... see Mt. Etna towering above us in the cloud and it was a beautiful sight with snow dotting the summit. To get to the actual Etna crater involves a further three and a half hours of travel by chairlift, four wheel drive and hike. Not possible for us! We think our guide said the last eruption was 2001, but don't quote us on that! About two thirds of our way up the trees suddenly disappeared and the landscape was full of lava and ash with ...

Nicolosi to Taormina fine and Warmish

A travel blog entry by kenb on Nov 22, 2014

Tricky drive down the hill to highway, not well signposted and took a couple wrong turns but got there in the end. Can't say I enjoy driving in Sicily. Roads are very narrow, rarely straight, and the other drivers are maniacs. The drive into Taormina from highway was just as stressful, with the road doubling back on itself and winding in no fixed direction, but somehow we managed to find the car park we were looking for. Can't take ...

      Mt Etna

... a samosa with batter made from pizza flour with sparkling mineral water and beer, and filled with sliced apple and speck. Fantastic flavours. Accompanied by a local red wine with heaps fruit and cinnamon after taste. Didn't need main course but had already ordered a thin crust 4 stagoni pizza (tomato, mozzarella, spinach, mushroom and artichoke). All pizzas in this town are 36cm on a 33 cm plate- huge. I could only eat one third, and Kim managed much less than that. One to challenge ...

... atmosphere. Not too much brand name stuff, and not particularly cheap, but Kim managed to load up on handbags. Couldn't find anything interesting for the kids- adult or junior. Set off again around 1530 for easy drive to Nicolosi which is on edge of mt Etna. Road in was bedlam but town seemed nice enough. Typical small Sicilian town. Hotel not too hard to find with the help of Google. Older property with bright blue walls and red ...

      Taormina, the toast of Sicily

Taormina was everything and more than we expected. This small community about an hour north of Catania on the east coast of Sicily has great views of snow-capped Mount Etna. Our accomodations at the Villa Ducale Hotel were first class. The town was fun to stroll in. The public gardens were beautiful. The ...
