... was fine (for a change) and the ascent up across Glencoyne Beck was much easier than the route attempted last time (from Glenridding). With my new iphone app I was able to take a couple of GPS readings/waypoints along the route as a fallback for dealing with the return journey in case we got lost. The AW book states that Sheffield Pike should not be ascended in mist so I wanted to prepare for any change in the weather :).

... across the fells and at one point ended up face first in a large mound of bracken... fortunately just missing the muddy swamp beside it! We trundled on but lasted about 10 minutes after that before turning back and descending; defeated, wet and cold!
