travel NZ roads. Consequently we had to adjust our itinerary and take Cape Reinga off the agenda. We are sorry to have missed it but it couldnt be helped as we had a reservation in Russell.

Up early and packed and on the road to Thames, Auckland, Whagarei and destination Paihia. Using the outdoor free WiFi of the local library (photos) while Tess gathers for a plate on the deck of our Anchorage hotel room. Much more inviting than the trendy Puka Park with good kitchen and lots of windows to the view. The drive to and through Auckland …

We began this beautiful sunny (yet brisk) morning with an incredible breakfast prepared by our sweet host, Inge! Following this wonderful treat we ventured over to the Waitangi Treaty grounds where the origins of what we now call New Zealand took place on 1840. Beyond learning of the history of this relatively new country, I was introduce to the …

          ... to be spoken of.

On our last day there I decided to go by myself to see Tane Mahuta, an enormous Kauri tree in the forest. It was pretty damn impressive (51m tall, which I think means Usain Bolt can run straight to the top of it in under 5 seconds) but alas, I have no photos to show you, so if you really care that much, do a Google image search of Tane Mahuta. The few minutes seeing the tree were great, but I'm not sure if the whole thing warranted an eight ...

... I told her to slowly lower herself down and swim on top very carefully and not to look down. Did she listen? No! She looked down and panicked so much she lost the ability to think rationally. Unable to control her arms she looked like a drowned mole rat but she was in fact having an anxiety attack. I couldn't help but laugh so I swam over and took her hands to bring her out to where it was deeper. Being as dramatic as me she demanded that she wanted a boat to come ...
