Russell may be a tourist trap but you can see why. We went mad with photos.

          Sailing around the Islands

This morning, after breakfast at the hotel, we met the R. Tucker Thomas tall ship at the Russell wharf for a day long sail around the Bay of Islands. The weather was beautiful, 70 degrees in the morning to 76 degrees by mid-day. We saw dozens of dolphins jumping out of the water, we saw five penguins, and had a great day for sailing.

We stopped by Tahunanui Beach in Nelson in the morning before returning the rental car at the Nelson Airport. The car was returned scratch free after focusing on staying in the left lane for 3 days!

Our flight took us from Nelson on to the Bay of Islands in the northern region of the North Island of New Zealand. We flew into Kerikeri, took …

Our reason for staying in Mangonui was that it gave us easier access to Cape Reinga. However we seriously underestimated the the time that it takes to travel NZ roads. Consequently we had to adjust our itinerary and take Cape Reinga off the agenda. We are sorry to have missed it but it couldnt be helped as we had a reservation in Russell.

Up early and packed and on the road to Thames, Auckland, Whagarei and destination Paihia. Using the outdoor free WiFi of the local library (photos) while Tess gathers for a plate on the deck of our Anchorage hotel room. Much more inviting than the trendy Puka Park with good kitchen and lots of windows to the view. The drive to and through Auckland …

We began this beautiful sunny (yet brisk) morning with an incredible breakfast prepared by our sweet host, Inge! Following this wonderful treat we ventured over to the Waitangi Treaty grounds where the origins of what we now call New Zealand took place on 1840. Beyond learning of the history of this relatively new country, I was introduce to the …
